2012 Mustang V6 - Black
« on: April 11, 2014, 06:42:44 PM »
Remember the old saying that says ?No good deed goes unpunished?? Today I got (another) taste of that one. A friend of mine asked if I could do his daughter?s car. After all, I?d just done his Saleen the other day and his daughter?s car was a 2012 Mustang V6 with only 18,000 miles on it. How bad could it possibly be?

Let?s see, the car is parked outside 24/7 in downstate New York. Then it?s driven to and from college every day. Oh, and it?s had a little paint work. And it?s black. I should have known, but I agreed to do it.

So here?s what the car looked like after a good wash. Not bad, right?

Even though the whole car wasn?t this bad, here?s a picture in the glare of the Halogen light that kind of shows what I was up against. Ugh!

I decided to hit it pretty hard to start with just so I could knock down the more serious marring. That meant 3 passes with Meguiar?s M101 on an Orange Lake Country CCS pad on the Flex. Although it took out the major marring, as you might guess, it introduced some minor marring of its own. So the next step was 3 passes with Meguiar?s M205 on a White LC CCS pad on the Flex. Much better, but not perfect. So the next step was 3 passes with Reflect Super Fine Polish on a White LC CCS pad on the Flex. Almost perfect. The final polish step was Reflect Super Fine on a Black LC CCS pad on the Porter-Cable. That got it about as good as it was going to get. I finished up with Menzerna Power Lock by hand. The wheel wells were done with Hyperdressing, as was the black, textured trim.

Other than the paint, the other big problem was the ugly steel wheels with Blizzak snow tires. No amount of polishing was going to turn these frogs into a prince. Fortunately, I was working on this in the shop and the factory alloy wheels & summer tires were upstairs. So after washing them with Poor Boys Spray & Rinse and a quick coat of Poor Boys Natural Look Dressing, we swapped the wheels and the car really came to life. Here?s the finished product:

And just to get a little cheap and shameless:

Did I tell you guys how much I hate black paint?

Another knockout job with pictures to boot.  Had I known a new camera would have sparked all of this we would have started a donation drive and got you one a while ago.

Tony, Tom,

Nothing short of awesome !!!

Thank you for posting the products used, if I get the task with the SILs new stang, this might come in handy.  It was dealer owned / driven ( think member of the family's wife or something ) and it has DISO from the dealer washings with the wash mitt from the Regan administration.

Great work, thanks again for the info !!

Who's Tony?   As in Attworth?  Or Tom?

None the less....Amazing turn around.   Those correction and reflectos are extraordinary to say the least.

Did I count 12 total passes?   In one day?    You are a beast.

Thanks guys. Yea, this one kicked my butt and you did count the number of passes correctly. The paint was somewhat soft (M101 marred it), but just wouldn't correct with anything less aggressive. I really thought I had it after the M205, but the halogen light showed some holograms - which led to the Reflect on the White pad. Then the halogen still showed some very faint holograms - which led to the Black pad. I've honestly never had one fight me this hard. I felt like JP on that black Lexus. Last night was definitely a four Advil evening.

Wow TS! I can't get over those friggen wheels! They look great.

Black paint sure is a bear, but sure is the most rewarding once done.

I think you may have found your retirement career!

The Mrs G6 is the same way, I think a light fingernail rub would mar it, but to get out anything serious it needs OPT HyperCompound and a OPT MF Cutting pad.

I don't know if paints are changing formulation that is causing this ??
- Could be they work better on the production line ??

All supposition and pontification on my part.
