ATV info request
« on: June 30, 2008, 05:17:33 PM »
Looking to buy a used ATV in the very near future.  I've ridden some friends so general operation is known.

Now, shower me with information on maintenance, online stores for gear, tips, tricks, mods, etc...

What is your price range gonna be? What are you gonna do with it? I've personally got 2 Honda Ranchers that have been really nice and reliable.

Will be some trailriding in the summer.  Will be taking it camping but that will be in the truck to a OHV park or two.  It will be used for getting me to the dove hunting spots and I'll be hunting pheasant from the atv itself (leagal in TX).  Hunting will be prarie grass and cut corn and/or wheat.  No woods or hills to speak of.

I'm not really tall but ample in size 260lbs so it'll have to be big enough to yank me around.  however trying to stay small enough that it'll fit in the truck without taking my toolbox out.  I know that anything will be riding on the tailgate.  As far as measuring it's looking like max will be about a 400.
As far as price I'm probably going to be looking at used.  I don't want to finance anything so out the door budget is right at $4,000.

Hoping for a 4x4 but starting to think that I might can get away with a 2x4.
It will need to be a utility type with racks.

I looked at a couple small newer atv's but not sure I want to go that route.  I've never been one to buy new even with trucks.  looked at Honda fourtrax recon 250 and a suzuki ozark 250.  Hit's close to price range but dang they're awfully small.

IMO the 250 class ATVs are too small. You shouldn't have trouble finding a nice used Rancher for $4k. If you can swing it, find an '07 model. The engine is 420cc rather than 330cc, and it's fuel injected.

Keep in mind there are different models within the Rancher line. You can get them 2wd or 4wd, with or without ESP, and even with GPS. I think you should be able to find a nice used '07 Rancher 4wd manual shift for ~$4k.

I'd definitely get a 4wd, you never know when you'll need it.

Well, found a bike.  Going to pick it up Thursday once the funds are available from the boat's sale.

It's a Blue 2004 Polaris Sportsman 400 4x4.  1000 miles on it.  Seems to be in good shape.  Everything is tight, shifts well, runs/idles well, adult ridden.  Throwing in an aluminum ramp, extra tranny belt, set of jets for high altitude as well as the jets that are in it for this altitude.  $3350.  Which will leave plenty for all the oher stuff I'm going to want/need.

Very nice.

Sad to say it, but mine isn't nearly that clean. It's hard to keep it clean when it gets used around here as much as it does.

Sweet... you'll be glad you got the 4X4.  I have a new Sportsman 500 HO, and it's the most fun you can have sitting down (well... the second most fun thing  ;D )
