Money...
« on: August 24, 2008, 10:51:23 PM »
Okay... I hate to have to ask this one, but I trust you guys...

I am virtually out of $$$... I've been getting my stuff for college, setting aside $ for gas to get to Washington in Sep (I'm moving there), and the other necessities... but I have no money for play...

SO: That said, I am not trying to get a pity story, that would belong in the soap box, so this isnt one of these  :pitty: (thanks for the new smilies, BTW). Rather, I am asking for advice>>

--Any ideas for quick oddjobs that I can earn some cash
--Any ideas to cut costs somewhere else so I can have some spare?

AMEX has all my $ right now (yes, I know, my fault that I spent it, but I'd rather not pay interest so I pay in full every month... It just hurt this month and since I am moving, I cant get a job for 2 weeks... maybe. Unless you have any ideas for a in and out job, but I'm not aware of any...)

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

I know your pain, except I have a Mastercard. I just moved into a huge house, the fiancee some how talked me into a whole new living room set, and a whole lot of other stuff all at once. My advice to you is cut back on eating out, even if it's just Taco Bell, if you have lots of minutes on your cell phone plan that you typically don't use then cut back and get a cheaper plan. If you have cable TV get rid of the premium movie channels. That's all I can think of at the moment...

I know you pain there, usually I just turn to what I know. You could start detailing a few vehicles for buddies and others to scrape up some extra cash,  or you can do odd ball hanyman jobs to help earn some extra cash. That is all I can come up with at the moment.

I'm with Val. I know there are things that everyone spends money on that they don't "need". Just think of the simple things you have that you really don't need.

Okay... so far I have done the following:

-- pull bushes from a yard to make $50
-- cut eating out (I was starting to reduce anyways...)
-- trying to get details-- most people around here cant afford it anyway... I plan on doing a few ones for friends for tips only. I dont want to charge my best buds, but they understand and are planning on compensating for materials plus getting lunch plus a touch extra... Yay!

Keep 'em coming...

checked the classifieds for a temporary part time... Only for Senior citizens so far... maybe tomorrow...

I definitely appreciate the help guys. Thanks!

Oops... just saw cufootn's post...

Yeah-- that's what I'm working on... Any specifics that you have done in the past are good to hear. I know that as a general rule I am going to need to cut down, and I'm presently brainstorming and acting on every thing I can/will do (ie: I wont NOT drive, but I have reduced a LOT)

The service industry may be a temporary option...

Check with any local catering firms in the area.  I know it may not be an ideal situation but, I know that they're always looking for people to fill for larger occasions and such.  Many of them occur in the evenings and thus, it may fit into the schedule...

My neighbor is the "Lead Chef" for a very prominent catering business here in Louisville.  He is always telling me that they look for people to help out for 'here and there' jobs that they have (i.e.: a large wedding, a corporate meal, etc).

A quick ad in your local paper may also be an option... people respond to the whole 'college kid needs cash'.  Words like "hard working" and "Willing to work" get people's attention... and, who knows, maybe you'll land some Cougar that just wants to see a college guy in her yard with no shirt.  :)

If you want / need quick cash and don't have any assets you'd be willing to part with, I'd vote for odd jobs. There are lots of folks out there who simply aren't handy. If you are- there's money to be made. Just be careful not to get into anything where if you mess up - you're liable. Also, don't get into anything where you need to invest your money before somebody will pay you. You'll end up SOL every time. Good luck!

I'd be fine with that... It's handy to have a six pack... Heck, I'd do it in a speedo if I got paid accordingly...

Thanks for the tips... I'll be checking on the catering places today... possibly calling the Star Telegram for an ad...

JP-- need any work done around the house?

Been and still am there.

After my divorce and spending everything I had to win custody of (at the time) my 18 month old son. At least I did win.

What I've done to help make ends meet.

Started detailing for money
Got rid of satalite radio
Slowed down my home internet speeds
got rid of all pay cable channels
Stopped eating out except on rare occations (about twice a month)
Cut way way down on my hobbies
Sold the boat and got a quad (uses a fraction of the gas and a fraction of the upkeep cost)
Bought a 1200 beat up 4 cylinder car for gas savings
Starting debt consolodation
No more subscriptions video games xbox360, world of warcraft, everquest, etc...
Started downloading my music instead of buying it.
Do handyman work when I get the chance
Mow the neighbors yards for cash
DVR movies off of TV instead of a stack of kids dvds

Maybe some of these you can use.

For college my suggestions you might not like but I was there with a single mother and two sisters still at home.  So there was next to no money coming in.

Move into the dorm and get a meal plan for the cafeteria.  Get a job for the university.  I got one working in the library which wasn't used much.  So I basicly ended up getting paid to study at the library with the occational person to help.  And the fact of no gas cost at all since you walk to the cafeteria and the job.

Hope this helps maybe a little bit.

Well, congrats on the winning cutsody!

Anywho, several of those I've already done, but many dont apply (for instance, at the university, high speed wireless is free and everywhere, I dont have a quad or boat or sat radio, etc)

I am defininitely one to be downloading sometimes... I hate doing it, because since several of my friends have albums, they complain about not getting what they deserve, but I guess you do what you have to (I typically just burn CDs that others already have...) Movies- Thank God I never watch them-- they're too darn expensive!

heck yeah-- I definitely appreciate the advice!!!

I just bought the 32oz sampler of D151 PRC, and it's paid for itself already-- I have the perfect vehicle for it lined up for after it comes in (older F250 V10, paint needs heavy correction, interior alright, but its a "I'll give you $40 and you do what you can for that amount)... D151 cost me $21 after shipping, so I've already saved time and made $. Plus, now it opens the door to more quick details. From the sounds of it, D151 may just be exactly what I was looking for until I get a rotary... (Which I found a slick deal http://www.topoftheline.com/makita-polisher-car-buffer.html)

This won't really help with the original topic, but here's an even better deal on a rotary.

http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/a/makita/9227c.htm?L+coastest+wzrm2565ff314431+1220255839

I just got mine from there. Shipping was only like 10 bucks. Got the Makita, a VERY nice bag, 2 wool pads, and the backing plate for $177 out the door shipped.  :golf:
