Ball Joints 2 Jason 0

Ok, all you guys keep saying this is easy so it makes me wonder if we somehow are missing a pin or another snap ring etc.

Let me try and explain what we did. (excuse my limited verbiage on what these parts are)

First, remove wheel
Removed Brake Callaper
removed 3 torx bolts on the hub cover then removed the cover which holds the 4x4 controller thing? Maybe called the hub spline?
then removed the 4 bolts and hub shell or outter part of the hub?  Not sure what it is called but has the brake dust deflector on it.

From there we removed the internal Snap ring....inside the hub thing.  This is where the Dana 50 and 60 are much different.  The Dana 60 is about 4" deep in there to get the snap ring out.

At this point, we can see the axle and the hub seal.

From that point it is a matter of pry on the knuckle to pull the axle

..we pried and pried, no dice.

Is there something on the back of the knuckle that holds it too?  Another snap ring by chance?

According to the parts breakdown for the 05 Dana 60 there are two snap rings, one inside the knuckle and where is the other?

Ok, what are the thoughts?

On a serious note, the hub has to come off. You may have to use a slide hammer to get it off, but it usually slides right out. or tap it with an air hammer.

Then if it still wont come out you're going to need to drive the axle seat out of the knuckle. hit it from behind using a punch and hammer, work side to side and up and down. You'd have to replace the seal and it's a pita to do.

JP,

I've got to agree with Mike2301 on this one. I've helped our mechanic do countless ball joint and axle joit repalcements on our fleet of F-350's and we've never run into the trouble you're having. (For instance, I think we've replaced that seal exactly once.) As entertaining as your decription is (your forgot the word "thingie"), it's still kind of tough for me to follow 1,000 miles from home on 6 hours sleep and without a truck sitting in front of me. Maybe it's time to break down and have someone do it for you?

I am 99% sure we did all the right things...but I did read that the seal is made to be destroyed when pulling the axle so short of hitting it directly from behind with the hammer and chisel we got stuck b/c I didn't have a replacement part.

Guys

Where can I look up the Ford OEM parts need for my Dana 60?

i need 2 OEM part numbers

1.  The actual Vac seal in the axle
2.  The yellow o ring kit on the wheel bearing  hub assembly.

thanks
