Title: 2021 Explorer ST
Post by: Blown F-150 on March 18, 2021, 10:20:08 AM
We decided it was time to trade in the Wife's 2015 X5 and get a new 2021 Explorer ST. My cousin is the Sales Manager at a Ford dealer, so we milked him for everything we could and came away with a decent deal. There was nothing owing on the X5, so we decided to trade in and knock down the cost on the ST, instead of selling privately. I really didn't want to deal with selling privately TBH.

There isn't really a lot that will be done to this thing, however I've put together a little bit of a plan. We spent about 2g's less on it than we planned, so I'm just rolling that into add-ons for it.

I made a small detailing supply order
- Poor Boy's Ceramic Coat
- Poor Boy's Trim Coat
- Bunch of Pads
- New interior detailing Brush set
- MF's

The plan is to remove the "EXPLORER" badge on the hood, prep and coat the paint and trim. Then it goes to the shop for Expel Plus Extreme PPF and Ceramic window tint on the front windows. It came from the dealer with "no prep", so the paint is nice and un-molested.

From a "Parts order" standpoint, I have a few things coming.
- Black Lug nuts
- Custom Ford Badges
- 3rd row Weathertech matt
- Cargo Area Weathertech Matt
- LED Rear Turn Signal and Reverse bulbs

From a programming standpoint, I'll be making a bunch of changes with ForScan
- Double honk when you exit with key and it's running - Disable
- Fake Engine noise through speakers - Disable
- Hyperflash rear turn signals - Disable
- "Back seat check" nanny - Disable
- Add some features to the digital gauges from the Platinum
- Bambi Mode
- Anything else I can find that looks good to do

Long term plans in "discussion" with the Wife
- Summer Tires and wheels
- Lower Springs
- Exhaust

It may get a tune later in life. I have a new tuner coming that can tune multiple vehicles and my calibrator will give me a tune for it for free. We'll see as I don't want a warranty issue with all the Ford "big brother" nannies that it has. It's quick as it is, so not sure.

I know we got a teaser picture in the other thread but come on?  Nothing?  No pictures at all in the first post of a new vehicle thread?  You’re probably the kind of guy that doesn’t dress his wheel wells...

Any recommendation on prep/treatment for the interior bits while it's still new?

Damn.  That’s filthy.  You should be ashamed of posting a picture like that.

Hell, it’s cleaner than my truck.  Sort of.  I assume right now Atleast half of my truck is clean.

Use that PB Trim Coat.  See what happens.  Haha. Be a guinea pig.  It’s the wife’s ride, right?

Thanks to Mike, I called the painter and am changing up the FORD badges. The parts that are Chrome OEM, will be gloss Black to match the grill. The parts that blue OEM, will be Atlas Blue to match the paint. A little less Black now, just a little.

No no.  I don’t want credit for that.  I’m with it, but I want to reserve my credit for when you’re on you’re fourth set of wheels and your third performance upgrade.  Haha

Auto geek couldn’t ship the PoorBoys coatings across the boarder by air, so I had to find another way.

Found someone north of the boarder that stocks them. Ordered up.

Apparently they didn’t have a ground shipping option to Canada.

It’s funny though, I just found out that where I ordered from, get their stuff from AutoGeek. It’s just that they order enough to have it sent up via freight.

They are in NY ( Albany I think ), so I don't know if that is a help or not.. :dunno:

Is this one of those stupid vehicles Ford makes that still uses a manual folding hood prop/support?  It amazes me when these expensive vehicles, especially the higher end versions, come with such stripped down options.

It basically a program that lets you access the different program modules and make changes.

So you can do things like open all your windows with your key fob, have your fogs and high beams on at the same time, enable features that are on higher trim level vehicles, etc.

Does one program work on different vehicles or do you have to get one specific to your model?

It works on a bunch of Ford and Mazda stuff.
Forscan.org to get the software, 2 month license is free and you can keep extending it.
The only thing you need otherwise is a OBD adapter. I use this one, it seems to work really well.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081VQVD3F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081VQVD3F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

You have to have a Window's PC or a Windows Emulator.

For my F150 and the ST, folks have shared Spreadsheets on changes you can make in the code. Having said that though, there usually a configuration tool for each module tat let's you make changes via the UI and just have to write them to the module after you are done.

This gives you an idea

Speaking of tint, my truck windows in the front have a red tint to them when looking from the inside out.  I hate it.  It’s subtle but it messes with my depth perception.  I need to have them retinted with my guy I usually use.

Yeah.  It’s not as bad as it sounds.  It’s ever so subtle but it’s enough to change the hue on everything.  It’s especially noticeable in the sky.  It seems to have a flattening affect though where everything you’re looking at looks two dimensional.  They look normal from the outside.  I just want to ceramic tint it to match.

So did you do the reverse lights too?  I want to swap to all LED but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.  The dually fender lights don’t seem to pop and stand out enough in the mirror so I feel like it’s a matter of time before I clip one on something.

Yeah, I did the reverse bulbs as well. They are not on the level of a set of cubes or anything, but a massive improvement over the original halogen bulbs. You can see the difference in the rear view camera at night.

Before you jump to LEDs, you may want to read this thread by a friend of mine who really knows his stuff on lighting. I went with his recommendations on everything in my Tacoma and he was spot on. This thread is just on reverse lights though. And if memory serves me correctly, your Ford dually uses the same 921 bulbs as a Tacoma.

I have the license plate light bar from VLeds.  I love it.  But I think I just want to do a complete LED overhaul so everything looks crisper and cleaner.  I think the only thing LED on the truck are the dually fender lights and cab lights.  I think both could be upgraded though to something nicer.  I mentioned tint in another thread.  I think my current tint is a problem as far as seeing the dually fender lights clearly.

Peeled off the dealer badge (sorry cuz) and the explorer badge off the hood.

A little at a time.  I have never once looked at one of those dealer stickers and gave it another thought.  I really think they’re a waste.  I’m sure there is some research out there that proves it’s beneficial.

I was taking the back roads home from Walmart today.  Actually they are all backroads but that’s besides the point.  I looked out over the farm land and realized it was a perfect opportunity to show the tint.  It looks harsher when compared directly to the windshield like this.  I should have tried to include the back window as well but this was very impromptu.  Keep in mind you can’t tell at all from the outside.  It’s nearly identical to the factory tint.

Prepped the front clip for the PPF appointment on Tuesday.

Mild clay with QD to make sure the paint was clean before correction. A little bit of “rail dust” was about it.
M101 with a 3.5” pad for spot correction. Followed by M205 on a white pad.

Came out pretty good overall.

It’s the “Ford Performance” version. So basically a sport package with some more power, etc.

Screen protector on, I like the matte, but not happy I put a mark in it with the squeegee. We’ll see how it settles when the solution dries.

Decent little kit that it comes with. You just need a drop of soap and some water.

I have a bad habit of looking at a thread with the intention of coming back to respond and then completely forgetting about it.  That screen is huge and am I right in assuming it retracts back in to the dash?

I had an abrupt job change, and have not had time to try my PB coating yet.

Did you get it applied before the PPF ?

Any pointers on it.
- EG: going from OPT OptiglossCoat to this ?

I got some new coating rags from detailed image ( rag shack ones ) that I was going to try and I still have the suede towels that I have used on OPT for years.

Honestly I haven’t had the time. I took the last week of May off and think that will be when it gets done.

I just polished the paint and left it naked for the PPF. Everything I read stats that you should top the PPF with the coating.

The tune was free, thanks to a friend who tunes and the intercooler was on a very small, but enticing sale, so I jumped on it.

I’m holding off on getting and wheels and tires. The wife saw one with black wheels and really liked it. I want to steer away from black, but it’s her car so we’ll see.

Bought the set from market place for less than a grand, so we’ll try them out. Being 22’s, I am thinking they may ride a little rough, but we’ll give them a shot. The tires are too small, so the proper size are on order and we’ll mount them up.

If we don’t mind the ride, I’ll wait for them to get curbed and then see if I can convince her to try a different color and get them powder coated. IMO, even a gloss black would look better than the matte black on this car.

Just the wheels are over $2k up here, so I was fine with swapping tires and selling these ones and recouping some funds.

Tires currently are 265’s and these wheels need a minimum of 285’s. I would do 295’s, but they aren’t available in the tire I want.

The guy wanted the “stretched” look.

Whipple intercooler installed. I took my time as I didn’t want to break something or forget something.

I have to grab some screenshots of the logs, but big improvement with intake temps. The stocker was 10 rows and the new one is 33 rows, big size difference.

Ford used rivets to hold the bottom of the louvre assembly, so after drilling them out, I just used rivet nuts and bolts to re-assemble.

285’s mounted up on the 22’s. Just waiting for the proper lug nuts to show up before I can mount them.

They are way better then the 265’s visually, but the rim is still slightly exposed. 295’s would have been perfect, but can’t get them in the tire I wanted.

It’s sitting in the basement.  I got it for one of my new work trucks with the plan of doing it before it hit the road for the first time.  Then the truck showed up and I decided I did t want it.  So I took the last new truck we got which is a similar truck but has already hit the road.  So now it requires more work and I haven’t had the chance yet.

ST received some paint cleaning, minor corrections and ceramic coating.

What was used.

Nano Coatex premium car wash soap
Nano Coatex Iron Remover
Poor Boys Bug Squash
Meguiars MF wash mitt
Meguiars mild clay
Optimum No Rinse @QD ratio
Rupes Bigfoot 15 DA with white Lake Country 5.5” pad
Porter Cable 7424xp DA with white Lake Country 3” pad
Meguiars M205 light polish
Poor Boys Paint Prep
Poor Boys Ceramic Coating
Poor Boys Trim Ceramic Coating
Nano Coatex Glass Coat Prep
Nano Coatex Glas Coat

Prep was was the usual two bucket wash. Nothing fancy, just did a wash and rinse followed by Bug Squash on the front to get bugs guts off and Iron Remover to get some brake and rail dust out of the paint. Another rinse and then ONR and clay to clean the paint before polishing

Clay did take some stuff out.

Next was M205 on a white 5.5” pad with the Rupes polisher. Normally for light correction like this, I would use a 6.5” pads, but with all the curves, the smaller pad was more effective. I did minimal pad cleaning between panels, so opted to swap pads more often. I got the paint to a pretty decent spot with this combo, so I swapped to the PC DA and a 3” pad to get some tighter spots and the black door/window trim panels.

The whole car got a wipe down with Poor Boys Paint prep (really just a ISO mix with a bit of lubricant).

I applied the PoorBoys Ceramic Coat on the hood and front clip first and than went around the rest of the car. Roof was last and the a second coat on “high traffic” areas and the front clip. Overall the application was very easy and I just took my time and inspected a lot, watching for high spots that needed to be leveled. It was pretty easy to feel where you had good coverage.

Next up was the trim coating. Same basic process as the paint coating, although it seems to be a bit “thicker” of a application. Went on pretty quick and easy and seemed to add a touch of gloss to the trim.

All of the glass was polished with a orange pad and M105. Then hit with Nano Coatex Glass Coat prep. The windshield and sunroof got 3 coats, while the side and back glass got two coats. Pretty easy stuff to work with overall.

Now to let it all cure and then I’ll pull it out of the garage for some pics. Very glad to have it done and looking forward to using some of this stuff on the truck!

Maybe with some better light they would show better in a picture. They look pretty good in person. I’ve ordered some 5mm shims for the rears as they sit in a bit further than the fronts (so does stock).

The ride is closer to the 21’s than I thought. I was pretty worried at first and the. Realized that they set them at 50psi, lol.

Really, it just provides another layer of protection more than anything. I think that ceramics are pretty great and all, but with the constant removal of bugs, I think the topper helps the ceramic survive.

I get that.  But what’s special about them?  Only thing I can imagine is that they have a special bond to ceramics that other products aren’t able to bond to it.

The one I’m using is a SI02 based spray. The idea is that it is a durable sealant by itself, but also bonds to a ceramic coating in a useful way.

This may just be the “flavour of the week” but silica Dioxide based products seems to offer a good balance of protection and ease of application.

It’s boarding on looking like a “wagon”, but I think it’s on point.

I didn’t think the black wheels would grow this much on me, but I’m liking them. I still think they would be better as a gloss black.

I want to disagree with you on the wagon look but I actually like a lot of the sportier wagons.  Coincidentally, Cassie has an outback which is a wagon and we went the other direction with that and stuffed some smaller wheels with fat tires in there and I really like it.  So what the hell do I know.

I find it kinda interesting. Both Heather and I have received several random compliments on the ST while out and about.

I’ve hit a few “g-out” dips and the suspension handles them pretty darn well. Springs are probably all settled now, lol.

Right around 2000miles of driving and we are at our furthest point away from home for a week or so. This car is absolutely awesome for doing a road trip. Very comfortable and some of the tech like adaptive cruise control are so nice to have.

Stopped at a buddies place along the way and I found someone that wanted to get rid of their roof rails, so we pulled the car apart (have to drop the headliner) and got them swapped.

Seriously, who does this.  Hahaha.  This is probably the final straw for me ever being surprised by anything you do.

I do really like that ride though.  And you’re right, adaptive cruise control, although on paper sounds unimpressive and boring, I’ve found to be awesome on Cassie’s car on trips.

Gotta seize the opportunity when you can . It was a Ford tech that wanted to remove his rails, but would cost $800+ in parts to do it. I wanted to add roof rails, but the kit is over a grand and on back order. I figured for a few beer and a couple hours worth of time, it’s a good deal

I think it looks like more of a station wagon with them, but they are needed so they went on. Being able to run a box on the roof will give us some much needed space on future trips.

I thought about wrapping the roof and some of the C-Pillar to give it a little contrast. Not sure though as I’ve now heard a few people that removed partially wrapped vehicles and now the paint looks different where the wrap was because of fading where the paint wasn’t wrapped.

Hahahaha, no!

Sway bar was delivered while we were gone, so I may try and get that done next weekend.

Not much else going on with it, other than it needs a serious clean up.

The longer term game plan is to put a intake in it, so we have a serviceable filter and POSSIBLY an exhaust

Finally got around to installing some stuff.

AFE intake, Fenfab charge pipe and Fenfab ECM cover. Small stuff, but definitely made a improvement in throttle response and cleaned up under the hood. Waiting on the strut tower brace and I’m going to order a aluminum coolant tank. Then it will be done under the hood and time to start thinking about exhaust.

Not really given it’s still a sealed box. You can hear the turbos a little with the windows down. You can pop the clear piece of plastic out of the box to get more noise, but it will also inhale hot engine bay air that way.
