Title: 1990 Jaguar XJS
Post by: Too Stroked on October 12, 2021, 04:11:12 PM
I figured it was about time to share an actual detail, so here goes.

This 1990 Jaguar XJS (Yes, it had the V-12) rolled into my driveway early this morning for a full exterior detail. I agreed to clean the interior - which was pretty nice anyway - but declined to do anything under the hood. If any of you remember the horror stories about English car electrical nightmares, you'll know why.

The car didn't look horrible, but the sun wasn't really out yet either. The chrome wheels looked pretty bad with flaking chrome and tons of brake dust. After washing and drying it, the sun was finally out and it became more apparent that the car had some paint work and lots of micro-marring - particularly on the hood, roof and rear deck lid. (Should I say bonnet?) Here's what it looked like:

After washing, I figured out pretty quickly that I had to hit this one pretty aggressively. I went with two full passes using 3D One on Hex Logic Cutting pads on the Flex. The first pass minimized the marring. The second one pretty well knocked it out. Next, I went with 3D One again on White Lake Country pads on the Flex. There was still some marring, but I didn't want to tempt fate on 30 year old paint. The wheels were done with Poor Boys Spray and Rinse Wheel Cleaner, then followed with Mother's Chrome Polish. Here's the end result:

Holy crap.  First thing that stood out to me was the wheels didn’t even look chrome.  But those final shots look sharp!  Nice work, Tom!

Thanks guys! Heard back from the owner today. (The car was dropped off and picked up for him.) He was totally blown away. Now he wants me to do a 1950's vintage Jaguar he restored. I'm a little queasy on that one and told him I'd have to look at it first. That's a lot of liability for me to take on in case I mess up.

Not sure how I missed this, but amazing work!
