Headliner Cleaning
« on: July 06, 2008, 05:14:17 PM »
How does everyone clean headliners?  My Fiance's car has some dirty stains on her headliner.  I have APC+, but I don't want to spray it on there and rub because the headliner fabric is so thin and I am afraid of pulling it loose.

yeah I wouldn't use APC+ there either.    I have had incredible results with Folex.  Haven't used it on a headliner but I am sure its fine.

Maybe others will chime in but based on Hwm3 using it, I tried it out on several hard spots in fabric...presto, like a champ.

Thanks for visiting the Cafe, come back often.  There's always something new!

I like ProChem Fine Fabric Shampoo. Use a soft towel and just dab the area, you dont want to scrub.

thanks all.  Hopefully i'll be able to pick up some of that fine shampoo.  I saw someone over at f150online and i think maybe on here use Woolite on the interior... any chance that would work on the headliner?

Woolite should not be used on the interior. It is a detergent and needs to be completely rinsed out, you cant soak the interior with water. This will leave the surface more prone to soiling. It also has optical brighteners in it. Keep Woolite in the laundry room.

Sometimes desperate measures require desparate attempts...

While I totally concur with keeping Woolite out of your detailing aresonal, I have had mild success with extremely dilute APC+ on headliners.  By 'extremely diluted', I mean 30:1 or maybe even a little bit higher.

What you need to consider is that the headliner is a foam-like material (in most cases) and the fabric on the headliner is held in place by a very thin, very sticky glue (high-voc).  Because of that glue, you need to think about ANYTHING that you put on the fabric because the cleaner that you use *WILL* attack the adhesive properties in nearly all cases.

I don't think there's a perfect option here but, careful planning and a VERY concise and collected approach (read: be totally patient in working on it) and you'll get it out.

... Its also held up with screws. How do I know? Because I removed mine to install strobes in the cargo light... Yay!

But now I need some folex to remove greasy fingerprints... :BE:

I've never used Folex on a headliner, but I'd try it before APC+.

I don't think all of them are... but, regardless, the cleaner won't go to work on the screws... my point was that the cleaner being utilized should be gentle enough to NOT go to work on the adhesive.

I was talking about F150 headliners... guess if I am not on an F150 forum I should clarify...

Yeah, I know that APC+ wont eat the screws... I am not that stupid...

But now that I think about it, were you talking about the adhesive that keeps the headliner to the roof (which is nonexistant in my truck... I guess thats where screws come in handy) or the stuff that keeps the foam held to the fabric?

The latter makes more sense now that I think about it...

The headliner is a thin fabric that is nearly always glued to a backing which is typically foam... it's that glue that I'm talking about.

I know you're not "THAT" stupid....  I'm not stabbing at you, chief.  I was just clarifying

But yes, I know that you know I am not quite that dumb... If you thought I was, you would have banned me from ever speaking on the 'other site'...
