Tony another point, there is no difference in engine strategy in a 3/4 vs a 1 ton.   If you went to a 450 Ford does change the strategy a tad on the higher side along with longer front axles and beefed up rear end.

Thanks for visiting the Cafe, come back often.  There's always something new!

Ok, gonna derail this thread for a second.  What's the deal with the 450s and 550s being underpowered compared to their lesser siblings?

Just FYI in some states you need a Class A CDL to tow a trailer with a F450/550 because of the gvcw. As far as them being underpowered they just plain heavy I think our old 2wd F550 with a 7.3 weighed in at 10,000lb with a 12ft dump bed on it.

While at the dealer I was flipping through the chassis cab book and the specs for the 450 and 550 were significantly lower than the 250 and 350 as far as power.  I'll see if I can find the numbers.

Edit:
Maybe it's just the chassis cabs as the pick ups came back with the usual numbers when I googled but the chassis cabs I found this... http://m.ford.com/commercial-trucks/chassis-cab/trim/details/equipment.html/f550xl/_stdpart_37172 For those who don't feel like looking, it has the 550 rated at 300hp and 660lbft.

Mike, the only reason I can think of is because it's a commercial vehicle. Other than that I don't have a clue.

Yeah huge difference.  Especially on the torque end.  If I had a commercial truck I would want that power back.  I wonder if it's something that is tuneable. I remember when the corvette zr1and Caddy ctsv shared a motor, a big part of the power difference was tuning.

Cummins, Detroit, and International have specific tuning for ambulances and fire trucks so I'm sure there is some room to play. I'm glad our trucks are tuned the way they are I can't imagine what the repair bills would be like if our trucks were tuned to put out more horsepower.
