Garage fluorescent to LED fixture conversion
« on: December 16, 2014, 10:32:03 AM »
I finally got around to converting my 8' HO fluorescent fixtures to LED.
- I have the house just about all converted for the recess cans and the cloud fixture in the laundry room.

I have been using SP35 color corrected bulbs in 8' HO fixtures for years.

Dad finally got something for the farm market LED conversion, that is color correcting, so I figure I would go with the same ones.
- I have the same fixtures in my garage as the market has.  Markets need to keep an eye on color correcting, so food does not look bad in the light.

These are 4100 K color temp, SP35 bulbs are 3500K.  Lumen output is close ( LED are 5% more ).

It is a conversion from 8' bulb to 2 4' bulbs
- Each fixture went from 2 bulbs to 4 bulbs.

Before

After

Before

After ( car has been corrected on this side, pay attention to other items and the floor )

After

The Camera did not focus on them.  There are 5 parking lot door dents in this side.  Before with the SP35s, I only saw 2 of them  :wow:

The LED fixtures make the SP35 bulbs look yellow, which is a task to say the least.

These are direct wire LEDs, no ballast.
- the laundry room is also a direct wire with the Sylvania Entura LED bulbs.

I don't have the price for these yet.

The Sylvania EnduraLED T8 bulbs for the house, were ~ 64.00 each tube.
That would be ~ $ 250.00 each fixture for the Sylvania conversion.

- add in 4 new tombstones and a center plate to get to a 4' T8 bulb instead of 8' HO, so closer to 260.00 each.  These kits I put in had everything to convert any fixture type to LED.

Thanks Steve. That puts a damper on things. Remember, I'm a pensioner now!   :om:

LEDs are not for the faint of heart, regardless of the voltage.
- Recall how brutal the LED bar for your truck was.

Dad is also doing the RV dealer.
He did the lot lights, replaced 1000W metal halide with LED fixtures.
- Went from 277 VAC to 110 VAC and they are now running 2 fixtures for < 1/2 the cost of one.

I did the lights on the garage with these

They work great ( I cannot find my pictures at night, but this gives an idea )

Daytime shot, they blend nice when off ( our house )

The Laundry room after conversion, no flash

Steve,

Any noticeable change in your power bill? Just curious as I would like to start swapping to LED in parts of the house as budget allows.

Obviously, I'm not looking for immediate ROI, but I figure LED's are the way to go for the long term.

I'm pretty sure the price point has to come down some more in order for them to pay off in any reasonable amount of time. I'd also venture that the quality curve has to bend up a bit too. For as long as LEDs are supposed to last, so far I've been somewhat disappointed in the quality / longevity of the automotive ones.

Thanks Tom, I am sure I have a smaller resource pool to pull from up here north of the border, but am starting research now. I am putting budget together to "renovate" the garage in the spring and wanted to do LED's. I figure I can get more lights out of the same amp draw. Unfortunately my garage is wired more as a "Car port" and I have to watch what I want to plug in. Basically the whole thing is on a 15amp breaker.... :dope:

Have you considered candles? Man, with only 15 amps available, LEDs are about the only way you can go!

Going fluorescent bulbs to LED, I doubt there will be much of a power change.  Best case is about 25% less amp usage on LED.
- I just started it Sunday, and finished Tuesday, so no bill to compare for this project.

It will be hard to tell if there is any savings with everything that runs in the house.
- 2 racks of monoblock amps for the house sound system.
- 3 servers, The dual Xeon with 64GB is a space heater on to itself
- electric heater in the garage ( running tonight to try to opti coat the car ).

My ComEd energy report, I am almost double the average neighbors ( of ~ same size house ) for monthly consumption and 3x+ the energy efficient neighbors.

Having 15A, that is on the edge for running 2 halogen work lamps and a Rupes or Flex.
- Less if the wire is under sized or old.

I think the 1st step, in your project, is to run 2 20 AMP circuits out there.

Keep in mind:
I did not buy a jeep
I did not buy a side by side
I did not have to rent a larger storage building to put it all in
