Installed GT500 Spoiler... finally
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:54:41 PM »
First off, I'll start by saying I'm pissed off at myself because I grabbed my camera, made sure the battery was charged and headed out for pictures.  Got where I was going, derrr, no memory card in it!  Had to settle for my phone so bear with me.  These pictures could have been great but I failed miserably.

Had this spoiler sitting around since probably December or January.  the car was ordered with no spoiler (still would prefer this) but came with one anyway so I opted to swap it out with the GT500 spoiler.  The original will not be going back on.  Because I like the new one so much more?  Well, yeah but also for another reason you're about to see.

I had about a half hour brain fart this morning while trying to remove the original.  The fishing line went really smooth for the first few inches and then I couldn't get it any farther.  Heat gun wasn't helping at all.  I've heard of others pulling so hard that they though the trunk was going to come off but the spoiler always gave first.  The trunk and the adhesive tape both won that battle.  Who lost?  The spoiler.  Whoops.  By the way, the problem (besides me being an idiot) was that I forgot about the bolts going through it.  Turns out fishing line doesn't cut through steel bolts very well.  Who'd a thunk it.

Fishing line doesn't cut steel bolts huh? Man, sounds like something I'd do! Bummer, but the replacement looks pretty good too.

Gotta love that feeling when you realize you've just spent a ton of time doing something so incredibly and blatantly stupid.  It's even worse when you break things in the process.  I did manage to cut through both pinky fingers with the fishing line though.  They're apparently a lot less difficult to go through than steel bolts.

That spoiler looks awesome on a coupe! I really like it. I saw one on a NBS Convertible and it didn't really suit it.

Too bad about the original, but if you've never done it before, it's hard to know all that holds it on.

Thanks.  Sadly, I knew what was holding it on.  The nuts were already removed.  This is where the stupid part came in at.  I simply forgot they were there even after I removed the nuts from the underside.

For what it's worth, I think most convertibles look awkward to begin with.  I'm not a fan.

Thanks guys.  Looking forward to the suspension mods to finish off the look (maybe...for now.)  Might run some LEDs in a few spots just because I can.  We'll see.  Probably just another passing phase brought on by Jason again.

Mike, Every time I look at your car, I just drool. That design, in that color - with your mods - is just totally jaw dropping. Then I think about what a PITA it's got to be to keep it looking as good as you do and I snap back to reality.

Oh, and dropping it into the weeds would just complete the look.

Tom, notice the lack of close ups?  Haha.  It needs a bit of work.  It's really not bad.  Most of it is just how it came from the factory.  Little blemishes here and there that need to be fixed.  Swirls have been kept to a minimum but they're still there.  The only thing that drives me nuts is the hood from when I went through a touchless car wash that ended up not being so touchless.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

You what.....????

Remember, do as we say - not as we do. I'm guilty of the same sin on a couple of occasions.
