Thanks! I've been lurking around here for awhile, but I figured I needed to join up. I really don't know anything about detailing and figure that now would be a good time to start learning!

wow, you are lucky to be near Gip...if you get stuck...well, you can do what many of us do...call him!

We love the newer detailer, that is why we built this site.  Well, that and to help you spend money...the good news, we'll get you on the right path and avoid the mistakes most of us made.

Thanks for visiting the Cafe, come back often.  There's always something new!

Well good, because im sure im going to need alot of help!

Im still stuck in college, so my plan is to slowly build up an arsenal of supplies so that I can have everything needed when the time comes.

Is there anywhere on here that has a good place to start as far as supplies go? I skimmed through the detailing handbook earlier, a TON of good info in there! I'm going to have to set aside some time to give it a thorough reading.

That handbook is need of a refresh, one of the authors has recently started to post again and he brought this up as a talking point.

so are you planning on just working on our own car or are you looking to start doing this for others for some $$.   Both ways get you to the same place, one has a little more risk due to funds the other can help you pay for your own gear, products etc.

so tell us what the plan is and what you are working on.   There are a handfull and I am only a handful of things you can do by hand.   Getting a DA is going to be a must.   But it can be done in stages.   We have a section on "where to get what you need" where we list our fav vendors and friends of the Cafe.

So lets start there.

What college by the way?

What college by the way?

The vehicle of choice is a 2004 F150 FX4, DSG. I got it last November, and I've kept it in good shape, but nothing near using a DA. It has swirls, but they are hard to see, probably because of the paint. There are a few deep scratches from the PO, and the front bumper/bumper pad is hopelessly gone from rock chips, but I have slowly learned to deal with it.

My goal is to become educated enough to bring my truck back to showroom quality, and I will primarily only be working with my truck to begin with. If at some point I become comfortable enough to take on customers, I may head down that road. However, I dont see that happening anytime soon in the future LOL. I also want to learn how to keep the trim looking fresh, due to how bad it is fading, but I have slowly started the tedious process of repainting some of the plastics.

As for the college, Texas A&M. Agricultural Economics, Class of '13. Planning on graduating next May and then heading off into the real world!

Obsessive - Thanks!!

Stick with us kid and you'll be getting requests from complete strangers to work on their cars. All it takes is time, patience and persistence. Of course throwing boat loads of money at products doesn't hurt either.  :redneck:
