Detailing for dealers (used junk)
« on: October 26, 2010, 06:15:33 PM »
Today i cleaned an 2005 VW Passatt, just under 100k miles on the clock, black leather interior, black mats, grey metallic paint, painted alloys.

The interior looked like a pack of hounds had been living inside it, the alloys has some serious brake dust on them, really it was just a piece of junk, still it took me just under 5 hours to get it somewhere decent and saleable, the dealer just looks at it and sais you missed a hair or 2  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  after nearly 90 mins of vacuming to which he was a witness and that is all he has to say..

I hate dealer cars, especialy the lower end auction junk.

5 hours hard work for $70.00

enough.

I hear you.  You bust your butt trying to turn out a good product, you don't get paid crap for it, and no one even notices that you did a great job.

When I first started out many years ago, we would get overflow from the dealer when their regular shop was too busy.  We could have had all their business, but it just wasn't worth it.
The shop that did all their work was next door to us.  It was amazing to watch what they did to those cars to get them ready for auction or the used lot.

They used carpet dye when shampooing the floors, so they could just die the dirt that didn't come out.
They would paint under the hood, and under the wheel wells, over existing dirt.
They would paint fabric and vinyl seats to cover up spots.

it was amazing.

Last year i got a call from a dealer to do a job on a late model Nissan Maxima with a cloth interior, the car had been in an accident so the paint didnt match on a couple of the panels, i mean the original paint was a black metallic and the new panels were just black, the interior needed a shampoo!! LOL after i shampooed the thing it looked so much worse, turned out my LGM just sucked out all the spray dye and paint from the interior, well anyways i never worked for him again..

Oh and of course my excellent wash job made the difference in the paint stand out a mile..

I've been doing a lot of dealer work lately, I've only lowered my prices $10-$15 from what I normally charge.  If the dealer wants quality work they will pay more.  Depending on how much you turn the vehicle around, the dealer is going to make a lot more money, so it is worth it for them in the long run.

I agree but there are so many bucket and brush guys here, it is sometimes frustrating to hear a dealer tell me that other guy will do it for $50.00..

My answer to that would be, "So, go to the other guy."

Yes, in the slower months the dealer work can be a blessing, that is when you sit around for 2 or 3 days wondering if your phone will ever ring again, still i am looking for a balance between making a living and not busting my b-lls for nothing.
