Title: So this happened today.
Post by: Rollingrock on May 09, 2018, 09:43:30 PM
One for me and one for Nicholas

Picked them up used from a local family looking to get out of RC....got them down to 300 for the pair...saved a ton of money.  Early B Day present for him.

So now you know what is going to happen...they are going to get all cleaned up and a nice coating of Hyperdressing.    Planned to convert them to brushless and already upgraded the batteries.

RC's are a ton of fun! BUT, you gotta know when to quit they can put a real hurt on the wallet.

I absolutely love the idea.  Have never been able to pull the trigger.  Likely never will unfortunately.  Too many other expensive hobbies.

Yeah, agree, other things are here but this is a selfish play for me and the kids.  We'll see how long they want to do it.  Trying thigns to get them off technology games and more into hands on stuff.  Break it...fix it.

We are also staring to build model rockets...hands on stuff

I used to build model rockets. I had a bad habit of cramming rocket motors that were waaaaay too big in some of them. In fact I believe a few of them I launched are still up there - somewhere.

LOL

I have 2 kits to build with Nicholas..   had to get some extra supplies, using 3400 grit on balsa wood takes longer than I thought.   Turns out you need to take a zero off in order to get that to work....LOL

It's getting increasingly harder to find places to fly them here.  Just not enough open land.  We would fly at the sports field next to the public pool.  I remember one fall one came down inside the pool, which was obviously closed for the season.  Watching my mom, of all people, scale the chain link fence to fetch it from the water is actually funnier now than it was back then.  Especially since I was a stick and just squeezed through gate right about the same time she got one leg over the top.

Come hell or high water, when I have a kid, we will do stuff like this.

That was the ticket.

Thing is the recovery stage would some times blow the top apart instead of the nose cone off.
- Down comes a fiery mess.

Today is not the cardboard tube ones from the 70s; it has turned pro.

That is awesome Tom....we saw 2 stage builds the other day....crazy.  Estes has come a long way in the past 30 years but not really at the same time.   We only got skill 2 and 3 to try first.

Been getting all the crap we need to get started.   Ugh, this is crazy all the stuff we need.

We never tried to purposefully have this happen, but should have known better going larger.
After a few shots some times the nose cone would not come off.

There was also the cases of where it went Apollo 1 on us and lit the field on fire...

It is light years from 4+ decades ago.

We did not have the extra 3.25 for the fancy stand after buying a 3 pack of engines, which lead to a duck & cover exercise at times.
-  This was back in the days when lawn darts were considered fun not a weapon..

My older brother and I purpose built a little tiny rocket (about 6" tall) and stuffed a C6-5 rocket motor in it. No parachute mind you. We then went out on the frozen pond (about 1.5 miles long by 1/2 mile wide) in our back yard to launch it. Well. it went up all right. Right out of sight. Knowing that what comes up must come down - even if it went to Mars - we decided to duck and cover. The damn thing came straight down - about 5 minutes later - less than 10 feet from us. Stuck the nose cone right into the ice. Yea, that was smart.

Reminds me of the movie Grown Ups, with the bow and arrow.

By the way, lawn darts were awesome, too!

That's pretty hilarious and lucky all at the same time.

You guys are much too sophisticated for me, I messed around with potato guns, not rockets.  :uugly:

Kids now a days just don't know the fun.  I remember aiming at birds on power lines with potato guns.  This was in a housing development where I grew up.  Good times!

The time frame I am talking about, a potato gun would have weighed a ton made out of cast iron pipe.
Around here construction matured as Cast Iron, then Black Plastic waste then PVC in the 80s.
- Mom & dads house was a modern build in 1975 with copper water pipe and black plastic waste pipe.

The closest I ever got to a potato gun was the pringles can ( if you could find someone that did not buy generic chips in a bag), a tennis ball and lighter fluid.  It took 3 people scrounging items to get that together.
- The kid who's dad had lighter fluid always seemed to be a tool that you did not want around.  He would rat everyone out in 5 seconds flat when something went sideways. :redneck:

The husband of one of my wife's best friends is into the really big stuff, over 10k feet stuff.

My son built one of these during scouts, and was part of the world record.  We even recovered his rocket.

So we had two launches today.

First with the very light rocket engine, only went about 250 feet...caught it on the way down...

Second flight with the bigger engine...was awesome...8--900 feet or so...but the shock cord busted loose so the rocket fell down the the soft dirt landing (no damage) then Nicholas got to climb a few fences and trespass to find the nose cone and chute.

Got them back and now he wants to build the next one all by himself.

Very cool!  Love the hopping fences part.  Wait until the disappointment of losing one in a tree or until one just disappears, never to be seen again.

It's so great when you get one back and the flight goes according to plan.  But you never remember those.  It's the jumping fences and trying to get all your parts back, the ones you never seen again, the ones that don't exactly descend properly and crash in to multiple pieces and need extensive reconditioning... Those are the ones you remember.

We had one called Big Bertha or something like that.  It reminded me of a traditional red rocket you'd see NASA launch. It came tumbling out of the sky and crashed into a set of aluminum bleachers at the sports field and broke.  Had to repair it but it flew again.  The rain maker was purple and blue and tall.  Ugly as can be.  That's the one that landed in the public pool during off-season.  We had one that looked like a double rocket, side by side cockpit sort of deal.  Had jet like wings that expanded.  That damn thing shot up and had the trajectory of a not so tall rainbow and stuck nose first in the ground like some king of missed out for death.

I don't remember most of the others.  Just the time spent with my dad.  There werent many of those times.

About the same probably but mostly in the Central Time zone with a few trips to SFO from time to time.

Looks like IAH, DFW, ORD, STL, MSP, AUS, NWA and SFO/SJC

Is there a reason you are considering backing out on the offer you accepted ?

It is never going to be great after getting sideways with your boss.  Best you can hope for is a cease fire.

Remember JP, a job is a means to an end - a means to provide for your family. Many employers consider a job to be an end and those are the folks you never want to work for.

About 25 years ago, I was working for a manager who had it all wrong and wanted me to be a slave to her and the company 24/7. I told her we were all done one day and she gave me the "You'll never work in this town again" speech. Little did she know I already had a better job lined up. Man that felt good! The take away: Family comes first.

Thanks Gip, yeah it was interesting.   End the end, I am going to leave...but I do get to buy my stock that I am eligible to buy that is pre IPO or acquisition.   So I am thinking I am going to do that pending the strike price.

Could be a bust or it could be good.
