Poll : Rupes LHR 15E Washer or no Washer
« on: December 16, 2014, 07:42:01 PM »
OK, I fell for the marketing material again, and ordered one of these.

The question I have of those who own them, Washer mod or No Washer Mod ?

I keep looking at it, and wonder if it is a good idea, long term for the backing plate.,
- It is making the mating between the head and backing plate shallower than factory, I wonder if this can oblong the double D cut away that the backing plate uses.

I will find out tomorrow if my idea will work, but I keep thinking if the idea is to distance the backing plate from the spin control, why not cut down the spin control shroud ?
- Leaves the pad mounting the same depth, not changing the stability factory there.

I've had the Rupes 21 since it was first introduced and have also have had the washer mod since day one.  I've had no problems and I use the Rupes every single day, it has been a workhorse.

So the double d cut out has not egg or oblonged on you ?

That is the only concern I have, from the backing plate not sitting on 100% stud post washer mod

No, no problems at all.

Thanks for the info.  I am sure you have already put more miles on it than I will in a life time.

Just to try it out, I ran mine with and without. There was noticeably more pad spin with the washer mod.

It was less sensitive on large curved edges and I found overall working time was reduced.

I am a noob, but I found the Rupes had a bit of a learning curve even compared to the PC which is of similar operation. It really is one to play with the speeds on and not just run all out all the time.

Congrats on the purchase and trust me, you'll love how quite it is.

I read a lot of posts that said the same thing, about the Flex, don't just run it flat out.
- I, like others here, run mine on 6 ( unless I am applying wax with it or using the clay replacement pads ).

I just no load triggered it against my Flex.

I could not hear a delta between either the Flex or the Rupes . I asked the Mrs, she said the same thing, they are about the same loudness.
- The Flex is at a lower tone than the Rupes but sound wise they are the same.

Hold both of them by the handle ( so I could pull the trigger ) they feel like the same weight.
- switches left to right ; Same same.

I am going to try it on the CR-V on FRI.  I don't know how bad the paint is ( I only took a quick look ), to know what kind of a head to head I am going to get.
- If it is in better shape than the SB, I might not see a delta.

Looking forward to hear what you think of it.

I'm quite surprised about the lack of sound difference. The Flex I heard would want me to wear ear plugs, while I can have a easy conversation while using my Rupes.

My Flex DA is loud as heck.  My Flex rotary is very quiet.

Yes, on the KB washer mod.
Yes. The Rupes 21 is my go-to machine.

I did no washer, trim the spin control shroud.

Why mess with it, is the way I looked at it.
