Title: Houston! I have a problem.
Post by: GreyMichFX4 on April 13, 2014, 05:33:54 PM
I finally figured out why the truck didn't feel like it was handling right after I hit that pothole and took out the right rear tire  a couple weeks ago.

I heard a loud pop today and when I looked this is what I found.

Holy busted main leaf Batman! Yea, that would do it. I'd still check the alignment though. If it was a hard enough hit to brake the main leaf, it may have done some other harm too.

BTW, make sure you replace the U-Bolts. I popped one on the F-550 on the last plow run. It had rusted right through. I talked the boss into replacing all four while we were under it. One can only imagine whet would happen if I didn't hear it go and kept plowing until the other one let go. That would have been a sure roll over.

It's going to a friends shop tomorrow and he's going to make sure nothing else is wrong with the truck.

Glad you found it before pulling any kind of load!

Mine was the exact same thing, the main was busted, but the centering pins on both sides were still fine....

Mine wasn't too much coin to get it all fixed an re-aligned.

Spring packs cannot be too expensive right?

Wow, that had to have been one heck of a pot hole, unless they were already close to popping. I pinged a few buddies back home with PSD's after I found out about mine and it seems to be a fairly common thing :dunno:

Most of its labor I'm only relplacing the main springs and it's going to cost around $700. The truck has 212,000 on it and has had a trailer behind it since day one so I'm fairly impressed how this truck has held up.

$700 doesn't sound too bad, mine was $450 for the one side and alignment. Labor is a bugger.

Got the truck back today and the springs must have been broken for some time before I hit the pothole. The ride quality is night and day.
