New shoes for the truck.
« on: August 15, 2021, 10:34:02 PM »
I know I owe comments to other threads right now but wanted to let you all know I can still clean and detail a rig.  Had to put new shoes on the truck,  went back to BFG ATKO 2's.   Had a little trouble getting them balanced, and the do ride stiffer than the Michelin's but over all, glad to be back in a capable tire.   They did end up road force balance them but I am no 100% they did the correctly.  At 80 mph, there is a shimmy....we'll give it another 1000 miles and maybe recheck em.    This week is a hell week.   Well the rest of this month is a hell week.  All over the place and all work.

Those are a good solid tire, nice choice. I'm still debating if I go back to the Ridge Grapplers on the next se or not.

So guys,

I need shocks gents, this ATKO's are rougher from a compound and sideway perspective.

I am thinking Bilsteen shocks but looking at the Fox ones too...kind of budget conscience of course.

What would be your recommendations there.

My recommendation is to suck it up butter cup.  It’s not a damn Cadillac.  I remember I thought my Ram 4500 work truck rode rough.  Then I got my f450.  Now my work truck is a 2021 Chevy 4500 and I’ve never driven anything like it’s. Makes the F450 feel like a dream.

For what it’s worth, I have no input on shocks for you.  I just commented to talk shit.

I don’t know much about them but nitto and Mickey both have new tires.

Nitto has the recon grapplers and Mickey has the Baja boss.  Both brands have served me well in the past.  I like the look of both.

Just got home from around 1100 miles from DFW to AR back to DFW then to Austin TX and back

These tires are not balanced well.   I gotta go back for a THIRD TIME.

Is it just a nuisance vibration or something crazy and shaky?

It’s a little shimmy and some increased feedback.    Certain road surfaces are worse than others.     Wheel and seat, there is more pronounced vibration.     Wondering if it’s a matter of a harder compound of the ATKO’s.     Dunno.

The shimmy would be my only concern.  The increased feedback and any harshness is to be expected.  I’ve had tires that took a few hundred miles to break in and not grab every line on the road but it sounds like you have that mileage covered.

Gonna run back up to Discount Tire this week and maybe ask for Road Force Balancing and maybe index a tire or two.

Its not right.

Tire issue resolved.  Went back to Discount Tire yesterday for a 3rd time to rebalance.  Talked to the GM of this store who just so happned to be the GM in the Keller Store when I lived there and for the past 20 years, this GM has put tires on every single car/truck/jeep I have owned.

He said that the AT KO's are not what they used to be, they have lots of issues with them so for 300 more bucks, they took them off and put on Nitto Recon Grapplers.    I have to say, they are really nice.  These maybe my new FAV tire.

Have a look.   they roll well and they are balanced and the truck performs perfectly at 60-90 mph.

Next up is new shocks all the way around, however, I am super poor right now.  Gotta pay for a bike and a watch AND get out of debt....so shocks may be a winter project.
