Title: Lake Tahoe Drone Footage
Post by: Rollingrock on February 10, 2018, 11:29:37 PM
Wanted to throw this up here....

recently got a DJI Phantom 4 Pro Drone....decided to take it to Tahoe for our company meetings.  Took some cool videos.  Here is a little video I put together after day one.

I will probably redo this with updated footage, I got some cool stuff.  Some of this was shot 1-1.5 feet above the water and some at 500+ feet.

Sorry for the shitty music, not a lot of cool royalty free music out there.

Awesome footage JP! I think it's pretty incredible that you can get shots that only a helicopter could accomplish just a few short years ago.

I have been toying around with getting a drone for this summer. Looking for something a little more portable than yours, so may be getting a Mavic Pro if I pull the trigger.

Thanks man, this P4 Pro has its perks and advantages but traveling isn't one of them but TOALLY WORTH IT...I need longer flight time for spotting hogs on the ranch....but that said, the Mavic Pro Platinum sure is sexy and portable and almost the same flight times.

Maybe Kitzy will chime in after he gets his first flight times unders his belt.   LOL

Awesome footage there JP! The things one can do with a drone these days are unbelievable.

A caution on flying over water though. The offshore powerboat club I belong to bought a drone a couple of years ago to shoot video of some of our outings. Last summer on nearby Seneca Lake, they sent the drone up as a bunch (about 25) of us approached the camera boat at 60 MPH or so. Just as it went up, a gust of wind caught it and slapped it right into the drink. We recovered the drone, but the camera and mount were MIA in 900 feet of water. Ugh!

Yes.  Jason's trip to Lake Tahoe was an expensive trip for me.  I always wanted a drone.  I was tossing the idea around for a while.  I almost bought the GoPro version a while back because it has some features I could use outside of the drone that were compatible with the GoPro.  I hesitated, gopros drone division went under and that solidified that idea.  So after Jason rejuvenated my desire to have a drone, I purchased a Mavic Pro Platinum on Friday.  Unfortunately I waited too long and it couldn't ship that day or I would have had it yesterday.  Now I will have it Tuesday.  Giving me almost no time to play with it before I take it to Tennessee.

I also wanted something more portable.  The Mavic Air is smaller and in some ways a little better and even cheaper but the trade offs weren't worth it to me.  The Mavic Pro has a better controller (has a screen, don't need to use smart phone), better wireless connection system from remote to drone and longer flight time.  It can also go further which I think is somewhat attributed to the longer flight time and better connection.

Surprised it tanked like that.  I watched testing of them where they used leaf blowers to the tune of 220 mph air (so they say, not likely) directed right at them and they only moved a few feet but stayed in the air.  Maybe it was a coincidental malfunction.

you will love the screen built in with the controller...a reason I opted for the Pro "Plus"

Per Tom's note, with the integrated camera's on the DJI's I suspect the one your buddy lost was not a DJI so I wouldn't be able to speak to the flight capabilities.

As for flying over water...it is risky for sure but since there was no boats on the water I felt safer...that and I did fly overs to make sure there wasn't other issues like Ducks/Geese etc.  I was flying close enough that prop wash was evident when I wasn't moving.   Also made for cool movement.

Mike, free tip, when using near dirt and or sand, you probably need tripod launch mode and same for landing.   I just hover mine and grab it out of the air.   Gonna use my P4 for a while and wait for the pricing to drop some on the Mavic's but rest assured, that will be my next purchase.   Hell, pending on what you think I may get one sooner.

I wonder if that wasn't the GoPro Karma I was referring to in my post.  The gimbal is removable so it can be handheld for things like skiing and such so the footage is watchable and not all over the place.  I imagine if it smacks in to the water it could very well poop off.  And at that point the camera being attached to it would just sink, especially because it wouldn't be mounted to the waterproof case or a float.

The tripod deal, is that to keep the props from dusting the crap out of everything?

Tripod is just a take off and landing mode.

The one thing you are going to be surprised with is the total lack of information that comes with your DJI.  Know this, before you do anything, update it.
PS always turn on the controller first....then drone.

first flights, you should go in to "Beginner" mode.

Unpack and charge both controller and battery.

Once charged, get controller on wifi and set up account...then update.  It is Android so it will be familiar to you.    Then if it is like the Phantoms, there is a supplied cabled, turn on drone and update that too via controller.

Go fly.   Wide open spaces.....

Great info guys! I was also looking at the Karma, but quickly figured out how much of a dumpster fire that product turned out to be. I almost picked up a used one "cheap", glad I didn't.

I'll likely go for the Mavick Pro Platty. Seems to be the best fit overall for what I want to use it for. The air looked good overall, but I know that I would have Kitzy envy...

There does seem to be a few used ones in my area. Not sure of the cons of buying used, other than potentially being crashed.

I think the Air is probably a good machine.  Mostly the controller was a deal breaker for me.  There's no screen.  You need to use wifi and there's a bit of a lag so they say and very rarely but there is also an occasional disconnect.  I'm not sure how the cameras compare.  In comparisons I've read, the Air comes out on top but to my eye, I actually liked the Mavic better.

Also, I don't think the Karma was necessarily bad, atleast not after they worked out the bugs after the initial recall. They just couldn't hang with DJI.  DJI pretty has the market.  Now I'd be more concerned with what kind of service you'll be able to get with the Karma.

Personally, I don't like the idea of WiFi connectivity. The Pro having a better controller is a bonus for me.

I wanted the Karma so I could make use of the camera and Gimble, but with the lack of sensors and some pretty odd drifting behavior. It's just not worth the headache for me.

Same reasons I wanted the Karma.  Mainly the gimbal.  Wanting a drone plus getting a handheld gimbal seemed like a huge bonus to me.  In the end it wasn't worth it.  If I remember right, the Karma didn't have a very good distance either.  1.7 miles or something.  Maybe even less.  I don't remember.

I just checked out that Karma

that is pretty cool....and versatile camera usage.

I would consider it...but I only did a few videos on the reviews...

The Karma has an advantage for no prop in the frame but that is easy to get around...adjust height and gimble.

I still think that Dji has the market but that is impressive from GoPro.

It arrived before 9am this morning.  Pretty awesome.  It is intimidating when you open it and see everything that comes with it.  The batteries and controller are charging.  The app is downloaded but I haven't done anything with it.  Likely won't be able to mess with it until this afternoon or evening because I have dinner plans.  Anyone who knows me, knows I'm not a people person.  I hate crowds.  I won't go within 50 yards of a restaurant on Valentine's day so we do it the day before or after.

This charging hub isn't what I expected.  It charges up to four batteries but not simultaneously.  It charges them in sequence of whichever battery has the most power left first and hen moves on to the next battery with the highest charge until all are charged.  So all four take 5 hours to charge.  I do like that it's a smart design though and the highest gets charges first, getting you flying sooner while the others continue to charge.

The bag that comes with it is high quality.  It's just not exceptionally spacious.  Luckily, unlike GoPros, there aren't a ton of accessories where you need to bring everything you can just to be prepared.

Consider getting a rapid charger

I have one for the P4 Pro...charges all my batteries and controller...FAST

Jason, quick question.  I know you need to maintain line of site with the drone.  How sensitive is that?  Obviously you don't want it on the opposite side of a mountain.  But what if, for instance, you're behind a thicker tree line or something?

Line of sight is important...you can add range extenders that do an amazing job at increasing the output of signal for those times...what you want to do is always try to face where the drone is...if you look at your screen and it start pixelating, you need to go higher to get in line of sight.   Through trees is ok though. I had to do that in Tahoe..just don't turn your back to the drone...fly 1st person by lookin at screen...facing you, nose to you is 2nd person and everything is opposite on the sticks.

Wondering if that covers "lost" product too.

You would know better than I would if it's covered but I thought I read somewhere you should get it in case you lose it.   That doesn't mean it was from a good source though.

The DJI app said I ha e two days to get the insurance or is that something else?

Jason, I don't mean to jack your thread.  Just do the think my first trip out is deserving of a new thread.  Haha.  Nor does it compete with Tahoe.  Haha

Just a couple snaps.  This thing intimidates the hell out of me right now. Watching it go up and damn near disappear is nerve racking.  Especially not knowing all of the options and buttons yet.

Dude, that is awesome....and you are not alone...first flights are tough....wait till others get around you and look over your shoulder..I actually was shaking I was so nervous of my first flights in Tahoe b/c i was in enemy grounds...LIBERAL meca and was waiting for someone to bother me while I was flying.  I just try to stay safe and not be intrusive.   That Mavic is quieter than mine so you don't have to fly as high to be heard.

You should be able to run video and take photos at the same time...video button is near the gimbal control on the left and shutter button is on the right side of the controller.

Great job, gives you a whole new perspective.

You will get your confidence up once you get it figured out.  Takes some flights.

Thanks.  Our property is 300x300 feet.  I barely flew out of that.  I took it up to 350 feet and stopped.  I was just getting a feel for flying it manually and panning around with the camera.  Will take it out again this evening.

Thanks.  Our property is 300x300 feet.  I barely flew out of that.  I took it up to 350 feet and stopped.  I was just getting a feel for flying it manually and panning around with the camera.  Will take it out again this evening.

Using flight modes takes time to set up and can be tricky.   What I would recommend you try is to become smooth and clean with flying in circles using forward and side trust and gentle gimbal turns on the camera.     POI is the best method for doing this but can take up to 3 min to set up before you hit the record button.   That is 3 min of battery time just wasted.

Stay out of sport mode until you get proficient.  It changes everything.

No sport mode yet.  It's such a weird feeling as you fly it further away.  I took it to the end of the road, maybe a quarter mile away.  I just feel like I'll never see it again at that point.  Haha.

I promised a picture of the tonneau... Figured why not use the drone while it's out.

Cover looks good, I have the same hand print in dust on mine too!

Did you ever find where the end cap screws go?   Was I right or was it something different?

You were correct.  Totally missed that step.  I just put the screws in after playing with the drone that resulted in that picture.  Screws aren't in there in the picture.  Hell, the back passenger end cap isn't even on in that picture because it fell out in the garage and I didn't notice.

Mike, you gonna fly any this weekend?

I just got a controller lanyard.   so I don't drop the damn thing.

We are expecting rain in the am, but then I may drive around the countryside and see if anything looks intresting to see from the air.

The sun has barely been out at all since I got the thing.  Drove down to Tennessee this morning and it rained all but an hour of the 11 hours it took us to get there.  Rain all day tomorrow as well.  So hopefully sometime after that.  Already planning places to check out once I get back.

Do you think that would help it cut through the air better?  Basically decreasing drag and therefore the time it takes to fly somewhere?  Haha

Did a little video.  Takes some getting used to as far as handling and being smooth with everything.  For me, I've always used inverted controls so down on a joystick makes something go up.  So I'm trying to fight that.

It still wasn't a nice day out.  I tried a little flight this AM and it started raining on me so I brought it in.  It stopped for a small window so I took it back out.  And if you watch, yes I almost hit a tree and then almost a pole.

Great flying, you got balz that low to the ground (er says the guy that flys over water)

One thing you can do is calibrate your controller joysticks...that can help be smoother.

Another trick is to fly slower, then when you edit the video clip, you add speed to it so it is smoother.

Nice work

If you saw the other video, that one was ballsy.  If the video didn't end up being so long I would upload it.  Maybe I can cut it down on my phone.  I have no other way to edit it right now.  I didn't bring my laptop.

I just landed it.  Got up and took it right out.  I actually flew through that barn from the other side of the tree line.  I'm gonna crash this thing yet.  Haha.  I did lose contact with it because I dropped it down too low on the other side of that field.  Almost had to go hike to retrieve it.  Was able to hold the controller real high in the air and get the drone to climb a bit though.

I have to play with the settings.  I dont feel like my pictures are as clear as others unless they are just edited photos.  I will play with them on Photoshop back home.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180218/7cf4f4fc39c8772d2f43b1e595caeb47.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180218/8caf950602562c835c1ea8b39c1df28b.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180218/a40d36a502bf19813839711798e3583d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180218/a1c3e18b752b56cc8ad63f9e6d6d718e.jpg)

I had an ND4 filter on for that.  But I can't figure out how to manually adjust everything yet so I am using auto.

There is a big lake right down the road.  I will try to get out to it at some point.  If not there are a lot of places to go back home within a half hour to 45 minutes.  Im trying to spend time with family right now.  I was the first one up this morning and out flying the drone while everyone was sleeping.  Haha.  It was in the 40s and I'm out in shorts and sandals because I couldn't go through my stuff to get proper clothes out.

Ok, first let me caveat this by saying, I am registered with the FAA, have a tail number and obey the law....that said the FAA 107 rules state that 1 mile is RED...NFZ...but outside of 4.5, it is "yellow/green" with exceptions.  The only way to get around it is to take a hot spot and ask for an instant (24 hour) pass.

I would NEVER fly near an airport nor NFZ's but our Archery Range is exactly 4.5 miles  away from a RED NFZ.   How are we supposed to get legal photos under 250ft in those yellow/green areas.   (Class C, E Space)

Ugh

I have to assume it's using GPS to locate you and restrict you.  Can you disable the GPS in one of the modes so you can fly?  You won't have the return to home but if you fly smart you should be ok.

I realize it might not be feasible but out of curiousity, what happens if you start outside of the NFZ and enter in to it?  Will you basically hit that imaginary wall when you get there?

So I went back to the same spot in the "NFZ" this time armed with my hot spot, I did the submit check for knowing I was there and it did allow me to take off.

Now here is where the fun begins.  Every 30 seconds, it yells at you...something about verification ...I only flew to 202 feet b/c it was windy AF.

Then trying to land...it would not.  I had to grab it out of the air.

I packed my gear and got the heck out of there.

Haha.  Pushing your luck, huh?  I had mine refuse to land once while it was doing an RTH.   Had to manually override it because it was attempting to climb to 30 feet which would have put it in the tree I was currently flying under.  After a couple attempts it finally landed.

Just get it in the air again.  This time tape a note to it asking for permission to fly and go hover on front of the window of the tower.  Maybe at the end write "PS This is Jason Priakos... I'm kind of a big deal." I don't see what could go wrong.

I was just out trying sport mode.  Definitely a lot faster.  Biggest thing is it turns a lot faster.  When it's a little bit far away and I start rotating it, I tend to lose the direction it's pointed in because of how fast it spun.  I took it out to about 2500 feet away from me.  That's the farthest yet.  It got there in a hurry though.

Sport mode is a patience saver.  It gets where it's going fast.  I do notice video issues on rapid declines in altitude.  Had it out over the lake today.

I'll have to look.  Sometimes it stops at level and sometimes it will go just a bit higher.  Not really sure what determines whether it will go higher or not.  Maybe it depends on the mode I'm in.

I suspect the firmware (he is not saying this) upgrade was more for NFZ's than height. That is the only reason to do that mode.  There is no situation I can think of where i need to fly higher than 500 meters...I haven't been above 425 ft or so.  Going higher puts you in higher winds and thus more battery needed to fly.

I am too new to this and I don't know the "market" for these things.   I would ask him why he is selling.

That all said, for stuff like this, I like to buy new.

As I type I am thinking...I wonder what the Canadian laws are like...Fed Parks and stuff in the US are also NFZ's.

hmmmmm

Depending on elevation and where you're flying it may come in handy to fly higher than 500 feet (meters is another story).  If you're already starting at a low elevation and flying around mountain tops or canyons.  I've seen people fly from the top of mountains that are already at 10000+ feet elevation.  Wind is a concern for sure though.

Just to be clear, we are talking about flight heights from Starting point, regardless of elevation over sea level.  Correct?

I was talking about both.  Elevation was in regards to winds being higher.  I agree with the winds but what do you do when flying from mountain tops at high elevation.  For instance starting from 10k feet and flying to 10,400 or starting lower and flying to the same height.  Just an example.

As for flight heights from starting point, I can see a need for going higher than allowed.  Like I said, near mountains and canyons.  Sometimes you just need more height.  That 400 foot rule if I understand it is 400 feet above objects.  So 400 feet above a building or mountain is the same as 400 feet above a lake or field.

I gave him a call. He said he lost the third battery when he left it in a park or something. He modified the firmware to be able to fly higher on calm days. Wanted to get distant mountain shots or something.

He's selling it as he bought a DJI phantom apparently.

Compared to buying new, I would be saving around $600 and that's just on the base unit, no case. But, it's short a battery. $600 would cover the rest of my 4x4 recovery gear, lol.

That sounds pretty good.   I do love my P4

The case isnt quite big enough anyway.  It's nice because it's small.  I'm getting by with it for now.  I have managed to fit everything except the charging hub.  I may get a pelican and only use the case for hiking.

He possibly has a buyer, we'll see how it plays out. I told him I would like to see it.

I am getting frustrated with a lot of the restrictions.  There are 121 awesome state parks in Pennsylvania and only 6 of them allow drones and only in designated areas.  Luckily one of them is withing 15 minutes but still.  It seems the only places that are really allowed are residential areas and cities providing they're not within 5 miles of an airport which I totally get and agree with.  I imagine they will just continue to crack down and make things worse.  As the technology improves giving you the capability to do more, the regulations get more strict allowing you to do less.

Also, we have this great little mountain right in town just minutes from my house.  The Appalachian Trail run right through town.  Guess where else you cant fly your drone?  Yup, over the Appalachian Trail.

I would like to see some kind of paid permit system in place. Go to a park office with a registered drone and purchase a permit to fly in the parks.  This way they can keep track and if someone is harassing wild life or other visitors it would be easier to enforce penalties.

It really doesn’t seem as restrictive around here. You have to stay away from the boarder and airports. I’m trying to find out what there is for restrictions in the parks.  The guy was a complete moron and the gimbal had obvious damage, so I passed on that drone. All well, I’ll keep saving and maybe best to buy new if our dollar recovers a bit.

Bummer.  Maybe it's for the best.

I can't locate mine by eye in the sky for the life of me.  So I bought a skin for it.

Nice, I can see mine just fine....

So I talked to a buddy of mine....he said his key is that he launches from remote locations outside of NFZ's.    Case in point.  Check out this video....(it is long)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRzkDzC641Q (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRzkDzC641Q)

He told me he was over a mile away from filmed locations and that all locations were "Yellow"  NFZ's.     He did manage to fly into Aspen Airport's air space bc again, his take off area.

I'm mostly worried about getting in trouble.  I was in Smoky mountain national park a few days ago and left the drone home because I knew I'd be tempted.  Not sure I'd even be able to take off anyway.

Nice days have been few and far between here but yesterday evening was pretty nice so I had mine out to around a mile from the driveway.

Quit being a chickens***!  Haha.  Kidding of course.  It's nerve racking flying it that far away.  Everytime it comes back though it builds my confidence. Im working on getting to the mountain and from there a bit down range to the ski resort.

I use whatever the default is.  I haven't changed it.

I had it out 7000 feet.  Had high wind warnings the whole way.  They eventually got the better of me and I decided to bring it in.

No.  I had an ND16 on but I was trying to get in the air as soon as possible and was worried that one was too dark so rather than run back in the house and get a lighter one, I just removed it and took off.

My preference would be not to use my videos.   I am not sure I understand what you are trying to do with them.
