Title: 2015 X5 Diesel
Post by: Blown F-150 on July 30, 2019, 12:07:53 AM
I haven’t done much yet. Just a wash and spray and rinse on the wheels.

If you look at it in the right light, there are some faint holograms, so it’s been corrected in the past. It needs some love and time for sure.

Wheels before

Wheels after

Backsides of the wheels still need some serious attention.

Proper detail pics to come once I can get to it. I need to prep it for 3M film on the front clip.

I like it!  I've always liked the X5s and it's one of the few vehicles that I think knocks it out of the park without question everytime they update it.  They never need to grow on me.  The diesel intrigues me.  I've only ever driven 3/4 ton and bigger diesels.

Heather really likes it. She wanted to hold out for the new Explorer, but this one came in on trade and was a great price.

The diesel is really peppy, I'm actually impressed. I'll get up a 0-60 vid.

I need to carve out time to detail it, so much going on with work and prepping for #2 (who is now 4 days overdue).

I'm thinking you might want to detail it before #2 arrives. Once he or she arrives, you won't have time for anything!

BTW, sweet looking ride!

So finally got around to a basic detail on this thing. It’s really a clean up to either trade it in or sell privately. My cousin had a 2021 Explorer ST hit the lot in the right color with the right package, so we are going to look at it on Friday and see if we can make a deal.

Potential new whip
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210310/551ccf679923d65a23365691c67b6b0d.jpg)

On the X5 I spent most of the time on the interior. But on the outside it got a waterless wash, clay (tons of tar came off), M101 with a orange pad (one pretty quick pass) and poor boys ceramic coating.

I gotta say that I will order some more of the ceramic coating to try on the truck and see how it holds up. It was really nice to apply and left a nice slick feeling.

Couple afters. Pretty rushed, so no befores. The paint is not in great shape on this thing.

Looks pretty good to me!

So BMW is supposed to be a little more upscale, prestigious, a little more higher class.  But I see you’re considering going to a Ford.  My future sister in law has an X5, and while she is not a car person, she’s not hugely impressed or in love with hers.  I think they look nice.  They have power.  How do you feel about the X5 overall?

Overall we really like it. My wife would be happier though if it was one year newer and had a touch screen, instead of just the dial. It rides really well and is phenomenal on fuel, like crazy good (but it is a diesel).

Is has some nice features like blinds for the rear windows and the back seat is roomy too. Service intervals are 13,000kms and I have only had to put DEF in it once in 2 years.

We would never spend the money on a new one, but they are just over priced new and depreciate A LOT in the first 3-4 years. A new equivalent of ours is over $120k.

We liked the new explorer when it came out and now seems to be a good time to look at one. It has every feature the X5 has with a larger Infotainment screen and has more room. It will be harder on gas and harder to fit in the garage though...

How many miles (or Kilometers if you must, haha) in that two years?  The diesel to DEF ratio is about 50:1 or 2% DEF.  That seems accurate to me based on rough numbers I did in my head of the average work week.  My work truck takes 2.5 gallons almost every week and a half or so.

Any other pointers, I have not had a chance to clean up the front clip of the NAv and try it.
- I have to grind down what it on there..

The MKZ got an OPT glosscoat applied to it last year ( APR-2020 ) but it only has ~ 2,000 miles on it since that time.

It seemed to have a decent work time before flashing (garage was about 68 degrees).

I went a little heavier on the application than opti-coat 2.0, but that was just a personal preference.

That would be cool if the front badges can be removed all together.
- I cannot tell, reading it seems the hood does not have locating holes..

Black lug nuts, Custom Black emblems and “ST” wheel center caps ordered.

I made a deal with the PPF guy, I’ll remove the explorer badge on the hood, prep and coat the paint and he’ll put PPF on the entire hood and fenders for the price of just the leading edge.

I was hoping to see you go another direction and get away from some of the black.  I do realize I’m in the minority when it comes to black but I just don’t care for black wheels and blacking things out.  I’ve been pleasantly surprised before though.  And I guess if you’re staying with black wheels then black lug nuts are a must.

Although I get what you’re saying, It would be a pretty large effort to take it another way. One of the reasons we sent with this model was the lack of chrome.

The chrome Ford badges just don’t make any sense in my opinion. It’s just Ford being stubborn about branding. I thought about blue and black for the badges, however I did that with my truck and it’s weird enough having two blue vehicles, lol.

The lug nuts are the same thing IMO, just doesn’t make sense as to why they are chrome. It also bugs me that they went to the effort of having black housing head lights, but the fog lights are chrome housings.  I’m looking into options to swap the fogs.

Looks like there is a lot that can be changed with ForScan, so I’m seeing what I can do there.

Are the fog lights the rectangular, horizontal lights you see in the picture?  I thought those might be turn signals.  Is the whole housing chrome or just the reflector?

If they are like the MKZ ones, it is a reflector in there.,
(https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/oq4AAOSwb~xeOYqn/s-l1600.jpg)

There might be some chrome trim around the light housing, but that is an easy fix with some 3M body film ( matte version ); but the reflector is still going to be chrome.

I am sure you can, if you don't want light output.

That’s what I was thinking.  I’m not sure what they’re painting in there.  Looks to be mostly reflector to project the light out similar to a light bar.  I’d be curious if they’re painting anything besides that, what it looks like and if it’s be worth the trouble of separating them.  I have vowed never to open up another light again after dealing with Cassie’s WRX.  F that!

Light output would be affected, no two way's about it, if I did tint. I was thinking about doing them in amber as well, something to mask the chrome.
Probably just going to leave it unless someone makes a set the mimics the black housings of the headlights.

Looking at summer wheels, so the stockers can be delegated to winter wheels. I'm having a hard time liking anything. I don't want black, Bronze would be a copy of the truck and not much else color wise seems to flow with the look. Maybe a dark gray?

I immediately thought bronze.  You do risk being similar to the truck but really that’s not a bad thing.  The truck looks great.  Who cares.  I’ve never been a fan of being different for the sake of being different.

You say amber but do you really mean 3k yellow?  I love amber running lights and I’m not a fan of clear/white running and marker lights but fogs should always stay functional.

Fine, twist my arm! I’ll look at Bronze and Dark Grey. I just can’t do Black or Black Chrome.

If I had a whole fleet of blue vehicles, they would probs let all have bronze wheels.  Haha.  I don’t care.  You could always go with something fully custom through powder coating or something.  Something that’s not an off the shelf color.  Sometimes that ends up being tacky though.  We all know from your past that you have an unlimited wheel budget so I’m sure you could come up with something cool.  Haha

Looks yellow to me.  Mimicked 3k fog light temperature.  I like it.

That could be a film on the outside of the lens ??

You can make the decision to try something more orange or go amber film ( closer to a 2.9K to 3K color temp range ) and do multiple layers if you want more orange color.

You can do it on the outside for sure. I’m just thinking with road debris will eat up the film around here.

Got the ST in our possession today. So far pretty happy with it. Definitely a few things that need changing in ForScan. Hopefully I can tackle them on the weekend. Black lugs are here, so I'll swap them out as well.

I told my cousin that I didn't want them to wash or prep the car for pick-up, so I have some cleaning to do before I can get it to the shop for PPF and tint.

I'll probably just start a new thread for it.
