Hit a skunk
« on: July 05, 2014, 07:34:12 AM »
Hey,  looking for any suggestions.  I

wacked a skunk with the Edge last night on the way into Ottawa. I obviously don't have anything with me, but wondered if there was something I could pick up and head to the coin wash. I was thinking maybe a strong APC cleaner to break up the skunk stink since its oil based.

No, I am not going to bath the underside of the car in tomato juice!

Bug and tar remover?  Lots of it.  Let it dwell?  I mean if it breaks down bug guts and asphalt then your think it would help.  Couple cans of tarminator before rolling through the automatic touch less wash with the undercarriage blasters.

Ferret Shampoo from a Pet store will work well.

I got to thinking about it.  I was going to recommend Natures Miracle from a pet store.  Its a type of cleaner that I know uses enzymes which are useful for breaking down really bad odors such as stubborn animal urine.  Well I did a quick search to see if anyone has used it for skunks and I found this...

http://www.natures-miracle.com/products/pet-odor-stain-removers/sprayed-by-a-skunk-odor-remover-how-to-remove-skunk-odor.aspx

Worth a shot if you can find it but I'm willing to bet it doesn't vary much from any of their other formulas.  I was recommended this from a vet once because of the enzymes in it.

Great suggestions boys,  thank you!

I will give the nature's Miracle a shot as there is a big box pet store near by.

Might want to try what my vet & hunters always told me to use ( if my 1 dogs get nailed )

Hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish soap .

This is the same mix that Myth busters did an episode on.

I keep this in a plastic tote in the basement all in one place, in case I need it.
- Also have 2 quarts of saline solution to flush their eyes

One quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
One quarter cup of baking soda
    one teaspoon of dish soap

I hit the underside with Castrol super clean, ran it through the touchless wash with undercarriage spray, then hit underneath again with the Natures Miracle and through the car wash again. Came ouy pretty good. Only a slight stink left. I'll get it up on the ramps once home and spray it better then hit the car wash again.

Steve, my dog was sprayed more times than I can count as a kid. That combo does work very, very well. Even just plain 'ol palmolive works well of they don't get it too bad.

Just got back from the drive. 5 hours last night and then another 11 today.

We hit a couple of substantial rain storms and after stopping in the downpour (Wife thought I was nuts), going at it with both products again underneath and then driving through the rain, I cannot smell it anymore.

So glad, I dealt with that stink on the farm way too much as a kid and really dislike it. Glad it appears to be gone at this point.
