1997 Toyota Tacoma paint?
« on: August 30, 2009, 10:25:44 PM »
Anybody know what they used on these for paint?  It has some rubs spots down to metal.  The hood and roof have are covered in spots that look like stars.  I am just trying to find out what I have gotten in to.  I will try and get some pictures.

Can you get some pictures, please?  If you're seeing metal, obviously there's not much that a polish is going to be able to accomplish.

As for the 'stars', I have no idea what you're describing.

Pics, please.

Okay, here is what I was able to get pictures.  The roof and hood look like this all over.

looks like time for respray...the little stars look as though the paint has dried up/died/killed from heat and sun (accelerated by being black as well) and shrunk..if you are in an area that freezes it will not be long until it really goes south...1997 it should be base coat clear coat...but who knows what was shot if it has seen the body shop..could the rub spots down to or close to metal you describe be the clear coming off...

That, sir -- is a new one to me.

Has this vehicle been repainted... if so, I'm going to go with clear cracking/crowsfeet...

But, then again, the spots look to be raised above the surface -- if it's a respray, the prep work could've been beyond poor.

If this vehicle was sitting in my shop, I'd be VERY concerned that if I hit it with a polish, that I'd burn through clear/color on top of each of those 'bumps'.

Any chance that this is some sort of Toy 'textured' paint?

I am wondering if it is left over damages from years of being outside and tree sap?  It does not appear to be a respray.   I ask about it, as I had toyota paint peel of at the car wash on the x's car many years ago and hers was a 97 also.

I think a paint job will be in the plans for next year.  Luckily not a whole lot to paint.

pretty shure each one of the "bumps" is actually a crack...the paint looks like it is drying out and shrinking

I'm with tdr.  My Explorer I had looked like this on the hood.  I don't think they were quite that raised though.
