New toy/project
« on: November 13, 2021, 01:30:09 PM »
Went for a 14hr round trip on Thursday to pick up a new “project”. It was an “OK” deal, so I decided to jump on it and have tinker on over the weekend.

The truck was not happy with me and averaged an abysmal 11.3mpg over the 600+ mile trip, lol.

It’s a 2016 Can Am Outlander XMR 1000. It needs a fair amount of work, but nothing crazy.

So far I know it’s gonna need the following
New winch cable
Right rear axle
Right front brake caliper
Right front shock
Headlight wiring/connections
Normal key (he only found the “low power” key)
New fluids
Front diff seals
Wheel bearings
Brake pads
Floor boards due to tires being too big and hitting/breaking them

It’s possibly going to need a rear diff, but may just need seals. May also need some bushings or prop shaft joints, but don’t really know until it’s apart.

Cosmetically, it’s going to need a good clean up and I plan on modifying the bumpers before getting them powder coated. Some plastic will need a little love and zip ties too, lol.

Some parts are on order to kick off the work hopefully next weekend.

nice project! And yes, those tires do look a bit too large. Holy crap, how do you turn it with them on it?

They do rub a little at full lock, so gotta be careful, lol. I’m going to resolve it by getting some thinner steel floor boards that they will clear.

Ordered up a bunch of seals, fluids and bearings to get it back up to snuff.

I go tomorrow to grab some random parts from a guy that’s parting one out. It would be great to have it together for a ride over Xmas and then sort out some of the less important stuff after.

That’s a lot of machine right there.  Big power.  Definitely needs some love but I’m sure you’ll get it sorted.  Cool machine for sure!

I only had a few hours last night, but almost got to the diff and rear prop shaft removal.

Diff is roasted, so I’ll have to pull the trigger on a replacement. He completely wore through the rear brake pads and wrecked the caliper. I hope get some pieces off one being parted out to save some .

I was able to pick up some used brake parts, but that was about it from someone parting one out. They were pretty well picked over already.

Ordered up a new rear diff from Mud ‘N wheels. That one wasn’t cheap, lol.

All the parts needed are on order or in transit. Some may take a few weeks to get here, but I should be able to make me Xmas deadline.

You don’t mess around!  I hope everything comes in time.

I’m just catching up a bit on this now and really looking at pictures.  Those tires are majorly stuffed in there.  Haha. What is going on with that CV boot on that axle?  Looks like the cv joint broke and twisted the boot up.

Do they still only have one brake lever?  That’s always been a killer for me.  It’s one of the reasons I like Japanese bikes.  Ever since I had to walk one up a mountain after someone rolled it off the side and I couldn’t work the throttle and brake at the same time from standing beside it.

I wish I had the power those things out down though.  It’s gonna be fun!

He snapped the CV and broke the rear diff on the same ride, lol. I'm sure the 32" tires didn't help  :uugly: From what I can tell, the pinion bearing started to fail and then it took out the gearset. The Axle looks like a cheap Lake Country one, they don't take much to snap. The rear on the other side looks like a Rhino Axle and both fronts look like Rhino axles too.

Only one brake lever like Polaris, really not a huge fan of that and like you, I prefer to be able to control the front or rear brake independently, but it is, what it is.

I ordered a new OEM replacement shock for the front and that was pricey, but less than doing a set of aftermarket ones. I just want to get it cleaned up a little bit and get all the mechanical crap done, then get it our for a little ride. Then, the rest of the cosmetic stuff can be done as time and budget allows.

I hope you and the Wife are enjoying the trip!

Having a great time!  Thanks!

My SxS has one rhino 2.0 axle on it.  They’re pricey.  Replace as you go.  I didn’t snap mine.  I just heard the tell tale clicking they it was on its way out.  Better to get ahead of the break than be left stuck in the woods.  It was a rear too.

The Rhino was my choice as well, but it might take a while to come in. Fingers crossed.

First major part arrived! Mud ‘N Wheels “Torque Series” rear diff. Upgraded components over stock. From what I’ve been told, I’ll never have to worry about it again.

Wild Boar floor boards showed up, along with the new u-joints for the rear prop shaft. The floor boards were scuffed up in transit, so I’m gonna try and get a credit to take them to be powered.

Is that a soccer ball?

And those are serious foot boards!

Yes, apparently it’s a “mod” to help the front float in deep water, lol.

I found something that worked on the textured plastic to get the mud/clay out…a magic eraser. Didn’t take that much effort either.
