Looking for a good camera
« on: November 02, 2008, 09:57:12 PM »
I have a pretty good knowledge of SLR cameras from taking photography classes but i've never used a digitial one. I'm looking for something that can capture close up detail, but be versatile as well. I'm guessing it being digitial doesn't have anything to do with the lense type right?

I'm hoping for something decent around 500. Maybe asking for it as a christmas present. Anyone know of any good price websites i can look on?

RR i know this is your area. Help me out!

Well since you asked, I will give you my opinion...you don't need an SLR to take close ups.  Just run out and get a Canon point and shoot.

I am out of the SLR advice business, I am old school and I am 10000% Canon.    I do know that RockPick recently bought a new Nikon SLR he he loves it.

I haven't looked at DSLR's as of late but I would still go with Canon but it's b/c that is where my investment is.  All my lens are Canon or Maymia.

I did just get the new CR mag and it said that the Canon SD1100 IS ELF was a best buy at 200 bucks.  I have an 850 and an 800, and a 750 and they are all GREAT little cameras.

Only the Nikon D40 is around 500 bucks in the DSLR...

I will shoot with a Canon 10D and 20D but only in the studio, I take ALL my detail photos with my Canon point and shoot SD850.

RR, know of any solid performing Canons in the $200~ range that are NOT compact, and therefor may perform slightly better? I noticed in some reviews of that suggested camera that it has issues with quality in poor lighting- a situation common to me when detailing in a garage or at night. They mentioned it being due to tiny sensors found in compact cameras.

I'm totally fine with a fist-filling PAS camera if the quality is better.

I know I don't need an SLR but i've always wanted another one. I have a kodak c743 point and shoot that works great.

Is that Nikon d40 even worth looking at? How about the cannon esos Rebel?

That g10 looks interesting as well

I use the Canon EOS Rebel for about the last 6 months. All of my detailing pics have in that time have been taken on it. I'm no expert photographer by any means, but I don't have any problems capturing defects with it. And it can be had for under $500.

best bang for the buck would be a rebel for sure.

I bought a Rebel in March, and love it ..  I had been looking at several DSLR's, and I was walking through Office Depot, and they had an unadvertised store special on the EOS Rebel 10.1 for $450

you can find them online for right at $500

I bought it, and love it.  takes great pics, even in the point and click mode.

I've been looking into a DSLR myself.  Been trying to do some research here and there.  It's a bit overwhelming though when you know basically nothing about cameras outside of point and shoot.  It's like learning to speak another language.  I really want a camera that takes good pictures in low light.  More realistic to the environment I guess you could say.  I don't want the flash to artifically light up a room to the point where it looks like daytime but when the flash is off have it get blurry or too dark.  More natural looking is what I'm after.  Impossible without spending a fortune?

Got a Canon S3 IS...  Love it.  Absolutely does everything I need it to do, and more.  Took tons of pics (~2k!!!) back in Jan. when I took the family to Disney.  Quality was better than expected...  even while on the wildlife ride, I took pics at full zoom, while moving, and they came out crystal clear!

I guess I'm the oddball. I'm a Nikon fan myself for SLR. I have a D40 that I don't really use much. It's great if I plan to go somewhere to take some cool scenary shots, or do an outside vehicle photoshoot with good light. I find it's pretty weak at anything less than optimum light without some pretty uber lighting equipment. The 6MP is a major downside as well considering most point and shoots out there are that much or more. Hell, cell phones are up to 3 and 4MP.

Sad... I bought my D40 when I was in 10th grade (04,) for over 1000$.... WITH my employee discount at Best Buy.

For P-S I'd definitely buy Canon. Sony has some nice ones but memory sticks tend to be pricier than SD. I can attest to JP's ps camera being nice. All the photos he took from doing my truck way back when are better than anything I can get with the D40.

I picked up the Canon Rebel xs last weekend. I got the camera, EF-S 18-55mm, 75-300mm lense, 2gb extreme highspeed card, All for about $700. They gave me a free printer, classes, paper, a couple programs and some other stuff.

I got it mainly to start some credit man is this camera cool or what. I really like the stabilizing lense.. I'm used to using a tripod to get it steady.
