$500 Laptop
« on: September 20, 2010, 01:50:31 PM »
What is going to be my best bang for my buck laptop in the $500 and under range? Toshiba looks to be decent.

Just make sure that you are getting the full version of the software and not the trial version when you buy a laptop. I have a Toshiba Satellite that is seven years old and still going strong.
Good enough never is

I have had a problem free 17" Toshiba Satellite (AMD) running 24/7 for the last 3 years...usually with a minimum of 20 windows always open.
It was just under $600 at the time and definitely has given me much bang for my bucks.
I opted for speed and memory over space.

What kind of memory do you have? Would I be okay with 2GB and single core processor if I have a few different web pages opened at once or is it well worth bumping up to 4 and dual?

2GB of RAM works for me but I do have a dual processor.

At the time they had different configurations of screen sizes, AMD or Intel processors and various hard drive sizes from $500-$800.
This was Feb 2008 but I got the 17" AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60  2.00 GHz  With 2GB Ram and a 200GB HD, Vista Pro for about $580.

We just bought a Toshiba L665D for my son to take to college. He seems happy with it so far, but we'll see how it holds up. Best Buy has it for under $450.
