4x4 light on wont go off
« on: December 13, 2012, 01:00:22 PM »
Hey folks

Trying to solve my grimlins one by one.

Got a new one.   My 4x4 light on the pathy came on when leaving the ranch this past weekend and it is staying on.

I am in 2H and have confirmed that.   Today I went ahead and torn the hubs off and disassembled them, cleaned all the old grease off, and repaced and put back on truck.   Then went through a series of tests.

1.  2H to 4H drove 20 feet stopped
2.  Placed in N then down to 4L  then back to drive
3.  Drove another 20 feet,   Stopped back to N
4.  Went all the back to 2H and back to drive and drove another 20 feet.
5   went in reverse about 80 feet and still the light is on.

I did replace a 4x4 Switch Sensor yesterday and that didn't solve the problem and I have one more sensor to replace and I am waiting on that to come in hopefully tonight.  The part is a 4x4 N Position Sensor Switch .

Any ideas why this won't come out of 4x4?

Have you verified that it is actually in 4x4, and not just the indicator being wonky?

I can verify when it is in 4x4 and out.   Its odd for sure.

In a Ford, the light is driven off of the position of the transfer case. So if the light were on in most Fords, the TC would still be in 4x4. Sounds like a Nissan is different. Got access to any Nissan technical manuals instead of just throwing parts at it?

yeah I have been throwing parts on it for sure....to answer the question, I do have the Hayes Manual and the online version as well and I have access to the FSM online from one of the forums.

There are two sensors on the transfer case.   1 is a switch the other is a neutral position sensor...I have already replaced the switch (20 bucks) and just received the other today (30 bucks)  I also tore off the hubs and rebuilt with new clean grease and use the hayes manual to put the parts in order back together.

What's the switch do? Switches are usually off or on. Maybe that's for your light? If the sensor is new Id find out if you're getting voltage to the connector.

Could be the wiring is grounding out somewhere making the truck think the switch is 'on' all the time.

Kinda depends on what type of switch, etc etc. Id start shootin wires. It sucks, I know, but gotta start somewhere.

Just a thought, but I would be inspecting grounds, sometimes odd things can happen if the motor or transfer case isn't grounded well and the switch grounds where the sensor mounts.

X2 on that one. The Service Manager at the marina taught me years ago that "All stupid electrical problems are a bad ground." He's usually right.

finding a bad ground...so what is that like,  an all day deal with a case of beer and several flashlights?

Its not too bad. All your major components should be grounded to the frame. Check for rust or thick paint which might inhibit the connections. All your major electrical components should be grounded as well. Find the grounds and check their security, then trace the lines and look for loose or broken wires.

I definitely recommend the beer though.
