Paint Color & Detailing
« on: December 19, 2014, 07:46:30 PM »
Things have been a little slow around here lately. Apparently everyone is busy getting ready for something called “the holidays” – whatever that is. So I thought I’d liven things up a bit with a post on paint color and how it relates to detailing.

So we all know some colors are a royal pain to get to pop. Other colors look like they’re dripping off the car – with the same amount of time and effort as the ones that didn’t pop. Several colors are perfect for folks who never wash or otherwise take care of their paint. One color in particular is a royal paint to get pictures of – even after you’ve made it look like it’s dripping off the car. Get my drift?

So here are the categories I’d like to get everyone’s feedback on. Feel free to add anything I’ve left out!

Color(s) that look the best after detailing

Color(s) that just don’t look that much better – even after detailing

Color(s) that are almost impossible to get good pictures of

Color(s) that are most forgiving in normal wear & tear

Color(s) that you love to hate

I think I would put Silver in here.

I could just about drive my '01 through a mud puddle and it would still look clean.

Unless the lighting is great, I would say Silver is also hard to get a good picture of.
- It shows the lights and the reflection, and little for the paint itself.

OK, time for my thoughts:

Color(s) that look the best after detailing: Red, Black, Red / Orange / Copper or other dark metallics

Color(s) that just don’t look that much better – even after detailing: Silver & Gold

Color(s) that are almost impossible to get good pictures of: White, any non-metallic pastels

Color(s) that are most forgiving in normal wear & tear: White, Silver, Gold

Color(s) that you love to hate: Black, Blue and most other dark colors (They show every spec of dust - immediately.)

Few colors have impressed me like Jason's truck when all done up right.  That dark copper just has it all.  Metallic, depth and reflection.  His just doesn't have any overcoat anymore.  Haha

Silver... You'd have to give me a silver car in order for me to own one.  Grabber blue as well.  See next category.

Color(s) that are almost impossible to get good pictures of
I keep going back to grabber blue.  I guess that would be a pastel blue like Tom mentioned.  Its almost completely opposite of dark copper.  No metallic.  No depth.  And no reflection.  Silver also.

Color(s) that are most forgiving in normal wear & tear
Silver?  Does it ever look clean or dirty?  Its the most blah of all colors.

Color(s) that you love to hate

How about hate to love?  Red?  Hate the color but looks dripping wet when detailed right.  Black?  Fricken dust magnet and magnifier.

Yup, I've got to agree with you. Silver is a PITA. And I swore I'd never own a silver vehicle.  :dunno:

This shot was taken after the mud bogs and I hadn't touched the car with the Flex in 8 months ...

Ok, Tom.  Show off...

Ok I'm going to classify that as grey for two reasons.
 1.  I want to.  Otherwise it disproves my theory of silver.

2. It's actually a bit darker than the silver I had in mind.

😝

Oh it's silver all right. "Silver Cloud" according to Toyota. And as many bad things as both of us can say about it, I have to admit it's growing on me.  I still doubt I'd buy a new car and actually order it though. (Remember, I bought this one used.)

Now if you really want to see silver (or maybe grey), you should see my hair.  :om:

What does Toyota know?
