Title: 2017 Can Am Maverick
Post by: Kitzy on March 04, 2018, 07:12:24 PM
While visiting family in Tennessee, a family member came across a deal on Facebook.  It was a great price but I had two quads on my trailer already and I didn't want to spend the money.  The family member sent a text to the seller and the guy called him right back and said he'd sell it for less than that even.  If only it wasn't so far away from me and I was home to see about a loan.  I got home a few days later and decided to look at the ad again to find he dropped the price even more than he said on the phone.  A quick trip to the bank and a phone call to the seller and we were rolling.  7.5 hour drive each way and here she is.  Only 300 miles on the odo.

This is the only picture I have taken.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180305/cab324045870fff06e3784273580c261.jpg)

About that...

I can't get rid of my quad.  This thing is fun but there's something very different about riding the quads.  Depends on the mood.

Here's a few pics from our recent outting on the quads.  There is video but I haven't edited it yet.

I guess that means you'll just have to be in the correct mood when you sell them to me then.

See that picture where all three quads are stuck.  The guy on the middle one said "Mike, go through there!" Then... I went through there.  Sorta.

NEVER SWAMPED.

This is my fear when buying a used bike.

Speaking of swamped....about to get stuck on Boston to Newark and Newark to DFW....may have to cancel and come back for another day.   Calling for 2 feet in New Jersey.

No harm was done to any of the quads in those pictures.  None of them took any water in through  the motor.  Just another day in the mud.  Even when you do suck some water, it ends your day out but you can just change the oil a hand full of times until you've purged everything out and it's just clean oil again.

Prepping for the storm.  Had to get everything inside.  I think it's safe to say we are officially out of room in the garage.  Between her car, my truck, her tractor, the quads, the sxs... Hell there are been kayaks on the ceiling and bikes on the wall.  It's a wrap.

I think you loaded the garage wrong...  You have the tractor and plow buried in the back.

Nope.  The first thing to come out is going to be the Maverick.  It's going to come out to stretch it's legs in the snow.  But more importantly, the tractor/plow would be too difficult to swing around in the front of the garage without hitting things.  The tractor and Maverick are parked in the middle between the two doors, so it's not a straight shot to pull them in.

They actually backed off a little on the models.  Atleast for us.  I don't think NJ has changed much because it went east a bit.  Last night totals increased to 20" locally.  This morning they backed them back down to 12-16" at the higher end of the ranges.  It's the wind that's got everyone worried.  People still don't have power from Fridays storm because of all of the trees completely uprooting everywhere due to constantly rain we get and high winds.  Now with a foot of snow fall today and 40ish mph winds, it could really put a hurting on the area.  Shall see.

Storm turned out to be a huge dud.  Atleast compared to what they were calling for.  I'd say somewhere in 6-8" range on non-paved areas.  Crazy thing is we got almost zero wind.  It wasn't even breezy.

Had the Maverick and a grizzly out on the streets and around the house some.

We just got back from my Dad's place. My boy had a absolute blast in the Rhino and Ranger. I was happy to get close to 500 miles on the sled.

I am currently waiting for the previous owner to receive the title and forward it to me.  He sent me proof he paid off the loan.

So this happened yesterday though.  I had tapped the bumper in a bit when I hit this small hill at a good clip.  I was pretty sure it just pivoted at the bolts.  So I hooked to a tree and was successfully straightening it out using reverse.  I thought... One more good pull.  And that was that...  So, first mod will be a bumper.

LMAO.

In this case, possibly.  I may replace it with an aftermarket parts... Aka, an upgrade.  If go with another stock bumper then no, it's not a mod.

Nice options out there.  Looks like they might cost what a front bumper upgrade for your truck costs.

The only bumper I'm really interested in is the Dragonfire bumper.  I actually like the look of the stock bumper.  I don't like that it's aluminum though.  That's likely why it snapped the way it did.  I was going to pull it in and weld it until I realized it was aluminum.  I thought about buying the SuperATV bumper which is really simple looking but kind of ugly and modifying it to accept the stock plastics.  I found a used oem bumper on eBay listed at 159 OBO.  I made a low offer figuring on a counter offer.  The counter offer was for 157.  I may revisit that option.

While looking at options, I came across an eBay add for a used oem bumper for $5.  Best part... Local seller.  I messaged him and met up with him this afternoon.  Paid cash.  Swapped my plastics on to it since his were red and part of one was missing.  Done deal.  I do need to replace a bolt as I bent the last one and lost the threaded clip but I will stop at the hardware store tomorrow and grab a replacement bolt/nut/washers.

First mod done.  (We are going to forget the bumper thing ever happened.).

Sport Low Mod.  Anyone familiar with ATVs and UTVs know there is usually a HIGH gear and a LOW gear.  I can't speak for other machines but these are the same way but also have a Eco Mode and a Sport Mode.  However, Can Am decided that Sport mode shouldnt be available in LOW, which is where most riders are going to spend their time.  Basically you leave it in LOW unless you need to go faster than LOW will allow.  On this one, LOW gear tops out at 43mph.  Way faster than I will likely have it on most trails.  I've had it up to 66 so far though my understanding is it will hit 75.

Anyway, what this all means is LOW is basically stuck in ECO mode regardless of if the switch is in Sport or not.  The difference?  60% power reduction.  The Sport Low mod is a plug and play harness that tricks the computer into thinking it's in HIGH.  The only two downsides, it muh easier to tear stuff up in low with that much power and the gauge cluster always displays HIGH when really you're in LOW.

Long story short... $25+20 minutes=More Powerrrrr!!!

Ok, I have to ask. Did it stop there all by itself or did your "brass balls" stop it?

And in answer to your question, yes, it would appear that trees are out to get you.

Actually my shin stopped it.  It pinned my leg in to the rear fender and that's what actually brought the machine to a stop.  This was years ago.  Just figured it may fit the topic.

I have to think I will lose some power.  It is not a heavy combination.  I will reclutch it as soon as I figure out which direction I want to go in.  These things have a stupid clutch design from the factory.  The turbo versions have a much better design so I may use that and upgrade a few things with it.   I'm waiting on word back from Air Dam on what he recommends and what it will cost.

They're a little bigger than I expected.  They are almost true to size which is rare.  They're 30x10 and actually measure 29.75" tall.  The best part is a I was worried it would be too wide for my liking.  I was expecting to be 69" wide, up from 64".  I'm sitting right at 67".  I gained almost 2" of ground clearance.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181011/b613426923fd30100b6c44f7edd01495.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181011/38cb17495bcfe822bcee1a9e8f13dd00.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181011/0e6f8c0f50eed3db20d2e3201c1c7deb.jpg)

There is a spot at the end of my neighbor's driveway where I drag the skid plate and one out behind the house on one of our trails where I drag.  Curious to see if the extra clearance solves that.  That is until I dig the ruts deeper.

Dumb question: do they make fender flares / extensions for it ?

If they do not you can always shade tree mechanic up some out of rubber roofing material or an old bed mat for a truck.

It might ugly up the front view a bit, but having at least the front tires covered might help you get back home cleaner.
- Then again I have seen what you can do without wider tires so it might be for not.. :redneck:

I'm considering something.  I've seen different fender options.  A lot of people make their own.  I may have to try at least one ride without them to see how bad it will be.  This thing is much different in the way it throws water and mid than the ATVs.  On our first ride out with it, I hit a roughly 2' deep mudhole within the first 10 minutes of the ride.  It was cooler out.  I knew we'd get splashed.  What I hadn't expected was a complete wall of water.  With the ATVs, it splashes outward.  With the SxS, it creates a vertical wave similar to diving in to a crashing wave at the beach.  With no roof and no windshield, we were 100% soaked and I was 110% in the dog house.  It wasn't until the third time out, while I was loading the ATVs back on the truck because we blew a tire out on one, that I told Cassie to go rip the SxS with her sister up and down this huge trail near the trucks.  With huge water holes, they both came back giggling and soaked, but it was her first time trail riding the SxS and she now had an understanding of what happened that first day.  Haha.

Roxbloks FTW. They aren’t cheap though!

I bought them for Cassie's WRX.  You are right.  They are not cheap.  The way I am going to look at it until I actually get it out is that if I'm going riding I'm either hitting the mud holes and expect to get muddy or I'm avoiding them and it shouldn't be too bad.  Haha or somewhere in between which means I have to do something about it.

I recently did an alignment on it and then after putting the new tires on it you could clearly see the alignment was way off.  Tie rod end bolt was loose.  Tightened it down and it made it better but was still put.  Noticed I have a bent tie rod.  Realigned and it seems fine.  Infact, it turns much sharper now so I assume it was out of whack and bent for some time now.  The new wheel and tire setup should have it turning wider.  Wonder what I was missing before.
