Title: 2014-2015 TDC Winter Snard Competition
Post by: Too Stroked on December 02, 2014, 07:38:19 PM
As most of us are painfully aware, the winter of 2014-2015 is almost upon us. (Of course one hour west of me in Buffalo NY where they got 7 feet last week – somebody might disagree with the “almost” part.) But with each new winter comes opportunity. That’s right sports fans, it’s time once again for the fabulous annual TDC Snard Competition - a competition so prestigious that competitors from around the globe (or at least from around New Jersey) vie for the honor of winning the fabulous Golden Snard trophy. (It’s coated in not one, not two, but several layers of Rustoleum Gold spray paint.)

As the judges (Dave and I) sat down (at the bar) to discuss this year’s competition, there was only one question on our minds - Who farted? After much deliberation – similar in fact to the deliberations we go through each year – we decided it was Mike (Kitzy).

And it was with that breakthrough that we decided that the time was right to radically change this year’s competition. That’s right folks; it is with great pride (shame?) that we announce that cheating will be legalized this year. Sure, some (um, maybe me) have been charged (but never convicted) of cheating in the past. But I ask you, have you never seen a Great Stuff snard actually attached to a vehicle in the past? (Don’t answer that.) But we felt that legalizing cheating would bring it out into the open where even the most brazen cheaters would feel challenged to “up their game” to levels heretofore seen only in International Curling. (And we know how exciting it made that sport.)

Another change that we agreed to (after the 6th or 7th shot of Jack Daniels) was to have actual pre-announced categories. (Sure, it was far easier when Dave & I could look at obvious winners and dictate that they really didn’t fit any of our categories, but what the hell.) And so we are pre-announcing the following categories for this year’s competition:

-   Best Traditional Snard
-   Best Tailgate Snard
-   Best Running board
-   Most Pathetic Snard
-   Best Snard form a state where snards don‘t normally grow
-   Grand National Snard
-   And whatever else Dave & I see fit (and can probably win ourselves)

And so, let the snards form! But remember, if you don’t submit an entry with a real picture – or at least a pathetic hand drawing – it never happened!

Greatness....

Ok, it's on.   Does a mud snard count if it is frozen?

Only if it's on a grey Super Duty or a white Tacoma.    :funny:

Yea, I suppose we could come up with a category for that.

I knew I took these for good reason!

I present my first round of entries

For Best Running Board:

For Best Snard:

You can just see how elegantly it flows with the contours of the vehicle.

And finally the Most Pathetic Snard  :dope::

Aren't those the junked wheels anyway?  I thought you never put the replacements on.

Hmm, bring on the snards!  I'm sure I can manage something this winter that can be eliminated for no good reason.

Mike I didn't have to clean any of that snow up the neighbor came over with his brand Boss 9'-2" DXT V Plow and plowed for us. Plus my loader was at my dads so I couldn't clean it up even if I wanted to.

Not to rub it in, but just a bit south of you in Chicago = Zero snow on the ground.

I think we had 1/2" of actual snow so far, the remainder has been rain.

Today is our 1st real cold day, it was 9* this AM.

Nothing but an inch or so around Calgary, I just heard the mountains got a big shot last night, it's gonna be interesting tomorrow!

I suppose if that is what we have to deal with yeah, you find ways to knock it out and live with it...for us, we have zero infrastructure for it so it is a major problem.   It looks really cool from here.... (Says the guy who is about to get a mixed bag of winter precep) this thrusday

Oh crap, I have been there for one of those.
- That is about as close to the end of days that I want to see.

Drivers either doing 5 MPH or 75 MPH on the ice bed under the snow, in all lanes ( makes for interesting 3 lane south side sweeps ) and sand speed bumps on the LBJ.

Just to rub it in, ORD is going to be 32 or 34 and sunny on THUR.   :uugly:

Post by: Too Stroked on December 31, 2014, 08:29:23 AM
Well I see our normal annual pattern of entries has changes slightly this year. We usually start out with what I'll just call "pathetic" entries and work our way (slowly) up the scale as everybody sand bags their best stuff for last. (Probably trying to beat me.) This year we start out with Hallmark Greeting Card scenes and postulate as to how nice a snard made with that stuff would be. Pardon me while I puke.  :die:

As for weather here in the road salt capital of the world, it's 23 degrees and blowing 10-15 MPH out of the west - making it a bit chilly. We got 2-4" of fluffy stuff yesterday to try our new (used) John Deere 644E loader out with. According to our operator, it's a ton better than the ancient Trojan it's supposed to replace.

And as for snards, I'm not showing my hand just yet.  :nana:

Looks like I'm in the lead  :judge:

As a matter of fact you are. In fact, you have the only entry showing an actual snard! And as much as I hate to admit it, you have a commanding lead. Rumor has it that Mike is hiding a picture of a Chevy Snard that although pathetic by past competition standards, is still bigger than yours. And since size matters ...

Dave however is way out in front in the category he devised called "Pictures of beautiful stuff that should appear in a  Hallmark Greeting Card that could possibly be used to construct a snard should one actually drive a vehicle through it." He's expecting almost no competition in this category since nobody really understands it.

I'm going to run out today and grab a picture for my new category called "Stuff that apparently used to be part of a world record snard, but fell off of the vehicle before it could be officially entered." In order to do this, I need to travel to the infamous Snard Graveyard on Empire Blvd where it crosses Irondequoit Creek and the bridge expansion joint sticks up causing monster snards to fall off. But first, I need to enlist the services of a guide who knows the area well ...

I just consulted with Dave - even though Mike will be one of the judges this year. we discovered Rule 837.631b which states that "Most Chevrolet products will not support the weight of a snard and thus should be scrutinized carefully." So that ought to rule him out.

If that doesn't work, Rule 1,063.251x clearly states "Mike can't win." I think that one's maybe a little clearer.

Well, it's been cold as hell up here in the great white north. "Real snarding weather" as some locals would say. And so it is with great shame that I offer up my first (rather pathetic) entry for this years competition. This little beauty was found hanging from my Tacoma this morning. More astute viewers will also notice the sad remains of a fellow snard that fell off a few days prior. So sad.

I assure you, bigger and badder snards are forthcoming!

In keeping with my tradition of not showing my best stuff too early in the competition, I humbly offer up the flowing snard from my 2006 Scion xB. (The Toaster) Although it's some what small in stature, you will note that due to the very low ground clearance offered by the lowered (by 1.5") suspension system, this snard does indeed fill up almost the whole space allotted. That's gotta be worth something.

Don't make me run out and grow another snard! To say that the conditions up here are near perfect for snarding would be an understatement.

And your entry is where?  :redneck:

BTW, I've discovered that my Tacoma has a complete set of Snard Prevention Devices installed from the factory. The extra long mud flap / splash guards that come on these trucks effectively prevent natural winning / world record snard formation. Of course that means "naturally occurring" snards are prevented. As many of you know, that's never stopped me in the past. Maybe I can see if I can grow something bigger on the Toaster during a trip to Home Depot where they sell Great Stuff Foam. Hmmm.

Where is my entry you ask?  Well times are kind of hard here.  I happened to get a 6 year old shameless snard. ..and let me tell you....he is all snard.

I may have to take this to our esteemed panel of judges to see if its actually fair. (Not that it's actually important in this competition.)

OK, never mind. Dave was doing something with a moose and Mike was demonstrating how to use a snorkel whilst four wheeling. They were a lot of help.

I almost hate to do this, but here's two more entries from little old me. First, I bring you a wonderfully bold "ripple snard." These are fairly common up here, but since they're predominately made up of road salt, partially melted snow and parts of other snards that have fallen off previous vehicles, they can take many, many forms. Although not truly massive, this one has a certain bold beauty to it. And note how effective the Tacoma "Snard Prevention Device" worked here. Had it not been there, lord knows what I'd be entering!

Next - and I almost hate to do this - I bring you a truly rare and delicate "fluffy snard." These extremely rare snards are only formed when its extremely cold - too cold for road salt to be used in fact. Then, one must run for long distances (8,197 miles in my case) at just the right speed (you think I'm going to share my secret?) to form one of these bad boys. And since they're so delicate, they usually fracture and fall off before anybody gets a picture of them. I in fact had to stop in the middle of Interstate 490 West here in Rochester - at rush hour - to get this picture. As you can see, I left my flash on by mistake too. The sudden exposure to light caused the snard to fall off right there and then. This made explaining what I was doing to the NYS Trooper somewhat problematic. Oh, the things I go through for a winning entry!

Yes, a reference to the past is all I can offer so far this year, it's 54F and sunny here today  :uugly:

I don't even have a cardboard snard to enter this year.

The roads got good and cleared after the 19" of snow ( got into the high 30s / low 40s ) and now no snow, just cold
- Thur daytime high is going to be 1*.

This is about as close as I can get to a snard.  My truck appears to be mutating in to one.

Its weird.  The roads overall weren't really bad at all.  They cancelled school for Thursday and Friday on Wednesday already.  The main roads weren't bad anyway.  Some back roads aren't even touched by plows or salt.  We took the quads out on the roads.

Here is a shot of us running on the roads.  This was Wednesday after they had already cancelled school for both Thursday and Friday (girlfriends cousin is 15 so we were always kept up to date).  So when they cancelled school, the roads weren't even this bad.  This had just fallen about 45 minutes prior.  You can see in front of my girlfriends quad the road isn't driven on yet and you can see it's just a really light snow.  The tracks you see already are her cousins.  He's up over the hill already.

It was pretty funny, he couldn't even believe the reaction to it. Seems like they just aren't used to that sort of thing around there. The whole state probably only has one plow...and it's on the front of a quad! :funny:

We went out to Bass Pro in the middle of the ice storm.  It's about 20 miles away.  They were trying to plow ice in some spots.  We made it just in time because they were closing early and were the only place still open.  We we're asked where we were from.  We said PA and they just said "ahhh ok, that explains it, all the locals stay home".

And watching them plow the interstate is hilarious.  They do a stand up job but they're so slow.  They're just crawling down the road at a snails pace.  I'm used to seeing the trucks really moving.

One of the biggest problems up here right now are what I'll call "snard graveyards." That's the stretch of road right after a big bump where snards get knocked off, slide for a hundred feet, then sit in piles in the middle of the road. On the way to the shop this morning, a lady (and her dog) in a Honda CR-V hit a big bump, swerved, caught the slippery pile of snards and spun up and over the bank. She and the dog were OK, but the Honda was stranded at least 20 feet from the road and 3 feet up in the air.

And to think of all of those championship winning snards that went to waste ...

OK, I hate to Bogart this fine competition, but nobody else seems to want to enter. And so today I offer up two beautiful snards from two beautiful vehicles.

First, I offer up this little beauty from my personal 2006 Scion xB. This beauty grew over the last two days and I must say, I'm pretty proud of it. Even though I lost a little bit hitting a pothole coming down my street, just look at how much is left:

And for my next trick, check out this bad boy from the boss's brand new 2015 F-350. This awesome snard formed up over the last week of fairly heavy duty plowing. Please note that I had to blot out the name of the company at the request of the big guy.

True. The fact that we've added a third judge (Mike) automatically meant I needed to up the alcohol order. Then, with all of the crummy entries we've had, selecting the "least worst" is going to be very difficult. (Translation: Even more beer.) Yup, it's gonna be a tough contest to judge!

Even though Dave seems to be trying to prolong the winter season - probably so he can win - it's time to draw this season's fine competition to a close. The official entry deadline will be this weekend. That should give Dave time to grow some real ones, me time to create something with spray foam and Mike time to, well, do something. Good luck!
