Title: Travel trailer question
Post by: hwm3 on September 12, 2014, 10:45:38 PM
Alright guys, I know a few of you have travel trailers. We're just starting to look and without a little guidance on which ones to steer clear of it's hard to make a decision. Too many options.

So, any brands to definitely stay away from?

I'll be pulling it with my F150 for the next year or so. Probably getting back into a Super Duty, so I don't mind being at the heavier side of the ratings for a 1/2 ton.

No bunks. Only going to be my wife and I.

Thoughts?

Best advice, go look at them....you will quickly see what brands you don't want and want.  Just you and momma, lots of options and you don't need anything big.   26ft is all you need at MAX.   Talk a look at Cruiser and Jayco.

Get something with a super slide in it and you will be set.  For your F150, try to stay around 6-7K #'s.   or less.

We spent a few hours at different dealers looking today. What do you think about Keystone? We really liked the Bullet and Passport rear living room models.

Keystone is many brands...my thoughts...avoid aluminum sides...other than that should be ok.   Not familiar with those lines under Keystone.   They make low end through high end.   When you walk in the trailer that you like (just like a house) will will know it.

Rear living is super popular for empty nesters and full timers.

We have a Cruiser 5er...it has Polar Walls, Aluminum frame (not balsa wood)  It's mid range but considered a 4 season camper.   This may sound so stupid but DO NOT BUY A CAMPER IF IT HAS A DOMETIC FRIDGE WITH THE SLIDE ON THE FINS.   Buy a camper with a Norcold fridge.   Dometic fridges suck...they are terrible and do not cool.

I cannot stress this enough Harold, you live in Texas now....do not buy a camper without a Norcold Fridge.  Dometic makes great stuff but their fridges do not work in our heat.   Dometic fridges are good if you live north but not South...only Norcold works in our climate.

Was told by a friend to check out PPL motor homes sales in Houston...they are one of the biggest.  New and Used.

Harold that is a good looking rig.

We are camping at North Texas Jellystone (Nov 13th-16th) if you wanted to venture north and come camp.

Thanks for the invite. We are going to be camping that weekend, but I think we're staying closer to home. Wife only has Saturday and Sunday off. She's taking a week at Thanksgiving and 2 weeks at Christmas.

New years we'll be in Arkansas. We'll hook up at some point.

Question though. How is your LED strip under the awning holding up?

Great.   If you add one do it now, clean the area and the 3m backed versions hold very well.   Better to use 2 people...one to hold light as you take backing off and adhere to camper.   3 years and this one is still one.   When you oder them from Amazon...pay special attention to the color temp.   Ours is 6k...on the blue side.   I would prefer the whiter ones...our friends is 4000K it is much whiter but feels brighter...our is more pleasing to the eye though.   Tough call.

4300k is pretty much the most useful light output.  It is physically brighter than higher temps.  4-5k is a good range for useful light output though it all comes down to personal preference.

About the lights - In the printing business all proofs and production material is look at under 5000k light. It is considered day-light. The higher the number the bluer it gets, the lower the number the yellower it gets. :Me:

Another question RR. Good Sam. Worth it or not?

Mom & Dad still have theirs after 13 years and dad is pretty cheap.

Aside from the discounts I think there are some other items it gets them.
- I don't know if "Camp Wally world" is open to everyone or just GS members.

We don't do good sam, not worth it to me.  If we did extended stays then yes 20 % off would come in handy.   But not so much for our trips.    but we do get the good sam towing b/c it covers all your cars and towing your rig if you break down.
