PC Guys - In need of new lap top
« on: February 28, 2016, 10:39:00 AM »
My last laptop bit the dust.  I may still have it looked at and if itsnchesp enough to fix, I'll give it to my girlfriend.  I never really liked it much, anyway.  It's main function is going to be to occasionally edit video.  So basically a budget video editting laptop.  Otherwise it will just store pictures and music.

I've narrowed it down to these two as of right now.

Very similar machines.  The Asus has 16gb of higher speed RAM but its the newer DDR4 which I'm not reading fantastic things about right now.  The Dell has the same dedicated graphics card but its a 4gb as opposed to Asus 2gb.  But again, I'm reading the 4gb is worthless on this model GPU.  Everything else seems equal enough.  USB ports, drive space, full hd screens, same processor, etc.  So I'm thinking I'd benefit more from the memory.

Any advice or other options?  I realize neither are a power house but I'm not looking for that.

I'll give you a hell of a deal on my Radio Shack TRS-80 if you want. I'll even sweeten the deal by offering to throw in my Maxwell Smart shoe phone!  :funny:

I'll keep that in mind if both of these sell out, Tom.

Just my .02 on this but I have had VERY good luck with Factory ReFurbs at a fraction of the price.  I would NEVER pay that much for a MS OS machine.

If you want video editing...why not get a Mac?

Macs are way too expensive.  And I have no issues with factory refurbs.  That's where my search started.  I just have no idea what's good and what's not.  I'm tired of looking every part number up and trying to compare them.

Agreed but they are worth every penny.    Again, just my .02.

That said, I have 3 Dell ReFurbs that I got off of Woot & Yugster that have been pretty bad ass for what they are used for.  One only makes Archery Sight Tapes and my wife uses one for her work and daughter uses hers for homework.

I agree it would be worth every penny if I planned to use it to do a lot of videos.  But it will only be once in a while.  I've been tempted though.  I saw some older refurbed ones with a quad core I5 but was really hoping for a quad core I7.

Eh, I hate this.  I'll shop for anything else... I hate shopping for computers.

If you want to look at off lease equip, I have had good luck with Arrow ( dist-d at my last place ).

they sell Dell, Aser and Macs ( and others ) off lease.

http://arrowdirect.com/

They usually send out specials in the emails.
I got my Lenovo X220s from them for work.
- These are for VMWare ESXi and Win 2008 servers ( and a work laptop running VMWare workstation ), I don't know if they do graphics worth a damn.

I don't know how much power you need for video editing, but have you thought about a desktop for that ?

I got a HP vw8600 for the ESXi server at the house ( lab ), it has 2  Xeon quad-core processors and 64GB ram from a leasing company in MI ( eBay store ).  It was 700 or 750 ( got it 2 years ago ).  they come with NVIDIA graphics cards ( they were designed to be for editing bays at pixar way back when ).

I changed out the drive right out of the gate to a SSD for booting the VMWare OS and 2 1 TB drives for the storage.

Sorry, stupid question time from me, I have no idea what is required for video editing, and since they were designed 8 - 10 years ago for the likes of Pixar, I figure they might still get the job done for you today.

A desktop would be much easier and I could just piece it together but I want it to be mobile.  Not so much for the video editing aspect but just to have a mobile machine.  And I plan to only have one machine until I have a house.

Suck it up and get a MacBook Pro.  you'll love it and wonder why you waited so long to do it.
