Is the cx3 a variable speed version?  The 'c' is just an 'on or off' type (with adjustable speed).  I'd assume that the variable speed would be trigger-sensative up to the set speed on the dial.

Not totally sure but that's my stab in the dark...

Maybe give Makita a call?  (714) 522-8088

i did not know that this machine came in two models one with a on/off switch and varible speed...i only have seen the one varible speed trigger...this is the one i have (varible speed trigger).  yes it can spin as slow as you want  i guess as slow as 1 rpm and then once you fully pull the trigger it will go up to the limited speed as set on the thumb rotary dial....say like #1 speed set is 800 rpms....pull the trigger part way and very slow speed to spread product around.  once its spread and is starting to work then you can kick it up pulling the trigger all the way and not have to worry about spinning the product too fast with the speed limiter....and another thing about the thumb max speed setting, it is varible too...if you want 1.5 not quite a 2 but more that a 1 you got it....i had a dewalt for years, until it was stolen from the garage...i got the makita because i like the d handle, easyer to hold and go from left to right handed without having to pull the screw in stick handle like on the dewalt.  the dewalt handle also sticks out a bit much, good for leverage and to keep the machine nice and steady, but a bit long and cumbersome in tighter spots.

Yep, CX3 is the same machine, but it comes with a polishing kit.

(Found that on their site)
