Title: New to me Truck
Post by: GreyMichFX4 on February 11, 2017, 12:27:33 PM
After three years of looking at truck I bought one to replace my crusty rusty 11 year old truck. Now I have to wait patiently (yeah right :redneck:) for the plow to come in and get built before I pick it up.

To appease Tom's curiosity and needs for pics here is the dealer link.

P.S.

Tom, it's getting a 9'-2" BOSS V.

Sweet! And acres of black paint to share the detailing of here!  :funny:

Looks like it already has plow mounts on it (Boss maybe?) though. Just mounts and no plow included or did you want a different plow?

BTW, you're a better man than I to plow with a dually!

Now you see why I said I've lost my mind buying a Black truck!

As far as plowing with a dually is concerned I'm not to terribly worried after plowing with our loader with the pusher on it. You are correct it has a BOSS mount and harness already on it the only thing I needed was the plow with the hand held control.

Since it's a 2008, I'm assuming it's a 6.0 liter. Planning on doing anything to the motor?

Luckily it's got the 6.4 that's been deleted and studded already with an H&S Mini Max. :hp:

Sweet! I took an F-350 with the same tuner kit & mods to Florida and back to pick up a trailer a few years ago. It went like stink!

Your right! For a truck that's over 9000 pounds it scoots.

Well I'm officially jealous.  I love the look of those years and I want a dually so bad.

As a little side story.  A local guy was at the plow shop the other day.  He was out plowing in his 2016 F350 with a very expensive plow when he caught a curb and bent the frame of the truck.

I've seen our guys run into some pretty big stuff and never bend a frame. He must have "caught" the curb at a pretty good clip - head on.

That's what I said.  I said he should get a cheaper plow so the plow frame bends before the trucks.

Very nice rig! That is a lot of paint!!!

Nice that it's been deleted and set up already.

You will be able to push a ton of snow with that beast.

Congrats Nice purchase.

It seems to be the year for vehicle replacements for everyone here.

I got a '14 Nav in Tux Black in the end of NOV; I have not had much time to work on it due to my day job.
- I did the roof rack delete on it so it would fit in some parking garages and 'clay pad' the whole thing with banana ice and replaced the puddle lamps with the LEDs ones.

The Mrs' '17 MKZ in Black Velvet finally came in. We ordered it in OCT.
That thing is a beast with the 3.0TT. At 350HP & 400 ft/lbs it $h!ts and gets.
I am waiting out the new paint for warmer weather to OptiGloss it

More black vehicles? I must be missing something here. On the other hand, none of you will have any excuses for not sharing full details come spring. (Of course for Dave, spring does not commence until mid-July.)

It desperately needs a bath already here are the pictures as promised. I will get some of the interior when the weather cooperates a little better and I have some reading to do to learn how to take care of the King Ranch leather.

The reason I asked is that there's a lot more going on (and hanging off the front end) there, but most folks would never go back to a straight blade after using one. And the Boss V's seem to be pretty nice. Have fun!

Looking good.

That blade looks a lot wider than 9-2 in that picture with both sides pulled back.

That is definitely going to deliver the mail without question.

I took an evenlyn read over the thread but did not see it.  How bad is the paint ?

The dealer pictures are overcast, so it could be good from far - far from good.

I noticed, is that the reflection of the same plow in the dealer picture ?
- click it for full size.

Thanks Steve! The paint needs some TLC but isn't too bad when I looked at it in the sun in Tuesday when I picked it up. I thought my 6.0 was quick but this truck is even quicker and it does outweigh my last truck by about a thousand pounds without the plow. It's a really big plow with the wings pulled back in the V position it measures 99 inches wide.

Sounds like you made a great purchase.

Engine mods already done, it had the plow frame on it and the paint is not bad.
- by normal non-OCD standard it might be considered great..we have a bad sickness.

Is anything hooked up to the upfitter switches ?
- I forget which ones are just switches and which ones have replays on them...

The seats look pretty good condition, hard to tell if that is dirt on the console lid, or jsut worn smooth.

Either way should be easy to clean, and with it being the lid you can remove it and clean it on the bench as not to make a mess out of the dash with fling off.

Dang, that plow is impressive! You'll be prepared for what's coming next winter for sure!

What an awesome truck, I'm sure you'll be hanging onto that one for a while!

Do you have to keep any log books or anything for DOT?

I was actually looking a little the other night.  I'd really like something more than a half ton.  I want a bigger bed.  Half ton, crew cabs only half the 5'8" bed or whatever.  Everything seems to be outrageously priced.  There are 2008s from the big 3 all going for low to mid $40k.

If you go back to Ford, you can get the F150 in a crew cab and 6.5ft box. They aren't very common though. My buddy just got a great deal on a new 2016 Platinum. It's a full load crew with the long box and max tow. a little better than $20k off MSRP.

He now hooked on the ecoboost too, lol.

I would have no problem going back to a Ford.  I'm not brand loyal.  They all get the job done and are comparable.  I am actual quite fond of the new F150s.

Tom, I refuse to accept that reality.  The guy who's house we stay at in Tennessee has a 2012 Ram 3500.  Bought it new for around $42k if I remember right.  I can't find a truck even 8 years old for that price.

The guy I work for in the winter - who has 10 Super Duty trucks - has a theory. He says the price of used 3/4 and 1 ton trucks is stupid high because the price of new ones in beyond stupid high. Oh, and if it's a diesel, add double stupid. The days of having a heavy duty pickup as a daily driver are long gone for most folks.

Maybe you need to look in the U.P.

The Start of this thread was a 9 year old f-350 King Ranch dually Crew Cab; modded with plow frame for $26K.

In Chicago you can get a 2010 5.4 F250 in XL or XLT,  Super Cab or Crew cab all day long for < $ 20K.
- Any color you want, as long as it is white.

Even with the 6.2, the gassers are gutless. Dodge HD's have the best Power IMO with the 6.4 Hemi.

Prices are stupid everywhere, but if you want to save 30%, buy one from Canada and import it. It's a pretty easy process in all honesty. You can even pay firms to do it for you. Just don't buy one from Montreal.
Title: Re: New to me Truck
Post by: Kitzy on March 04, 2017, 04:41:04 PM
My little 6.2 in my Chevy is a champ.  I have to imagine it would hold up well in a 2500 seeing as Chevy's gas option in their HDs is a 6.0 which delivers less power.

The GM 6.0 gas motor isn't all that bad. We've got two (in 3/4 ton 4x4's) at the marina. It won't pull like a diesel, but it does all right. I should know since I put most of the towing miles on them.
Title: Re: New to me Truck
Post by: Blown F-150 on March 04, 2017, 11:20:53 PM
Should clarify. The ford 6.2 feels completely different in the SD than the 1/2 ton. I think it felt neutered and under powered in the HD. I've driven the 6.0 Chevy a while back (04-06) in both the Silverado SS and the 2500 HD. It was a rocket in the SS, I still miss that truck. It seemed pretty gutless in the HD, but I was pretty much always pulling a sweeper with it, so not exactly a fair comparison.

My old boss had a 2012 (may have been a 2013) 1500 like Kitzy's with the 6.2 and it went very well. I thought it had great power. I have never experienced the Chevy 6.2 in a HD. I would assume it would do well, but the power curve still isn't really as good for an HD as the big Hemi.

They all seem like slugs compared to my Eco though... :uugly:

I have no idea how the 6.2 would fare in a 2500.  I'd like to think a little better than the 6.0 but who knows.  It's not an option so you won't find one to try anyway.  I just think the 3/4 ton and 1 ton are too much truck for those gassers.  Although, my dad just got a new company vehicle.  It's a standard cab, super duty with a 9' tool body on it with the 6.2 and he seems to really like it.  But he's coming from a 2003 GMC 6.0.

That was the example for spending less than half of the range you were in.

The 9 year old in this thread was a  6.4L F350 went for $ 26K.

If you are looking at spending low to mid 40K's that would yield a 5 year old F250 / F350 6.7L with ~ 50k miles on it in Chicago.

Going higher mileage would get a 2010 with the 6.4L and a v plow already on it.

$ 32K

2009 to 2011 F250 / F350 got 50 results this AM, most expensive being a 2011 F350 with 45K miles at $ 43K.

Spot Exchange Rate this AM CAD 55,888.00 = USD 41,323.5872.  At the moment I did it 0.7394 but it is floating around 0.738x to 0.739x this AM.

This is straight up currency market conversion, not what one of us could convert for.

They are about what Chicago is for prices.

50 miles of 18071
F250 - F350
2009 - 2012

20 this AM, most expensive was a 2012 F350 6.7L  Lariat w/ 56K miles @ 42.9K.

Going to an example to the one from CAN.

Yeah, I would agree those look like decent prices.

The 2010 is nice!

I'm half tempted to drive down and check that truck out.  KBB says I have $7-9k in equity in my truck.  However, I do not have good luck with that dealership.  I test drove a GMC when I was looking for my current truck and one of the guys came out to look at my Mustang for the trade and couldn't figure out how to get it in reverse and almost drove it through the showroom window.  Then they insulted me by offering me a few grand under what I owed yet.  The dealer I ended up going through gave me a few grand over what I owed.  The two dealers were close to $6k apart.

Ok, quick update on the truck after 4 months and going on 21,000 miles(yes you read that correctly :dope:). The truck developed an annoying coolant leak on the front of the motor but it hasn't ticked me off enough yet to warrant spending the money to fix it. This thing is a trailer towing Beast even with the Mini-Max set to no power with a trailer behind it and with it set to Hot it's a rocket when passing cars that can hit triple digits in a hurry if you're not paying attention.

Overall I'm happy with the truck.

Glad to hear you're liking it, but some of us are still waiting for pics of the first full detail. Hint, hint.

Tom, unless something changes and I can free up a weekend or two detailing the truck is going to have to wait. Business has been nuts this year and with the boys playing sports it's tough.

I ran it by the Excuse Committee and somehow they bought it. They said you can only use it once though.

Like Mike said, good problems to have!

Glad to hear it's still putting a smile on your face. Probably quite the beast all set up like that.

21K miles in 4 months  :wow:

I have been in airport since I got the Nav, I have only put ~3K miles on it since NOV-2016.

I also have the same problems, too busy to put a full detail on it and with the road construction out in front of the house running to NOV-2017 there has been no reason.
- Dirt and dust and once a rain comes all mud.

I tossed all my open pads and put the polishers in bags until construction is done.

My daily commute is 60 miles one way and with traveling to the yards every week it doesn't take long to pile on the miles.

Wow, 60 miles is the round trip to my parents house when I go there on SAT morning to see them.

I am ~ 1 mile from the SW corner of ORD as the crow flies, I am 7 miles because I have to drive around the south side to get to the terminal.
- Uber both ways is almost cheaper than 1 day of parking now making it less miles on the truck.

Sad part, my miles since I got it include a trip to DTW and 2 trips to Indy, so you can see where the builk of my miles are at.

And I thought my daily 38 mile (each way) commute was bad!

It's not really as bad as it sounds. I get to think about my to do list and what's got to happen during the work day for the hour ride into town then I get to chill and ignore the world on the way home at night. The only thing that I am really concerned about is carrying the plow that much in the winter.

Or unless I hit another skunk like I did last week.

Sorry for your loss.

Did the truck have a viking funeral or did you just leave the keys in the ign in a bad part of town ?

Too many people know not to touch my truck! :redneck:

It wasn't too bad.

They sure as hell know not to touch it when it smells like that.  :wow:

The keys in the truck in the bad part of town was the Seinfeld beyond BO reference.
