Title: 1962 Jaguar Mark II
Post by: Too Stroked on June 13, 2022, 11:41:00 AM
I'd hinted that I might have something "special" coming in for an exterior detail. Well, it finally arrived this past Friday; a 1962 Jaguar Mark II 4 door. For those of you that love old English cars, this thing was truly sexy, but needed some love.

The paint was an older restoration using single stage lacquer paint. (Remember that?) This presented several problems. First, I had no idea how thick it was, so I had to be careful about how much I took off in the correction process. Second, the paint was old (and probably thick) enough to have actually cracked in several places. Get too frisky in one of those areas and bad things could easily happen. Finally, there was some pretty significant marring and a few fairly deep scratches. Fortunately, none of these went through to the primer.

Working with the owner, we came up with a plan that would maximize the shine, but not correct all of the more serious defects so as to minimize the chances of making a problem bigger than it already was.

How did it look when it rolled in? Not bad from a distance.

Up close, it was a slightly different story. First of all, there was a lot - and I mean a lot - of old wax and compound trapped in every nook and cranny. I apparently didn't get any really good shots of it, but trust me, there was a ton.

Then there was the marring / scratching. The roof was the worst.

So, I dove in with the normal wash, clay and dry process. That completed, I spent almost an hour with various detailing brushes trying to get the wax and compound out of all of the tight places - and this car had plenty of them. Then it was time to mask critical areas off, so I didn't just put new stuff back in places I just struggled to remove it. I also went one step farther than normal and used 1/4" masking tape to cover the gaps between the doors since the aged rubber gaskets between them were a real pain to clean. Here's what it looked like all masked up:

Now to polish / correct everything. As usual, I started with the least aggressive techniques first, then stepped up as needed. For me, that meant 3D One on a White LC pad on the Flex. Um, no dice. Next was an Orange LC pad, Better, but not good enough. Finally, I went all the way up to a Yellow Hex Logic Cutting pad with the 3D One and that did it for the first stage. I then stepped back down to a White LC pad and 3D One for the final polish step.

Before attacking the chrome with Optimum Metal Polish, I coated every single rubber gasket with Meguiar's Hyper Dressing - which also went on the tires. Why? Because I wanted to make sure noting stuck to them when I applied the LSP. Then I applied 2 coats of JESCAR Power Lock Polymer Sealant. How did it turn out as I pulled it out for a morning pick up? See what you think.

Great work as usual Tom.   Thanks for sending me the pre work shots tool. Enjoyed the chat.  Also great write up.

I know first hand, jobs like this, you spend a ton of time fixing other's or owners sloppiness when it comes to product etc.

Its the wheels i would dread on this project.   My last experience with single stage laq finish, we used Rotarys then went back with a flex.

I know you love that powerlock, i have never used it.  Would a ceramic coating worked on that given no clear?

JP, Thanks for the kind words and your advice while I was working on this one. You mentioned the wheels and you may have noticed that I didn't devote any before or after shots to them. That's because they were in pretty tough shape and try as I might, I couldn't do anything that really woke them up. Oh, and I tried. I was pretty disappointed.

As for the Power Lock, in my initial discussion with the owner, we talked about what he'd like to see for the LSP. He pretty quickly agreed to the PL over a ceramic coating or wax. It would have been interesting to see what a true ceramic coating would have looked like. Personally, I think they take gloss to a whole new level. That said, he was thrilled with the results.

BTW, the white Jag I posted up last year? Same owner. He was so happy with that one that he brought this one to me. I love happy customers!

Fantastic as expected.  Honestly, the wheels and tires are what really caught my eye more than even the paint.  The idea of those wheels gives me nightmares.  But the paint looks awesome.  You’re going to make this guy go out and buy another jag just to bring it to you.

Funny you should mention that. His plan is to sell this one so he can buy one he's been looking at with a sun roof in it.

I was white knuckled the whole time reading this.

You did a great job on it, I would not had even thought about breathing on it; let alone detailing it.

Great work Tom, the PL LSP did great justice to it; I think it is warmth you cannot get out of coatings.

Thanks for the kind words Steve! Yes, this one was definitely a bit out of my comfort zone. Will I be taking in more like this in the future? I kind of doubt it. I was nervous the whole time I was working on it. I have to admit though, it was one of the sexiest vehicles I've ever worked on. Every single one of my neighbors came over to check it out as I was working on it. I probably have to rinse the drool out of the driveway now.
