Exterior Plastics Sugestions
« on: August 28, 2010, 05:56:34 AM »
I've been using meg's #40 and H.D. and been satisfied for quite a while.  But getting some greying of the black plastics, namely the base of the windshield.  What do you guys use on window trim and hard plastics?  Need to try something new.

For hard plastics I occasionally treat with Black Wow.  Then just keep up with it using whatever you normally use.  For window trim, if you're talking about the rubber around the bottom of the side windows, for whatever reason, it's impossible to get a consistent, dark look.  I did it once with Opti-Seal by accident but I was never able to replicate it.  And I doubt Opti-Seal does anything for the rubber other than protect it from further damage.

I would give Black Wow a shot...I have been very impressed with the product.   Once dry it seems to add some protective shield on it...then for the next several months you can treat with your fav products.

I like to use HD, PB Trim Restore and Blackwow.

On my Line-X I do treat with 303.   Looks great.

After a good alcohol cleaning/scrubbing...Black Wow but I notice my mirrors and window trim seem to gain some gloss when I do ONR washes so lately I have been using detail strength ONR...except the windshield cowling which seems to just want to stay gray and suck everything up no matter what after a short time.

I had planned long ago to spray the cowl and the door handles.  Got the paint and everything I need...
I guess I dont care enough to fool with it yet...plus it's cracked.
Sometimes I use tire dressing since there is no place for it to run. :whisp:
Then it still sucks, just not so hard.

Do you guys remove the cowl to spray it or just tape off?  I'm assuming we should use Krylon Fusion and that it goes on fairly consistent.

I removed the cowl, wasn't that bad maybe 10-15 minutes. While I was at it I painted the bed rail caps and bumper cover also. Cleaned them all real good to make sure all dressings and grim was off and sprayed them. I used Krylon fusion, it covered real well. I put a couple of coats just to get an even coverage.

Unless you like removing overspray of course.

The other advantage to removing parts before painting them is the elimination of masking lines. It's virtually impossible to mask a part while still on the truck and not get a nasty masking line. That's one of the first things I look for in a used vehicle - to start deducting from the asking price.
