advice on a new lawn tractor
« on: November 14, 2008, 11:29:15 AM »
Need a new mower. Dont need a garden tractor- only using it to mow grass (about 3/4 acre)

Reading lots of bad reviews on Deere and Cub Cadets. Anyone have any recommendations?

I love my Deere. That is until one of my mom's step children decided to run over some rocks and sticks and snapped the self-propel belt and somehow locked up one of the rear tires.

It's always been a good mower, well worth the 450$ price tag. Definitely does a better job than any cheaper brand I've had.

You bought a new Deere rider for $450?

I grew up mowing on a Deer 655, diesel with front loader and PTO.  Had large cut area under tractor...they are as good as they get.  I had to move 12 acres each week.  Took HOURS.

Thanks for visiting the Cafe, come back often.  There's always something new!

my problem is- its late in the season- most of what is out there is clearance priced. The Deere dealership hasnt got lawn tractors in stock- they do have garden tractors ($$$$).
The big box stores- Depot and Lowes still have some but those are the models that are getting BAD reviews

It's not a rider. It was the top-of-the-line push/self-propelled model about 3 years ago

The Deere and Cub Cadet mowers at the big box stores aren't really Deere or Cub Cadets. You have to go to a dealer to get a real one.

My parents bought a Cub at Lowes and lets just say it sucks. The wheels use plastic bushings rather than bearings. After only a years use they had to buy new wheels AND spindles.

The Deere walk behinds are nice, but the top of the line is a Honda.

walk behind exmark is the best mower period....not the little entry level ones, the 32" deck and up metros...they start at $3200, but it would be the last mower you would buy.

http://www.exmark.com/Metro.htm

the mower i have is a rider and love it...its a husq sweedish rider 155....three blade with deck infront, this allows you to get up under shrubs, it is a virtual zero turn, but only one tranny not two to have to service, the frame is a trellis style tubular steel not a pressed stamped sheet metal.  the rear wheels trun....

the new model is now the rider 175
