Cleaning dashes, door panels etc.
« on: December 30, 2009, 08:50:46 PM »
I've been meaning to ask this for a while and just keep forgetting. What method or products do you guys use to clean your dash, consoles, door panels or just any interior vinyl or plastics?  Hot water with APC? This might sound odd but it seems like an aerosal glass cleaner might work as it would spray nice and not run as your trying to agitate it. Maybe not good for plastics and such??

Most cleaner dressings do a pretty good job of cleaning most things.  I usually use Poorboy's Natural Look or Obsessive Detail's Silk Shine.  If I need anything stronger then I'll use Meg's APC+ at 10:1.

Like ESF mentioned, many dressings will do the job but, if the grunge is a bit more than can be handled by the dressing, I'll normally go to a APC+ 10:1 mix.  I normally allow it to dwell after spraying for 10 - 20 seconds and then I'll agitate it with a very soft-bristled brush.

Once I feel that I have it clean, I'll normally follow with a quick spritz of DI water over the same panel and will wipe it down with a trash MF towel just so that I ensure that I've removed nearly all of the APC+ mix.

Final hit with a dressing like Natural Look or even a hit with Meg's QDI and we're good to go...

Is DI water distilled?

Is DI water distilled?

Yes.  Same difference...  Regular water can also work..... it's the OCD in me coming out with the DI/Distilled.  ;)

EDIT: BTW, I find that using DI/Distilled to mix my chemicals really makes a difference...  They go on better, suds better, and seemingly work better... just another OCD observation.

RP, that's a habit I would like to try to get in to more.  I have used it for ONR in the past.

I use distilled water to mix my chemicals with as well.  Also use it in my extractor.
For really dirty interior surfaces I use a bug scrubber sponge, with the thin mesh covering, and apc.

For just routine wipe downs, I use some Meg's QID wipes (still going through some I picked up). Otherwise, I would use APC 1:20 or 1:10.

I'll have to try DI with my chemicals that I mix in bottles. It would take a lot to was your car though!

You only need a few gallons for a ONR wash.  I can do my entire Expedition with 3 gallons.

Really? You get quite a few washes out of a 32oz bottle then. Do you use it in the summer as well?

Sometimes.  I like washing the traditional way with a hose w/foam gun and two buckets, Especially when it comes to wheels, wells and tires.  It's really nice though when a few days or even a week goes by where the vehicle still looks great and you don't feel the need to go all out and really just want to clean the light dust or dirt off the panels and windows but don't want to drag everything out.  ONR does work surprisingly well though.  It can take some pretty good grime on the vehicle but if you're not sure it doesn't hurt to blast it off at the self-serve or at home first to knock off whatever you can first.

I'm assuming that you use two 3 gallon buckets - wash water and rinse water with this

I prefer to use 2 buckets whenever possible.  Can't be too safe.
