Porter 7424 // G110 // FLEX
« on: July 07, 2008, 09:09:08 AM »
 :dh:   ALERT :dh:

I've decided that I'll be pulling the trigger on one of these in the near future. I understand the Porter and G110 are basically the same thing with different stickers and the FLEX is a more advanced tool. Now the question is this, which of these would you recommend me to purchase?

I've used cheap little buffers before but nothing of the sort I'm contemplating on acquiring. I only detail two vehicles that are in good shape in terms of swirls so I don't believe I'd need all the FLEX's "superior" paint correction capabilities leaving me at the Porter and G110.

I'm open to all suggestions and opinions so let them fly. Is it worth the extra money to get a FLEX even though I'll most likely never require it's complete capabilities? Or should I settle for the slightly cheaper solution: Porter or G110? Between the two, Porter and G110, which is "better" and why? Better warranty? Durability?

My personal opinion is that you should save and go for the flex. You may not require the extra capabilities of the flex now but who knows what the future holds. Its always easier to work a machine that has more capabilities easier then working an underpowered machine harder. Again I love my flex and would recommend it if you want to spend the extra money it is well worth it. That is just my two cents....

I wouldn't say that flex is that much better than a PC or G110.  If I was starting over, I would probably still get a flex to start with but it is several hundred bucks.  I think a DA is fine for most of what you are going to be doing on your own truck.

The flex does provide more movement, 8mm I believe and higher speeds but I have been using it on my details and to be really honest, it ain't that much better.   It did remove some marring that my DA didn't get but its kind of hard to say if that was my technique, the products/pad combo or the flex or combination.

Just food for thought.

Just rabbling, my post probably doesn't make sense.

It makes perfect sense, and what you've mentioned is what I'm gettting at. I can get whichever machine I decide on, I'd get a combo package with pads, but I'm trying to get the "best bang for my buck." Checking prices on the three it'd cost me roughly $400 for a FLEX with pads, etc. The other two I can get for roughly $100 cheaper, in today's terms that's one full tank of gas!

Just my humble opionion, I'd go for the DA.  I got the PC 7424 and have ordered the nice "over the top" handle that the G100 unit comes with.  It was a matter of $ for me as well.  If you find the need for the Flex later on down the road, then pull the trigger on it when the time comes.

Either way though, you won't lose.

Thanks for the opinions guys, I think I'm going to settle for the 7424. Now I need to figure out what pads I need and how many....

I hope I didn't talk you out of a flex, but I think I would have done the same thing given what I know now.... DA and a Rotary are pretty much it.

I wouldn't say you talked me out of it. You brought up a point that was already roaming in my head.

How many pads do you go through on a typical detail? If it's one pad per product you can potentially go through quite a bit...

I don't mix products on pads...sadly I do have 4 full sets of pads...2 VC sets and 2 CCS sets.   I don't have "every" pad, i would like to get that LC Red pad to try for the "jeweling" step that was posted by Dan.

Just to note, the G110 is NOT the same as a G100/PC7424. The G100 was a re-badged PC7424, but the G110 was an ALL new designed in house unit with 30% more power. It is definitely a noticeable, and needed amount. I have both a G100 and a G110 and the G110 is considerably better for paint correction.

I also have a FLEX 3401, and a Makita 9227c.

I only find myself reaching for the G110 and the Makita lately, but the FLEX is a fantastic tool too. I just find the Makita and the G110 easier and more pleasurable to work with than the FLEX.

Was that before or after you went to the 4" pads.  The 4" pads alone are reason enough for me to get the PC over the Flex.

yes that was before, I like my PC 7424 with the 4" pads and I love my Flex. I've had the Dewalt sitting in my garage for almost 2 months its still in the box.  Never opened.

If money wasn't an option, I would recommend all three...if money was an issue, I would get the PC over the Megs machine simply b/c I think the megs looks like a Harbor Freight product and from what I have heard and read, lots of problems with them.  I would still use the 4" pads knowing what I know now.     Of course that is my opinion that doesn't say much.

I am kind of torn on what I would do knowing what know now. I love my Flex...high quality, powerful and for Dewalt users, it fills that gap for below 1200 RPMS...

Hard to say I suppose.  Maybe I would prefer the Flex with smaller pads and the Dewalt, but since I haven't used my Dewalt yet, I have to go on what I know.  I love having the PC and the Flex.

I know I will like having all three once I get moving on my Dwalt.  (Maybe this weekend)????

RR,

If you could, get back to me on what you think of the DeWalt. The local Detailing Supply house has a deal on them this month. And, I may have to do some detailing work to keep bread on the table in the next few months.

When did you purchase your G110 and how much do you use it?
