I watched the whole thing. It wasn’t bad at all. Pretty cool actually. Camera angle takes a bit to get used to. It’s frustrating always wanting to see a little further ahead and not being able to. That said I would invest in a chest mount. It’s a more interesting angle as long as you have it pointed correctly. I’m not sure which GoPro you’re using. Judging by the stability it’s atleast a 7. I know you’re a man with very little free time but do some research on which settings are best for the GoPro because stock GoPro profile is horrible. Use flatter settings and fix them in post with color grading and sharpness and contrast. Some of the light was really harsh at times. I have links I can share from a mountain biker who is also a professional photographer who has really good explanations for the settings and color grading.

I am using a Hero 9 Black. (shocker). Thanks for the info on the settings, I am not using those stock settings but i should of turned down a few things. I too have been watching "best settings" for mt bike and they vary, so I kind of picked a middle ground on several of them. You get so many opinions and suggestions on YT you kind of have to experiment and see what works best for you. I can tell you that I am shooting in 24fps in 4K and my current mac can't process 4K so I am using my work MacBook Pro....so looks like a new mac is in my future.
I am still tinkering with settings but will get it dialed in for bright days as well as overcase. I don't know how to fix color gradient in post yet. I am using iMovie and its something i am comfortable using but I don't know all the features, I need to youtube post editing color gradient vids for sure. Thanks for subscribing, my son will be thrilled as he walks the halls at his school with followers....LOL

Sorry missed a point you made. I am using a Chin Mount for my GoPro...I do have the Chest harness but with my hydration pack, it can't use it....however, I am on the backorder list for the USWE chest harness adapter for my hydration pack. Once that comes in, I will move the GoPro to the chest...I also have a rear facing seat mount that I am going to use from time to time to give a whole other perspective. Gonna be fun.

MikeI’ve never used a specific software long enough to learn it inside and out and become comfortable with it. That said, the latest program I used was Divinci Resolve which is free and pretty powerful. Color grading is simple. However, my laptop absolutely hates Hero 9 footage. I can’t edit it at all so I am sitting on hours of quad footage I can’t do anything with and that’s only 1080/30. I am waiting to go back to work in the spring and hopefully will be in a situation where I can get myself a Mac Book Pro with the M1 chip that’s crushing everything right now. Mac Mini is an option but I want to be more portable so I can dump files and edit in the camper on the go. But that new M1 chip Apple came out with is impressive.

One thing that changed how enjoyable my last videos were, Atleast to me, was running two go pros on my SxS and then one on Cassie’s helmet. It gave a lot of variation but added a whole mess to the editing side. I thought you might be using the 9 because the horizon was pretty locked on. The Max Lense mod is pretty cool and will get wider with better horizon lock but I think you lose some of the resolutions. With the Max Lense mod you can completely roll a vehicle and the horizon will remain the same but the vehicle will appear to be flipping as if the camera wasn’t mounted to it. Disregard all of that info if you’re already familiar with it. It might be too wide for mountain biking anyway.
By the way, my YouTube channel has been toast for ages. I never use it. Back when I started it, the quality was awful and was downgraded so much I couldn’t stand it and switched to Vimeo. YouTube is much better now.

I do need to correct my cam settings, I am using GoPro color but going to drop it down and use post production to color grade it later. The fun really starts at 11 min in for the jump lines...keep in mind folks, I am 48 years old.

yeah thanks MikeI struggle keeping my edits down to a time that first of all makes people willing to watch and then keeps them from getting tired of watching. You being able to talk in your videos help maintain interest. I always fee like I need to include certain things because I found them fun or interesting even though on video they don’t really come across as it did in person.

Anything in the woods is difficult, especially this time of year with no leaves on the trees and all of that penetrating light because it creates so much contrast.
I don’t think I mentioned it in the above comment but you can also turn the hyper smooth to Boost. I think the way it works is it crops down on the video more with the higher the level of boost.

That video was a definite improvement. The camera angle was nice. The sun was harsh in some of those shots where it was head on but there might not be much you can do about that. It made the leaves look too sharp and overly crispy. Again, not sure if that’s fixable. Colors looked pretty good. I watched it in the higher resolution and it looked great.
Do you know what shutter speed you’re using. Should be close to 1/50 if you’re shooting at 24fps. If you can achieve that I would test it before you shoot an entire video. Not sure how it might affect going in and out of bright light.
I got a kick out of Nick checking up on the brakes when he split those trees and him apologizing. I for sure would have clipped on out of sheer panic. Haha. He’s killing it!

I’m that guy when we go riding that takes an extra half hour to get all my sh!t together and get the cameras set up while everyone impatiently waits for me. And then all the battery swaps because we are out for hours and hours. I’ll go through eight batteries a day sometimes between cameras.

yeah totally,You’re going to hate it. Not the actually video quality but the stabilization just isn’t there. Last time I rode in Tennessee I had a 4 facing rearward and a 7 facing forward. And a 4 on Cassie’s helmet. The 7 blew them out of the water. With all of them before the 7 you had to be careful how it was mounted and your movements so you didnt make the viewer sick from all the movement. I have a 3+, two 4s, a 7 and a 9. The 4 was able to make some shots look more aggressive and raw. Made you feel a little more like you were part of it. So I don’t think they’re totally useless. It makes for some good extra scenes.

You can skip around these two videos for an example. Anything facing backwards or mounted to a helmet is a 4. SxS facing forward is the 7 where they really introduced hyper smooth.

Those videos were before I discovered color grading and was just running mostly stock GoPro settings. Disappointing really because they could have been so much better given what I know now. I did color grading and full custom settings for my hiking videos from Acadia National Park in Maine. Also had custom settings on my last trip out doing some local riding but that footage sits uneditable on my current laptop. It was peak autumn season too. Not sure why it’s so different than my hero 7 footage that I could easily edit. Higher bit rate maybe? I may hit the laptop with some more memory to get by for now. See if it helps.

Of course...ok, bought another 9 directly off GoPro b/c they had a deal, 150 off the camera, extra bat, 64g card and all i had to do was buy the 1 year subscription for 49 bucks/...so net net, I saved around 200 bucks.That’s the same deal I got on my 9 when I bought it. As a plus the subscription saves you a bunch of money on accessories... like the max Lense mod I plan to get.
We are going to surprise the kids with this one..it will be theirs that I get privileges too. They can use on their bikes and daughter can use for horse etc.

The cool thing about the rear shots, for me and likely for you as well, is it gives a good oncoming view of those behind you. This is great when I ride and can rooster tail some mud on people or for power sliding around and kicking up dust, people accelerating towards me from behind and then the front one can catch them actually passing and pulling away. All adds to the dynamic of the video.

Yea agreed, much better than the 3+. So if you guys got any tips on how to make it connect to your phones better, I am all ears...i just need to connect to properly aim from time to time and for whatever reason, gopro makes that really difficult. Sometimes I spend 15 min getting them to connect, then I have lost a lot of battery life. Very frustrated with that aspect.

I hate the connection to mobile. It works but it’s very slow. These batteries don’t last long enough so as it is so you just want to be able to power on and go. There’s nothing more frustrating and disappointing than finding out after the fact that you had it at a bad angle.

For me I have to do two things. 1: Make sure the VPN is turned off on the phone...2. power up the cameras first then open the app....its kind of like our DJI stuff...one works better started first. I always turn on the controller first...then the drone AFTER a clean boot.

I am pretty disgusted with GoPro right now...this whole connection thing.....when I tried to get support, the tech was texting to me as if I was a 5 year old. I ended the conversation and hit the web trying to find better support and I DID. I did manually upload updates to them which is said to be better. However, I am lets say average 400 bucks in each for these cameras...the max lens mod is ANOTHER 100 bucks. Yeah, I will wait for that price to drop but Mike....i thought the cam already had locked horizon even if you didn't have the lens mod. I though that is what the boost did, was lock the horizon.

It is $100 but keep in mind you purchased the subscription to GoPro when you bought the latest camera which gives you 30% (I think) off accessories from GoPro’s website. I’m not trying to convince you. Just throwing it out there.

I agree that the field of view appears to be cropped down tighter and it takes away from the video with the Max Lense Mod. That said, I prefer the chest mount angle anyway. I like that added bit of the background and being able to see ahead. I love how the bike is moving around the field of view while everything else stays dead level and centered.
I want one of these but I spend half of my time while riding, reaching up to wipe off mud and water from the lense of my GoPro. I dont think that would be as easy with the exposed convex design of the Max Lense Mod. I’ve also been drilled in the goggles by large rocks being kicked up by the person ahead of me while cruising at 30-40mph. I can’t imagine what one ill placed rock would do to that lense.

On a side note, when he switches to chest mount from chin mount, the over saturation is an eye killer. He sorts it out pretty quick but wow that looked bad.

I have a chest mount already but with my USWE hydration pack, I can't have both b.c it buckles in the middle. However, USWE makes a chest mounted adapter strap system but its on back order until Mid Feb, I am on the list. That said, i am actually packing up right now to head up to Northwoods Trail system in Hot Springs for a rare solo weekend getaway. Just me my truck and my bike.
I will take my chest harness and a couple of water bottles so i leave the pack at my truck for a lap and ride with the chest mount. Also going to do some VLOG sytel videos on the way to document why we are doing this channel, our vision and goals. Yes I plan on scaling back my videos to 10 min or less. Its hard when your trail is 10-20 miles or your ride is 15-25 miles. I did also get the remote the remote can control up to 5 cameras in multi mode so I plan on doing a side by side of the front view with the rear view if I can figure out how to do that using iMovie.
you see, that is the real magic...taking our shitting footage and making it cool. I love Berm Peak. Seth does a really good job.
This guy is who we follow and admire. Something about how he does his vids, they just suck you in and you can't turn away. I want that user experience.
I guess I can learn from the Drone videos...i was told early on, 5-12 seconds then change clips....keeps the viewer interested. We'll see.

I watched that vid. I still like my Chin Mount but I do like this max lens mod on the chest but holy crap did he totaly over warm that section of video. That is too much for me and it almost washes out in color that isn't real.
so that said, for this weekend, I am going with Chin mount and rear seat mount....HOWEVER I have a new mount that I got in...its what they call an Out In Front. Basically you will only be able to see the top of my front tire and the trail. I may try that out this weekend b/c my new night riding lights mount where my Garmin is current mounted so I need to find a new spot for that. The cockpit is getting crowded with gear. There is only so much real estate on that bar and stem.
So I can’t find a local source for one, strange... guess I’ll check EBayI am ordering the max lens mod Jason, so I can provide some feedback if you like. I’m getting it specifically for horizon lock when Mtn biking. I think it would look super cool when diving into corners, etc.Now we are talking. I have considered it for the side by side and quad. Every time I have myself convinced I need it, it’s out of stock. Probably because it’s almost always out of stock.

You may be better off getting it direct from GoPro....consider the subscription as Mike points out, you get a good discount. I will prob get the mod for 1 of the my 2 9's....but shit, this thing has cost me some serious cash....2 9's, cases, batterys, chargers, tripods, new Macbook pro....memory cards.....f me...

Then I get riding and realize I’m a muddy mess and do t want to mess with everything and no one wants to wait for me to rig something else up just to stop a short time later and change it again. Riding solo though, I’d probably be able to put together a good video including angles from tripods and trees of me coming in hot and sliding corners and what not. But then it’s boring not having anyone to ride with and get them on film. POV is boring and you want that third person perspective sometimes.

Yeah given the 9's popularity and function, they are also a tad hard to get....the mods are tougher.

Yeah totally had me too at the 12 for Zero....I used the Education discount (for my daughter) LOL...it is 10%. My company provides an 8% discount so the ed one was better. I opted for the customized mac, hence the 16g of ram vs 8. Why? B.c my current macbook pro is a 16g and it does make a difference. Gives you more umph for these 4K videos.

I was poking around on Facebook Marketplace and saw a Mavic Pro 2 for $1000 US. Turns out it flew for about 15 minutes and then was put back in the box when he found out he needed a license to fly. It’s just the base kit, so I will have to grab some extras, but couldn’t pass it up for the price.
Now I gotta figure out how it works, lol.

Thinking the fly more bundle is the best bang for the buck to get a couple extra batteries for the mavic.

It looks really nice, I’m just going with what I can get for a decent price first. I gotta make good use of it before spending that kinda cheddar.I think the suction cup mount would be great for you to be able to mount it in nearly infinite locations on the outside of the truck. And a mixed bag of different elbows and such to be able to get it pointed where you want it. Different roll bar or tube clamps for it can get you cool shots of the suspension and stuff if you get creative.

The hardest part for me is just how much downtime you create by swapping angles all the time. I’m ok with it myself but I feel like it annoys everyone else. You really need to be with people who want those shots and are just as interested as you. Also sucks that almost all the footage is from onboard my rig which means there’s rarely any video of me doing stuff.
Also super jealous their dog is so good on the trail. I’d end up running mine over because they would be trying to figure out a way to bite the tires or they would run 2 feet from the side and be in my blind spot the whole time.

LOL....thanks man, but that is a proline jump line..this is just the top side....I film the whole run, more vids coming. OK....mics and stuff. This is a whole conversation. Short answer is, the reason why you can hear me so well, is that's b/c the 9's have front,side and rear mics.... and I am only like 6 inches away from the back of the camera on my helmet chin mount. Lastly the super trick....I have the Wind Noice OFF on the camera and using a wind sock on it. That is why you hear my heart rate.....LOL. Those mics are super sensitive.

I think the two videos side by side is a lot to take in. I like the concept but I like it more as a shorter take rather than the main footage. I think I’d like it from the forward facing view with parts of the bike in the frame, switching to the rear view and then occasionally at certain times like more intense sections or what not, use the double view, even if it means maybe showing the section forward first and then back tracking the video and doing the rear shot or the double shot again so you can see both. I don’t know. Just ideas. It’s a shame you cant stop and set up a third party view from within the trees to catch you fully in the frame. I imagine it really breaks your momentum and pace and not to mention having to go back the other direction to make the run again.

And yes i know you didn't mean to belittle that downhill....but this proline and Lucky 13 are legit....given you have probably longer runs, these trails were built by Gravity Logic...same folks who built Thunder Mountain, Whistler and a lot of trails in BC. Gravity logic knows how to build gravity runs. Bluejay is considered a "proline". but its not really as aggressive...some of those table tops are 12 foot in length, a couple of the doubles, I can't clear. Lucky 13 has some big gap jumps...the biggest is almost 20 fit. I can't clear it, I take the B Line. What you really need to watch on YouTube is NWA, a trail feature called "Drop The Hammer". youtube that and see these road gap drops...they are flipping insane. I am doing them in a couple months.

Just reread this and realized you were referring to Dirt Merchant. I don't know this trail but I now the lines from videos. Ok, you got me here. Bluejay isn't Dirt Merchant. Those gaps and drops are just about 1/3 larger and more like Lucky 13 up here in Northwoods. That said, Bluejay is still a proline but I would say to compare, they are different, not quite as expansive. Now, Drop the Hammer section of Cease and Desist in NWA, is totally legit uber proline that rivals Fort Hood. Can you clear/clean that run at Dirt Merchant? If you can, I want to ride with you! I only have a few buddies at my ability level....otherwise i get bored a lot with some friends b.c I have to wait, stop, wait, stop, wait....ugh. Oh and my other friends usually have mechanicals and we have to stop for stupid stuff that they should of checked prior to swinging a leg over...very frustrating.

Jason, I know you opted for the 512GB MacBook Pro because you use external drives. The 1TB option is $200 more but it looks like external drives are cheaper than that. I have no experience with Macs so is there anything more to consider? Do they use any proprietary drives or anything where I would need a specific drive that maybe is more expensive?I’ll bite, who is she?
That hard switchback made me laugh. I know I’d come in hot and go for a ride. I’m too wreckless for sports like this.
I think the two videos side by side is a lot to take in. I like the concept but I like it more as a shorter take rather than the main footage. I think I’d like it from the forward facing view with parts of the bike in the frame, switching to the rear view and then occasionally at certain times like more intense sections or what not, use the double view, even if it means maybe showing the section forward first and then back tracking the video and doing the rear shot or the double shot again so you can see both. I don’t know. Just ideas. It’s a shame you cant stop and set up a third party view from within the trees to catch you fully in the frame. I imagine it really breaks your momentum and pace and not to mention having to go back the other direction to make the run again.

I do so much in the cloud that I don't need a ton of storage and yes I do use external drives for DJI and GoPro....my "movie library" was MASSIVE on my work machine, 170g. So I moved that to external so i coud edit more videos.
As for drives, you can pretty much use anything. I try and buy the better of the external HDD's....and i also format them to exfat so they can be used on both mac and pc. (Just in case)
I just needed more horse power thus I oped for the new Apple chip vs intel. They say its a better chip set and runs with much less power consumption which is good if you are remote a lot. I have this tiny 12" macbook pro that I picked up from a neighbor for 200 bucks a couple of years back. It has been my main machine for several years....to me that is the main advantage of Mac's they work for 5+ years b/c of the OS updates...only thing that really changes is chipsets and boards. i still have some older iMacs that still work just fine but they can't process 4k anything. So I am happy to have a modern laptop on the way. If you don't mind the extra cash, spring for the 1tb but i didn't need it. I have always wanted more space but again, my use cases have changed. I use google drive and google photos for everything so that frees up all my space...additionally I no longer use iTunes for music...since we moved to Sonos in this house, I just use their servcies and pretty much live on Spotify for 99.9 of all our music.

To me the only real benift will be speed. When things are on your hard drive they are faster to get to...they are faster to load to the net. So for me, that would be a consideration but once I finish up a video, I leaving it on the HDD until its loaded to the web...then I move it to the external drive. Is it worth it? Sure, their hard drivers are good, solid state. (may want to double check that). but a good external drive is cheaper than 200 bucks. 512 is good enough for me. Its what is on my work machine.

But I am probably returning my GoPro's. Cannot get them to connect for preview. Just did a 1.5 hour ride and the footage is totally useless b.c I was not able to properly aim the cameras due to preview not working. Rebooted phone, removed app, reloaded...spent 45 min in the parking lot today trying to get them to work, said the f word it and well, useless material.

They are escalating...he said let me send you 2 new cameras, I was like nope, i will return them....when I said that he said that normally escalation takes 24 hours, he said he will do it now. We'll see but I a getting my shit together to box this suckers up if they can't solve.

This for sure isn't 1 camera, both act the same way so either its Android 11 or something else. I am not running the VPN at all....and it will connect say every 20th time. The ONLY thing GoPro suggested was to change the Wifi to 2.4ghz. Its pretty frustrating.

found a work around to the connection problem on my own.This doesn’t exactly make you feel better about the situation but you will get better and more confident in your setup and you won’t rely on double checking the frame of your shot each time. I know that’s not the point.
If you take the camera, turn it on....then wait 20 seconds...THEN swipe down and hit connections, then hit app....then on the app search for camera...it finds in in less than 30 seconds and connects.
If I open the app and turn on the camera and vise versa order, it doesn't connect first 10 trys. I burn 10 min before it connects but if I put the camera in pair mode, it connects in less than 1 min total. On the flip side, if you decide to bail on GoPro and switch over to DJI or Insta, I’d be very intrigued by your hands on opinion. I never seriously considered the DJI but I did consider the Insta for its versatility and sensor size.
Now that I have the MacBook, I have a video from October I need to put together, I hope to be able to leave for Tennessee on Sunday morning but they want snow almost everyday this week so who knows but that will be another video. Then I want to try to do something around the house just experimenting with different angles and mounting locations to see what I can put together where I’m. It annoying anyone else by slowing them down.

So what’s the plan for a GoPro alternative? I know you’re a DJI fanboy as am I and I’m just speculating but soon Ryan will be as well. I’ve never been sold on the DJI action cam. I feel they took the GoPro and tried to one up their camera. The Insta has always intrigued me though. I feel like they tried to go their own road in the action camera world. Does that put the YouTube channel on hold for a while? I’d be curious how the stability of others stacks up against GoPro. GoPro really has their hyper smooth dialed in.

The only thing I did was get more memory b/c my current work machine has 16g of memory and it handles 4K with ease...with the new Apple chip, I am anxious to see much better it performs as they say it's about 20% better than the intel chips.
So what’s the plan for a GoPro alternative? I know you’re a DJI fanboy as am I and I’m just speculating but soon Ryan will be as well. I’ve never been sold on the DJI action cam. I feel they took the GoPro and tried to one up their camera. The Insta has always intrigued me though. I feel like they tried to go their own road in the action camera world. Does that put the YouTube channel on hold for a while? I’d be curious how the stability of others stacks up against GoPro. GoPro really has their hyper smooth dialed in.

I almost bought the One R myself when they came out but it wasn’t the right time to buy a camera for me. I was also heavily considering a 360 camera at the time and the Insta would have accomplished both depending on the mod you buy. Then I just moved on to the GoPro Hero 9 because I liked the specs and I just feel like there is something missing from the 360 world and I’m just not sure what they is yet. I just feel it’s too early to jump on that wagon yet.So really from a hardware standpoint your personal MacBook is quite different from your work MacBook. The M1 chip means new graphics card and processor, correct? Everything is integrated in to the M1. Regardless if it’s better than what you are using already and what you are using is better than what I have, then I’m in for a treat. Actually, i got about 40 min of recording and about 1.5 hours of standbye time...i just saw that insta360 is only like 17 min in 360 mode and 25 min in 4K....so man, I am already regretting this decision.

I have a new plan.
I am going to keep 1 9. and mainly use for chin mount or bar mount or wherever I am filing to use so i can talk, the audio is really, really good on the 9. So that being said, I ordered the 360 but I am going to use that as my second camera....that way I can get 360 or 4K and i won't use the audio on that one.
This gives me 2 things. 1 a working gopro that I know how to aim on my chin mount. if they fix the connection stuff then maybe I consider another 9 down the road.

Ok. 360 One R showed up today. Out of the box and updated in 3 min. Preview works in less than 30 seconds. Pretty slick. Still thinking if keeping one go pro 9. Hell I may keep them all. Already cancelled my account with GoPro so there that to deal with.Keep them all! I like you’re style!

Moves are bad ass...we love them. We took to to OK for our Greek Christmas, Android lets you pair up to 5 speakers in stereo...it was awesome in the Cabin.
We are for sure a Sonos home. Every room in the house plus outside has Sonos in it. Stuff is great.

No review on the new Mac b.c its essentially the same machine that I use for work...albeit with the new M1 chip.
I have to say I was a tad freaked out the first time I watched it try to play a 4K video, it had a few stop starts but I think the machine had other things still going on in the background. But other than that for me, its a nice machine. I do think the Intel core chips may be a tad faster to render but time will tell. 4K is a resource hog no matter what machine you are using. The good news, it output to file just fine so I am happy to have a personal machine to edit videos and not use my work machine. We have key loggers on all our equipment so I have to watch what I type even.
I am pleased with it thus far....we had cold temps today with record lows...but I did get the 360 cam out and tested it out of the sun roof of the truck...its pretty freaking cool and at 50 mph the wind noise was shocking muted. So I need to wait for the temps to raise up to test it on the front of the helmet...that said, i am about 85% sure I am going to keep both gopro's. I canceled my amazon returns for batteries and windslayers and the camera. I did test again today and they both connected but just takes FOREVER and you have to do it in a sequential order or it doesn't work. I just think at this point, I need to just be smart in my prep with the gopros in order for them to properly connect and aim. What I am planning on doing is once I can get the chest mount to preview...I am going to set it where I want it, then devise a plan on making a template out of wood or something that I can copy the angles of aim and not rely on the app...I can use the "wedge" to set the view based off trial and error. I think that will make for way faster set up where I can just hit record and boom its works. does that make sense?

What doesn’t make sense is I can’t offload GoPro files from the camera to the MacBook using the sub-c cable. I can’t figure it out. GoPro says connected to usb but MacBook doesnt see it anywhere.

It couldn’t keep up with certain trails I was on and got a little crazy. If it got bad enough it locked up and skipped and seemed to have to find its legs again. I have the GoPro mount for the dogs and it didn’t stand a chance at staying smooth. I’m going to have to try the Mac lense kod just out of curiosity.

I get it, I know macs are expensive but I think you really get your money's worth over the years they work. I have several iMacs that still work, yes they don't render 4K but they do work and are functional. That is kind of the thing with Macs but again, totally get it.

Well yeah, spent my money on the truck, don’t have a ton for other stuff. Probably doesn’t seem like it, but I budget for everything. If the “ play” account is empty, that’s it. I can get a PC with comparable (better in some area) specs for a third of the cost of the Mac. The other issue I have are things like my tuning software that isn’t mac friendly, even though I’m aware there are work arounds. Lots of Apple products in the house, just think this might not be the best fit for the cost.

Do what’s best for you. My last laptop I bought with editing in mind. I thought it was spec’d pretty well at the time but it only ever did “okay” and now it can’t keep up with the newer cameras. It’s a few years old now. I wanted to upgrade the memory before buying something new but I didn’t want to waste money either. I always felt that laptop was loaded with too much bloatware that really drug the performance down.

Yeah, I get that and it makes sense. There are archery apps that dont work on mac thus I hve to keep a MS laptop to make sight tapes for my scopes...a lot of factors are in play so yes, again I get it. For me,...I HATE apple phones...but i love the shit out of their PC's. Its strange that the IOS is so locked down yet the Mac OS is so open.

I think I saw something that said every county in Texas is expecting snow. That’s crazy. Be safe down there. I know your infrastructure isn’t designed for that and the budget doesn’t exactly include proper treatment of snow and ice storms.
We have a major ice storm hitting back home so I’m a littler worried because I’m not there. I have a friend house and dog sitting for me. I’m hoping we don’t lose power because my generator setup is less than ideal. I’m in East Tennessee right now. Calling for mostly rain but it could freeze.

We have running water in every location except our master shower...we have cold water but no hot water, however, we do have hot water in both sinks in master bath...we have been running space heaters in that shower all day...nothing appears to be working.
There are 3 power plants off line so we are just crossing our fingers.

Thanks, we have our master sinks both on drips...one for cold and one for hot....but the shower still is not working. Just praying it doesn't burst...the pipes are in the slab so not sure I can do anything else at this point.

Went riding today and the GoPro’s were awful. The 9 was fine for most of the ride and then on the way back we took an awesome trail and the 9 just decided to turn itself off after 30 seconds so I missed the entire trail. Battery still had almost 60% when I got back so it wasn’t the battery.How cold is it out?
The 7 was mounted rear facing and just wanted to keep turning itself off. I have no idea what it captured yet. It seemed to freeze up a lot and nothing would work. I had to pull the battery to shut it down.

Thanks for asking Mike, its a real shit show man. I don't even know where to begin. At this point, we are just trying to minimze damange. Lost water for 72 hours...Well is also frozen and useless as back up. Gas pressure is super low and house temps are 60-65 but warmig up as pressure is coming back. No lose of power for us but everything around us is out...there is not gas, no LP, no water...stores are out of food...currently I can't get out of my drieway. My main door is frozen shut. That said, my truck is plugged i and it starts really fast. We don't get above freezing until mid day Sat at best. Mostly worried about pool and pool pumps. We also lost water in our master shower...we've had a heater in there for 6 days and just now getting a trickle out of it. Its very odd. Sorry to be scattered but we have one issue after another and sadly. my work really doesn't give a shit, I am booked solid on calls, its very frustrating. Also as City Council, I have received 200 emails+ from residents all asking for help yet there isn't anything I can do for them.
Very frustrating and stressfull. Yesterday morning, it was -6. NEVER have we seen this in Texas in my 30 years of leaving here.

Its a total mess down here. we are still out of water, but with our well back, I can at least fill toilets if needed. Its not filtered so I would prefer not to drink it.
I have been bouncing from City Hall to the house, handing out cases of water to our residents and working with FEMA who was a no show today. We have an army of residents with pick ups ready to off load the FEMA trailer so we can hand out to residents. They called about 20 min ago, said no go for today. The neighboring town just had Fort Worth tie into their water system so if they get their tanks full, they may release water back to us. But we'll still be under boil notice until a few days go by. Its flipping crazy man. Never seen anything like this and there are 254 counties in Texas, EVERY single one of them is declared a disaster. So I am on the Ham radio talking with EOC desk and working with the City to help coordinate relief efforts. I am totally exhausted. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers guys. Its not terrible but it has really shown me who's who in our town, some refuse to help and only want help and there are others who drop everything to help. Its disappointing but nice to see the help.

Yeah for sure, when I put my name in the hat for City Council and got elected in 2018, I made sure I had all my ARES and FEMA certifications so that I could provide EOC for the County as i knew my competitor couldn't even remotely come close to that feat. But I sure didn't think I would have to actually use it....ARES got activated on Tuesday so I have been providing EOC comms to and from the municipalities since then.

Jason, can you confirm this works with the new MacBook? I’m reading a lot of issues with these types of products with the new M1 macs. Some are bricking the MacBooks.My reader is standard USB. I have never taken files off of the GoPro this way before. It took FOREVER! It was a 70GB dump. Damnit, I just realized I need to dump the other GoPro too. Not sure what I was thinking. Trying to clear off the cards for my trip to Tennessee. I leave tomorrow morning.Apparently all the google searching in the world doesn’t tell you that before you hook the GoPro up, you need to turn the camera on and change the connection preferences to MTP. Then it worked.

It couldn’t keep up with certain trails I was on and got a little crazy. If it got bad enough it locked up and skipped and seemed to have to find its legs again. I have the GoPro mount for the dogs and it didn’t stand a chance at staying smooth. I’m going to have to try the Mac lense kod just out of curiosity.

Mike, yes that hub works and works really well man. It is expensive for what it is but it flipping works just fine on mine.Oh yeah. That. That was for transferring files from the GoPro to the MacBook since I didn’t have a card reader yet.

pulling the card is seriously the only way to go. You get the full speed of the USB C...the only limiting factor here is the read write speeds of your cards to your drive or mac HDD. I moved 75g in like 15 min. or less, don't recall.

You guys are getting as bad as CanadaOur specific area of the state is growing so fast. Cookie cutter houses, condos and million square foot warehouses are going up every time you turn around. A lot of the people living here do so because it’s a short commute to NYC and NJ which is even more expensive to live. We have the highest fuel tax in the country yet we rank the highest in most decrepit road and bridge infrastructure which is where all that money is supposed to be going. We visit Tennessee almost every year and it’s amazing how cheap it is down there. Their sales tax is higher than ours but everything Is cheaper. From vehicles to goods on the shelf, fuel, property taxes. I have 2 acres in a relatively cheaper county and it costs me $4,000 a year in property taxes. Cassie’s family in Tennessee has 3 acres and a bigger house and they pay $900. They justify all of this building up of the area by saying it will lower taxes and it never does. My little town I live in doesn’t even allow franchises like McDonalds and Burger Kings. Somehow a Subway snuck in. Yet they’re dredging up NY rivers and dumping the soil here in preparation for multiple warehouses right in the middle of one of the most picturesque areas. I realize I’m just venting now. That is all. Haha

Ah just the response I was hoping for wth your eagle eyes. Ok, what I didn't say about the 360 cam....i just got the lens guards for the 360 and you have to edit them differently. I do not like it at all. The stitching is very harsh. so here is what I am going to do, keep the lens guards but only use them if I put the camera in a harsh place like....under my seat. Other than that, I am going to take them off when I hve it on my helmet, its pretty safe up there from debris.
I still have the one GoPro boxed up ready to ship back...but hadn't talked with GoPro about keeping it. But the new chest harness from USWE is really nice. My buddy helmed me aim it and once I got it aimed, I took my pocket knife and notched a mark on the mount so I know where it goes now every time without the app.
Been reading that I am not the only one with that issue of connecting to the app...seems its a larger problem for GoPro and they have to address it.

I previewed some of my Tennessee footage which was the first time recording in 4k24. I was pretty impressed straight out of the camera. They’re basically remote controlled cars for the sky. I’m not a huge FPV drone person. It doesn’t fit my photography needs or the cinematic aspect I enjoy. To each their own. I respect what they can do for sure. I love remote control cars but I’m sure insanely destructive, I break all of them I touch, so I can only imagine I would enjoy the experience until I break it. Thanks for asking Mike, yes things are getting back to normal, Boil water was lifted on Wed of this week....just working on solving the broken stuff. We won't know the full extend of damage until we run our sprinklers....we have 22 Zones. I hope they are all ok. We have over 100 heads....so its kind of a pain in the ass. I spent months on our system when I moved it 4 years ago. Replaced every valve in the yard, and most of the heads. New project this year is to install hose bibs in line in several zones in the yard/. Also going to dig up where city water comes in to house and T the line and put in a double check valve inlet hose bib....so I can run a hose from the well to the house in case of no city water like we had.

From what I gathered, it was Netflix Sponsored and they have the the sharing rights. Outside of Netflix, this is a common format in the Mtn Biking filming industry though. They do a really good job on the visuals.

Even if they’re not developing products that suit my needs and desires I still can appreciate what they’re doing. Case in point, their new Insta360 Go 2. I have no use for it but it’s a neat little camera. Where DJI basically took the GoPro and put their own spin on it, Insta360 seems to go their own direction, for better or for worse. holy chitSo props to Insta for these even being comparable. I don’t think this is exactly apples to apples though. I’m not entirely surprised by the GoPro footage of him shaking the camera in the beginning. If I mount line to my dog, the stabilization has a tough time keeping up. I also noticed some pretty rough video out on some rougher trails. It has its limits. I just have a really hard time believing it was that far off. I don’t believe he has these cameras set up similarly. Some of the field of views seem off for the GoPro as well. They are far too narrow. The night shot for instance. None of these cameras are going to be amazing. It’s just not happening yet in action cameras and their small sensors. I also thought the GoPro has more detail. The colors might not look as realistic out of the box but that’s a very well known fact. GoPro’s color profile is super saturated. If you want more realistic you have to use custom settings.

While I like that Insta is innovative, I think the money behind DJI and the fact that they pretty much perfected their Osmo Action Cam means they will probably sneak in with something big for their second round. The Osmo Action is a knockoff of GoPro. They changed just enough to make it their own but didn’t do anything above or beyond or outside of the box. They established a customer base and proved their reliability so I think if they take it to the next level now they could really do some damage. They have the camera tech for sure. Some of the drone footage and images is insane. They have always relied on gimbals so if they can figure out a way to excel in stabilization and come up with something new that gets people excited, GoPro may finally be in trouble. I think Insta is a ways off yet. Even if not from a technological stand point but rather marketing and it’s customer base.

I think a 360 camera adds a degree of slope to even flat ground so I don’t buy in to this. What I did notice in the video was that he was using a Hero 8 when I know he has a Hero 9 and has compared them before. I wonder if it’s a stability issue with the 9. Being that it’s chest mounted I wouldn’t think it’s a weight thing.

Interesting. A guy I follow and respect on Facebook did a similar comparison between the Go2 and the 9 Black. It is closer than I thought. I can’t help but think though that the whole size thing probably has to do with the screens, the batteries and storage. Take all of that out and I think you’re left with a much smaller camera. I think GoPro could achieve the same thing, it just might freeze a bunch and not connect to your phone properly. Haha

Pretty interesting for sure. I love the idea of the size of the Go 2 for POV or even some "vantage" point shots, like under the rear of my bike seat. I'm just not too much into having two different brands of camera's. I don't like the built in battery or memory thought, but that might not even really be an issue.

I can honestly tell you that I two of those three on a pretty regular basis when I lived in Vancouver. Wild Cherry is beyond crazy and we went down it once to see what it was all about. I walked at least 2/3rds of it. The top helmet mount gives you a better perspective, however it really doesn't give you that good of an idea on how steep some of the sections are. You are literally scrapping your balls on the back tire to keep from going over the bars.

On a side note, I was just in the basement doing some work and had the Bluetooth speaker going listening to music. Stopped the music and left the speaker on when I went back upstairs. I could not for the life of me understand where that laugh was coming from as it sounded like it was in the house. It was the guy at the end of the video laughing, playing through the speaker. We just got home. 9 hours on the road pulling out TT. Construction through Oklahoma was 3 hours of delays. Why in the hell do they do that on holiday weekends?

I have yet to master this. It's pretty tricky and I really am still learning. I had to re edit this like 6 times and each move you want the camera to make to meet at a certain point is highly tricky....i was trying to avoid the helmet as much as possible but its still jacked up b/c you have to have the 360 camera perfectly level or you get the affect you see on this vid so I was trying to zoom in a little to avoid it but it was virtually impossible in some areas...like near the end when the two guys were high fiving ....I was turned away from them but I told the camera to pan back to capture that ....just tricky. But if I fooled your eyes then that is something b.c you rarely miss details.

I did notice the helmet at least once but I didn’t think much of it. Honestly it doesn’t bother me all that much. I thought the transitions were pretty smooth and the fish eye effect was minimal. That’s why it was so easy for me to watch. I am very susceptible to motion sickness. I honestly couldn’t watch the snow tubing videos you made. Not that they weren’t cool, I will just spend the next hour getting over it.
What editing software do you use? I think some are easier to use than others when it comes to 360. I’ve read good things about Premier and 360 but that’s an expensive program.

BTW, 1080 is all 360 will give you....if I take that mod off i can go 4K at 40 pfc.I know but I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t take a quick little shot at Ryan (or you, or Tom, or anyone else) when the opportunity presents itself. Haha.
I did notice the helmet at least once but I didn’t think much of it. Honestly it doesn’t bother me all that much. I thought the transitions were pretty smooth and the fish eye effect was minimal. That’s why it was so easy for me to watch. I am very susceptible to motion sickness. I honestly couldn’t watch the snow tubing videos you made. Not that they weren’t cool, I will just spend the next hour getting over it.
What editing software do you use? I think some are easier to use than others when it comes to 360. I’ve read good things about Premier and 360 but that’s an expensive program.

I love the Tiny Planet effect. I am using Insta's Mac App to edit the vides then I push them out, then import them to iMovie and make the videos. It adds complexity to the work flow but thats the only way to incorp them in to imove is to pre-edit thenm.

Ok, so you can post videos in 4K with a 360 camera.I saw that one. It basically takes the 360 concept and lays it flat. Basically like if you took a 360 degree panorama photo and squeezed it in to a traditional frame of view.
Here is how: Take a clip and don't edit it. Boom 4K

I was just watching a video, or I was dreaming, but I’m pretty sure you can export or upload to 4K lower grade footage. I think it was David Manning’s second video comparing the Go2 and the Hero9. He mentioned other vloggers or photographers doing that for years. I’m not sure what that does to the video though.

I haven't figured out how to upload an edited Free Capture video in 4K....it doesn't give me the option.I don’t know. I just know it’s possible. Go towards the end to the 16:00 mark and he mentions his own recent video where he filmed in 1440 and exported to 4K and also mentioned Matti Haapoja filmed in 1080 but exported to 4K. I don’t know the software being used and maybe it’s just not possible with edited 360 footage. I’m not sure at what point during the process they are exporting it to 4K. Is it the last step of editing or during the upload?
I will tinker around with it but i think it has something to do with file size.

Applied for my "Pilot's license", hop to have it in a couple of weeks.Sucks about the bag. Atleast it’s not something that will hold you back from flying. What pilots license? Part 107?

No! And not at all, totally a fair question. I did this bc. i have 2 shelves in this garage space...I just wanted some fun low key lights I could have on when i was tinkering. They are not meant to be a single source but it was 20 bucks and my buddy up in AR is a major fan of Berm Peak like I am , he did a special on led;s in the garage and I just kind of followed his lead. Totally took me like 20-25 min in total. I love it. it was fun and will be fun.

Laptop ordered. Went with a decent spec MSI laptop. It’s a gaming laptop that I can change the graphics drivers to be better suited to video editing. Hope to have it next week.My last laptop was an MSI. It was well spec’d and did what I needed it to do when I got it but wasn’t up for the challenge of the newer, higher bit rate, higher resolution videos and struggled to edit photos in Lightroom and photoshop. Of course this was a few years ago. My biggest complaint was always the bloatware that came on it. It had so much unnecessary stuff running on it, especially at start up.

New Computer showed up today. It's seems to be pretty quick, but will have to actually load some video. Changed the Graphics Driver from a gaming version to a Studio version and loaded up a few programs I'm going to need on it for various thing.Divinci resolve is super powerful. The downside, it’s also somewhat complicated. I feel like I need to reteach myself each time I use it.
Decided to try and start with Devinci resolve. Hopefully I can get a little bit of random footage this weekend to try and cut up a bit.

Did the latest FW update on my GP 9. Touch screen is way better for responsiveness now.Good to know because they’ve been awful. But I also complain about my iPhone so maybe some of that is just me. My finger tips are usually so messed up from work that they don’t also register on screens and my pixel couldn’t read my finger print half the time because they were partially missing at most times. Haha

Kind of dreading this "switch" to Iphone
Its a long story but the fact taht my brand new S20FE is already a brick, Samsung couldn't care less, spent the better part of a day running around Dallas to repair facilities that they told me to go to all to find out, no field shop can fix the phone, has to go back to samsung but I wold be out a phone for 3 weeks. They would not hot swap one for me. So pissed that I called my ATT city rep, she got 2 iphones for 300 bucks each and they arrive today. Based on how Samsung treated me, I probably will never buy another samsung product.

But typing for me is much better on the iphone. The screen everyone talkes about on this new 12 Pro is said to be the best ever but it's nothing compaired to a samsung screen from like 3 years ago. Samsungs screens are just magical. I don't think the camera on the iphones are as good as samsungs either.

I don’t have a problem with the keyboard itself. But when I screw up a letter mid word, I can never get the cursor to go to that letter to delete it. Half the time I can even get the cursor on that line of text again. And sometimes I have to touch the screen multiple times to select things. Somewhere along the line Apple made a change to that feature. If you just hold your finger in one spot for a second and then slide it around, you'll see where the cursor will end up. It no longer directly under your finger, it's kinda up and to the left a little of where you actually touch.Ok so you’re officially my hero. That worked perfect. That drove me nuts. It still won’t help with the accuracy of tapping in certain areas but that will certainly save me sanity.

So knowing nothing about the sport, I started making a crack about the spring weather having the money tree on full bloom. Then I started looking at it. It looks a lot more basic than other bikes. Is that just how a jump bike is? Am I right in looking at this and saying it’s a single speed, rear brake only, hard tail?Money Tree has been picked over already. I did have a good QTR and I am covering 2 regions so I am getting paid on all the deals I am touching which is double...so yes the pay out is also double with a catch...they capped me somewhat. That said, yes I did buy a very expensive Pivot bike recently and yes I did just roll in the shop and buy this bike, not as a flex by any means but I am staring to migrate back to my roots as a kid. I love to park ride and doing it on a full squish isn't ideal. I wanted a play bike that was light, strong and capable. Jump bikes only have 1 brake. They are designed to play on big jumps....bowls, jump lines etc. They are fixed and single speed. That all said, it's a really dumb purchase. But they are so much fun and both myself and my son and ride it so its a win win. I wanted it for skills parks, and pump tracks. And to keep on the camper to run around.

Nonsense? Or BS? Yeah for the first time in a long time,(i mean several jobs prior) this company is doing right by pay. I am covering 2 territories. Basecially i cover 22 sales reps in 19 countries. They are paying me on every deal I touch in both regions which is normallly a no no but we don't have anyone covering them and my boss can't doe it with out me so they are paying me. This gravy train ends soon but I have one more month of decent pay then I am back to just my region which is the Central US now. They moved me out of the East which sucks bc I liked traveling to the East coast. ie My folks Live just south of tampa so it was easy to "travel for work" and stay over a weekend and have my company pay for my flights. That ended so it sucks. As for the jump bike, I really want to to hit some parks with it but we are limited so thus I have to take it with me when I travel to ride. Up in NWA the new Meca for mt biking in the Lower 48, there are no less than 5 jump parks within 10 min from each other. So yes, that is going to be fun.

I love to park ride and doing it on a full squish isn't ideal. I wanted a play bike that was light, strong and capable. Jump bikes only have 1 brake. They are designed to play on big jumps....bowls, jump lines etc. They are fixed and single speed. That all said, it's a really dumb purchase. But they are so much fun and both myself and my son and ride it so its a win win. I wanted it for skills parks, and pump tracks. And to keep on the camper to run around.

Ah yes, good call out on that. I have pondered this issue many time.
That said, I am reading the book "The YouTube Formula" it is totally fascinating. Granted I am only half way through it, what I am learning is how to use the algorithms. It states that you must have these 3 key elements: 1. An amazing Thumbnail. 2. Amazing content. and 3. Amazing editing. Obviously I have none of those three at present. I watched a private vid from a major youtuber and he explains that he spends as much or more time working on this thunmbnails as he does on his content and editing. As for the voice overs. Yes this is something I have looked in to. We really need an intro. and 10-15 second in your face, attention grabbing clip...then the video. And yes, I do need to get better at talking directly to the camera after rides to complete the "experience".. But again, good call out and thank you for that feedback.

there were 3 ladies on that ride. 2 are retired Pro Mt Bikers and 1 is a retired pro endurance athlete. They are in their lowers 50's now but still are very capable riders. I like this little group b.c they are safe and totally predictable yet super fast and strong as shit. Cllmbing is something we have to do down here in the south...even in hilly areas like AR where I grew up mt biking. Climbing is a a thing you either get and do well or mt biking may not be your sport. LOL.
The local guys I ride with just don't understand climbing...they do it so wrong. LOL.

Tried to get some drone footage today, but it was a total bust. Too many trees where we were trying to shoot and my batteries were only 75% charged for some reason.The batteries are smart batteries and will begin to discharge on their own after sitting for some time. I’d fly it at 75% honestly. I’d just be a little more cautious of wind and distance. The trees are what they are though. Can’t do much about that.

Ok, that make sense for sure. I still did do some flying, but only threw one spare in my backpack. I think right after take off the batteries only had like 13 minutes of flight time. The beeping is so annoying. Mine would trigger at 30%. So if I was flying relatively close already I would leave it in the air but I couldn’t cancel the beeping or even quiet it.

I’m not sure if it’s just on my end but it was fairly grainy video. YouTube said it was 1080 though so I don’t know. Maybe I just have a poor connection currently. I will say though that the image stabilization was working over time. Horizon stayed really level and even side to side, as the GoPro tries to smooth it out and play catch up and recenter itself in the frame, it looked like you were heading right for trees. Was freaking me out a bit. My mind goes to off-roading in the sxs and I see clipped tires and broken tie rods. Haha.

You are 100% correct, looks grainy on Youtube. I tried rendering in 1080p MP4 and I guess that was a bad idea. The vid on my laptop does look much better, but still not great.
Raw footage on the GP was 2.7k and 4k on the Drone.
Maybe I'll try a custom output or even Quicktime @1080 to see what it looks like.

Looks like I made a couple of mistakes. The Drone footage is 25fps, but my timeline was set for 30, so the drone footage is choppy not matter what.
I did a .mov export and it looks MUCH cleaner on my laptop, but still not great on Youtube. Let me know what you think.

It might help to use the histogram as a base to make sure nothing is blown out or too under exposed. But it’s easier to bring the shadows out than it is to recover the highlights.

I grabbed a basic filter kit and have to play with it. I've never done filters before, so I think this will be interesting.It’s almost a guess at which to use. Takes practice to know what filter to run to get your shutter speed right. If you test fit one on the ground in a shady area and take the drone up and the Sunnis blaring, you’ll find it’s not the right one. Pain in the ass but worth it if you can dial it in.

Yup, you can’t get even a decent sense of how steep some of those trails are and the 2+foot drops look like you’ve just rode over a little root on the trail, lol.One thing I really like about all this new image stabilization is it takes out all of the jitteriness and vibrations. For motorsports, it’s great because just idle vibrations would send the old GoPro’s so far out of wack it was almost unusable. But now at the same time, when cruising down a trail, you don’t get any of that sense of harshness that you feel in the moment. Horizon lock brings its own downsides. I love horizon lock for being able to really focus on things visually and take in the scenes but when you look at it from POV you don’t get any of that off camber feel that gets your blood pumping when you’re out there. What I noticed with my old hero 7, which was the first major leap in stabilization, was when mounted to my cage, the cage would be moving in the field of view almost like someone was holding the camera and it wasn’t fixed to the cage. That was the image stabilization going to work but I thought it was cool because it did give me some of that feeling back. So I guess one method would be to have an angle that shows some of the subject in the foreground because the stabilization is going to have that moving all around the field of view.
I dusted off a old iPad mini and bought a remote mount for it. Just need the longer cable. Hopefully it will make it easier to see what’s going on when flying

Either of you play with LUT's? I can see what looks to be some pretty nice ones to work with, instead of always trying to do color grading manually afterwards. I know I'm getting way ahead of myself, but may buy a cheaper set to play with on some footage while on VacayNever used them. I usually color grade a clip and then copy that color grading and apply it to all other clips that are similar. If the scene is drastically different then I will color grade that one and likewise apply it to other clips that are similar.

I just haven't put out anything in a couple months...been so totally buried with work.
Regarding the Insta...i still love it. It adds time to work flow but I love how I can control it. For me its not a gimmick, I think we are going to use it more but for the right content.
I think in some ways it can be better than a GP but i haven't been paying attention, to what GP is doing, I am still kind of pissed at them... but their shit is solid when it works.

While and I wasn’t prepared to reteach myself how to use it. I figured iMovie was probably fairly simple. Which it is, but it’s also not very good.
