intake worth it or not?
« on: May 14, 2011, 01:14:17 PM »
Wanted to give the wife a tad more pick up and better throttle experience.

Is this worth it?

No stand alone intake is worth it.  Combine an intake with a tune and you have something.

I didn't even add an intake to the SHO with the tune I dropped in this morning. Only benefit is louder turbo sound.

Gip, how did it respond?  Are you saying the only benefit to the tune was louder turbo or the only benefit to the intake was louder turbo?  Most of the performance is the from the tune and not intake.

I wouldn't waste your money JP. Same for cold air intakes. Just my 2 cents though.

You aren't going to notice a big difference on a naturally aspirated engine.  I wouldn't waste the money.

great filter choice.  you can also grab a NAPA Gold filter.  They are made by Wix, and are the exact same quality.

I was talking about the intake only.  The factory intake on the SHO is a great design, and there is very little benefit other than a stronger turbo sound and the under hood bling factor.  I started a thread about the tune in my SHO.

I wouldn't go that far.  There are lots of applications where a CAI can make a big difference.  NOt with the Ford motors fo the last few years, but there are a lot of places where it makes a noticeable difference.

My current truck and my last truck had the K&N intake.  Next time around I'll probably just get the K&N drop in.  The only benefit I can really see is saving money on filter replacements.

Both trucks have/had exhaust and tune as well.

Heck, that's not as bad as some we've pulled out of the landscape trucks after less than 5,000 miles. You don't have hair and grass clippings clogging the thing.

Personally, I just run K&N filters in both of my vehicles. You just have to watch how much oil you apply to them after cleaning.

That and I also clean our mass air flow sensors every three or four years just in case a little oil got through.

You read the cons all of the time about them, but I've carefuly run them in 8 different vehicles over the last 12'ish years with zero problems.  Two were full intakes.  The rest were drop-ins.
