2006 A4 hood cleanup
« on: July 18, 2016, 01:44:30 PM »
So while I was in the middle of the ML detail a buddy came by with his A4.
He chased a cat off of his hood and it left some marring on it's exit. He also did a really bad job with some touch up paint. Way too much of it and it is the wrong color.

He was pretty impressed with how the hood came out, so I'll be doing the rest of the car next month.

Sorry, I totally forgot to get some befores.
 - We gave it a ONR wash (he just washed it)
 - Clay with Opti Clay
 - 2000grit Wet sanded and leveled the touch up paint
 - M101 on a orange Super Buff pad (medium cut 5")
 - M205 on a green Super Buff pad (Finish cut 5")
 - LSP was Auto Glym resin polish (his choice)

Afters

You can see the remnants of the scratch in the left light and the paint chips in the right light

Cool color!  Hood looks sharp!  Nice work.

That looks great, I am too scared to treat paint chips the proper way.

Thanks for visiting the Cafe, come back often.  There's always something new!

Thanks guys!

I used my "durablock" to keep my sandpaper as flat as possible and keeping the sanding to just the high spots of touch up paint. It was time consuming, but I didn't prep any pencil erasers and should have.

He was a happy camper, so when I get back from vacay, we'll try and set something up.

The touch up paint that was inadvertently applied to ( now ) mom's convertible, I just used cutting pads and compound to remove.
- I trashed a MF cutting pad in the process; only using it in that area.

It was built up pretty good in the scratches and full of dirt and crap from not being leveled or cleared over.
- I also do not know what brand touch up it was or what the enviroment & prep was like when it was applied.

I singled out a spot and tried the medium cut pad and the M101. I was surprised at how hard the Audi touch-up paint was. I then made the call to pull out the sand paper. it was still time consuming as I didn't want to really hit the original clear much, but I didn't seem to make much progress with just the pad and compound.

I should have tried out a cutting MF pad, but didn't even think about it.
