Did my own roll-on bedliner
« on: March 02, 2011, 07:22:57 PM »
Ok, so i've wanted to do something with a bed liner for a while.  I will be keeping my plastic bed liner, but I wanted something under it to prevent rust.  So I decided to do the Dupli-Color Bed Armor.

The kit came with a 3M red scuff pad, but I did the tailgate by hand and decided screw that.  So I went up to the local NAPA and bought the pads that go on a drill.

Then I scuffed the entire bed...

I then used an air hose to blow it out and used 3M Cleaner and wiped out the whole bed.

All cleaned up and ready...

I brushed the first coat on, did a thin coat.... (not my hand in the picture)

Close-up picture after the first coat...

I let the first coat dry over night, then put 2 more coats on, waited about 1 1/2 hours between coats, so the finished product......

And a close-up of the finished product....

And I took the brackets off my side-steps and went ahead and cleaned them up and put bed liner on them....

All in all, i really like it.  It isn't Rhino or Line-X but for what I want and no more than I have in it ($100 including all the scuffing stuff and cleaner).  I didn't use the roller it came with, but brushing worked out well for me.

That looks like a lot of work. Turned out good, though.

I'm planning on doing the brackets for my tube steps too. They take a beating up here in the salt.

I've seen a few people that have the whole step rail line-x'ed.  It looks pretty cool, too.  I've thought about having both bumpers done PTM to knock down some of the chipping.  So much loose gravel on the country roads.

I was just going to repaint the brackets with rustoleum, but they do take a beating with the salt, so i figured this would hold up better.

I called Line-X about having my bumpers done, but where they are the chrome, they would have to strip the chrome and it was going to cost a small fortune, So i figure i'll just leave them.

I know someone that had chrome ones done and they just had to sandblast their's real quick and they were good to go.  Line-x is expensive without having to have that done though, so I imagine it jumps up real quick when you ask them to do extra stuff.

Nice job!
Been thinking about doing the same then I convince myself I need to have it done professionally.
Still on the fence.
You can make money or you can make excuses but you can't do both.
